Gwendolyn Brooks 3 Man Has Power I shall not release you from the rope of words Binding you to the projection of stones Swinging you with all winds. I’ll wait until you dream a great dream. And stretch your hand to break its lions making them subordinate to your will. Then slowly snap their backs, as I watch when you have drawn their last breath I shall pull my sword and split the marrow of their bones. Making you see their emptiness. No more will you hold your faith in things. But sing the greatness of your blood. - Mazis i Kunene 5 6 Power Power 7 Like the winds of the sea are the ways of fate; As we courage along through life ’Tis these of a soul, that decides its goal; And not the calm or the strife. -Ella Wheeler Wilcox Powerful People Beautiful People I will hold beauty as a shield against despair. When my heart faints I will remember sights like these. -Elsie Robinson 13 All From an Inner Force The energy chest One keeps dipping in With the hand of one head And one’s chest is seldom empty. -Michael Benedikt Beauty Beautiful Faces are those that wear It matters little if dark or fair World-souled honesty printed there. -Ellen P. For wisdom has traced what they tell. And truth may be drawn up as surely From them, as it may from a well. Let us question the honest and doers. Academic ar- eas that participate are: Typing, Stenog- raphy, Journalism, Drafting, Speech, Drama, English (Spelling and Ready Writing), Math (Slide Rule and Number Sense), and Science. These depart - ments prepare stu - dents for competition in the annual district and state meets held in March and April. The E stacado Commercial depart- ment directed by Mrs. Barbara Clark- son, provides funda- mental training in typing, bookkeeping, shorthand, and ste- nography. Students gain experience by working for the de- partment's mock company, the Spen- cer Athletic Compa- ny, for about four weeks in simulated job situations. Other training is given through working practice sets which exercises the stu- dents' ability to com- plete office tasks. 117 A good back- ground in typing, bookkeeping, photog- raphy, art, writing, or salesmanship can be very helpful to a student of Journalism because all of these skills are put to use. Copy must be typed, ads must be sold, billed and en- tered in accounting books, pictures must be taken, processed, and printed, layouts must be drawn in a manner that is pleas - ing to the eye, and editors must work overtime to see that deadlines are met. In o r d e r to add more pleasing ef- fects to the school yearbook, MATA- DOR, and newspa- per, ECHO, Mr. Terry McClain, ad- visor, has called up- on student staff mem- bers to take on a heavier work load in order to keep ex- penses as low as pos - sible. This year's ECHO staff, for example, continued doing paste - up of the newsmagazine, a job which cuts about 40 percent off the print- ing cost. Another task which began just this year was that of setting type and fold- ing and s t a p 1 i ng of the magazine for an additional 20 percent savings. Luckily her boyfriend, with the help of their friends the beetles, grasshop- pers and ants, were able to save her by breaking the magic spell that the spider had cast. The play was pre- sented early in the school year to area elementary schools and to first period English classes. Just before Christ- mas the major produc- tion A Raisin In The Sun was performed. The play delt with the struggle of a black ghetto family to break the cycle that limited their existence. The movie of this produc- tion started Sidney Portier as Walter Lee whose father had just died and left his widow ten thousand dollars in insurance money.
