A great year with D. W. Holmes as Drum Major began in Lowry Field when the Matadors hosted the Plainview Bulldogs. On September 25 the band participated in the South Plains Fair Parade and received a trophy for their performance. Later on October 6 a brilliant blue light show was presented on Homecoming. The Matador Band upheld the loyal tradition by organizing and presenting a superb Talent Show on March 1-2. This year saw the organizing of Estacado's first stage band, also directed by Mr. Barbee. To end a great year the Matador Band held a banquet at Vann's Catering on April 16. 27 Estacado Marching Band Clarinets VANESSA COOK BRENDA GANT BLANCA GARIBAY GERTHA GRANT ROSE HALLUM LOIS HARRIS ESTELLA IBARRA MAXINE JACKSON LUKE JOINER MYRA JONES joann mcdaniel GLENDA MOORE DIANNE QUIGLEY ROSE ROBLES DEBRA ROLFE RACHEL SALAZAR CAROLYN SIMMONS SAGRA RIO SURITA BEVERLY TAYLOR LETHA TIPTON DIANE WILLIAMS ANNIE WILSON SHARON WILSON Alto Clarinets MARSHA CLEAVER ANNIE CONTEE Flutes DEBBIE ANDERSON JOYCE BLAYLOCK MARGARET BOYD JANIE GUZMAN BONNIE PHILLIPS LAURA QUIGLEY MARGIE RAVEN Oboe BECKY HILL jane mcdaniel Cornets NOE ALTAMIRANO LUPE CAPETILLO TOMMY CARRIZALES FREDDY CHAVEZ TONY ESCAMILLA GUSTAVO GARZA JOHN GAYTON HENRY GOMEZ MIKE GUTIERREZ HAROLD HALL FRANK HERNANDEZ LEE HERNANDEZ FREDDY JUAREZ JOSEPH LEE MARK MONTEMAYOR HERMAN NICHOLS MANUEL PRIETO CONNIE TURNER HAROLD WALLACE Bass Clarinets EVELYN BAUCHAM ARTHUR BLACK GAIL HALL LUKE JOINER CAROL LEE VELMA SMITH ANNIE WILSON Trombone HENRY GOMEZ CURTIS WILLIAMS F-Horn FREDDY CHAVEZ VICKI ROLLER Bass JOHN HARVEY STEVE MANAHAN LARRY RAVEN GARY WILLAMS SAMMIE WISON Baritones BILL CONNOR ADELINA DELEON FRANK GARCIA JOHN GAYTON JED KNIGHTEN MANUEL PRIETO Tenor Sax jane mcdaniel diane McDonald JOHN RENTERIA Baritone Sax JANICE HOLLOWAY LEWIS ZAVALA Alto Sax DOTTIE ALTAMIRANO DELORES ARREDONDO PAM FLEWELLEN BECKY HILL DEMETRA MILLER JOE PRIETO ERNESTO TIJERINA Drums RICKY BUSTILLOS MICHAEL DUNLAP D. Whether it is a poster for a football game or a sculpture of a Matador, a piece of artwork has great meaning for the artist. Estacado offers many opportunities for a student to advance in any art field he chooses. Art 11-12 includes a variety of projects. It provides an excellent background for future courses. The advanced art courses offered are Applied Design 31-32, Pottery 31-32, Graphic Arts 31-32, and Painting 41-42. Mrs. Maronee Janes heads the department. 43 Students Study Business The Business Department has been very busy this year. Other than learning to type, keep-books, etc., students have done several interesting projects. In typing they did practice sets. Among these practice sets were the regular office sets and something new - the air force practice sets. In shorthand, aside from learning the basics, students took a couple of field trips. They went to Draughan’s Business College and to the Post Office. In UIL competition, Mrs. Barbara Clarkson had seven students entered. Lillian Adams placed 5th in typing at regional, and Johnny Torrez placed 4th. This year EHS had a new addition to the department. All the manual typewriters were replaced by new electric typewriters. Overall Estacado has had a very busy, but very good year in the Business Department. 44 45 46 Social Studies Focus On People Learning to appreciate our country and people of other countries was emphasized in all social studies classes. Government students learn their rights in the modern world according to the constitution. World History classes learned how to apply the happenings of yesterday. World Geography and World Affairs studied people and cultures of other countries while Hebrew history was the study of Bible students. Mrs. Lena Sheffield heads the Social Studies Department. 47 48 Homemaking Teaches Understanding Food nutrition, clothing, human development, and home management were spotlighted in homemaking classes this year. Mrs. Katie Pettyjohn directed the department's activities. Future Homemakers of America were given a boost when Mary Harris was elected FHA area second vice-president. HERO (Home Economics Related Occupations), a new organization, gave students the chance to work a half day in such places as nursing homes and cafeterias. The prime basics were shared in Home and Family Living where students were taught to better understand themselves and their home lives. They also discussed preparation for marriage and children. 49 Librarians Push Projects, Win Prize Mrs. Catherine Pendleton directed student librarians in several projects this year. These projects included selling paperback books, making book markers, and winning first prize in the Christmas door decoration contest. Not all activities occurred during school hours. Students from the Estacado Library attended a regional convention in Levelland and were represented this year at the state convention in El Paso. Leaders for Estacado's library club were: Dejuana Wilson, president: Tara Price, vice-president; Sherry Paul, secretary-treasurer; Bennie Gaither, historian; and Sandra Walker, reporter. The goal for the yearbook was to have more color pictures and more student involvement. The Estacado Echo. which started out as a newspaper, was changed to a news magazine for the last issue of the year. Mr. Terry McClain, Publications Advisor, stated that the magazine format will be continued next year. Goals for the coming year will be to finance a bigger yearbook and strive for professional quality • in student publications. Sandra Garrett, Omeria Deatherage, and Louis Zavalo were co-editors of the Echo, while Valerie Waden, Brenda Rhone, Elaine Lambert, Perry Jackson, and Pat Gordon made up the editorial board of the Matador yearbook. 53 Science Labs Work Toward Discovery Classes proved to be enjoyable and interesting during lab periods in physics, chemistry, and biology. Each experiment was ended with discovery. Lab work provided students with ways of proving or contradicting theories. Such courses provide an open minded situation to anyone who wishes to explore the deeper and more exciting core of nature and it’s elements. Mrs. Susan Dahlin heads the Science Department. 54 56 Best Year Ever For EHS Speech- Drama This school year has been a very productive year for the Estacado Speech and Drama Department. Then with 3:38 remaining to play, some beautiful steals by Ray Martin and Clark Davis led to precious layups as they stretched their lead to win by 11 points. 107 Matador Track Team FIRST ROW: John Joiner Garye Price Greg West Kenneth Yates William Barree Julious Connors Coach James Miller SECOND ROW: Robert Gonzales Larry Harris Arnett Bracy Robert Moore Joe Ross Larry Moore Larry Jackson THIRD ROW: Rodney Moore Brad Copeland Pete Trevino Samuel Hunter Tommy Williams Charles Moore Ronald Tatum Lemuel Judie 108 Track Team Competes At State Coach James Miller and 5 of his Estacado Matadors traveled to Austin for the state track meet on May 2.
