The E.J.H.S. Hornet In today's society, a high school education is as essential as was a grammar school education twenty years ago. By the same token, today's high school students study much of what yesterday's college students learned. The modern high school teacher must deal with changing times and the explosion of knowledge. Our outstanding teachers at Essex Junction High School face this task with remarkable courage and devotion. Mrs. Rich, throughout your teaching career you have brought both the rudiments and the fine insights of mathematics to numerous students. Your clarity in presenting concepts intuitively as well as your conciseness in demonstrating rigorous definitions has made our mathematics department one of the finest in the nation. Your devotion to the math league team has made our school number one in mathematics. Mr. Hamel, we will always remember your warm smile and enthusiasm for social studies. You pos-sesss those special teaching qualities which make students eager to learn and participate in class discussion. Your devotion to students both in and outside the classroom has made an outstanding contribution to our school. Congratulations to Mrs. Rich and Mr. Hamel on a dedication well deserved! From the knarled knotty roots up to the thick, sfurdy, trunk and through the long, swaying hows to the whispy tree tops,' we follow the barky pain of education. Hiawatha and Summit Street Schools, the grounds of our learning, gave us the roots of our knowledge—reading, Siting, and 'rithmetic taught to the tune of the Hickory Stick . . . On to Fleming and then Albert I). Lawton and Essex Middle School where we gained our educational foundation that sturdy trunk of knowledge. And now, after these four years at Fssex Junction High School, we have chosen our separate paths, and our knowledge has branched out into limbs and twigs. Some are experts in Mathematics and Science, taking derivative and finding integrals with ease, others have become authorities on Shakespeare, Milton, and Frost, but what next? Off to the University and tire-good ol' college tree! Off to those wispy tree tops, swaying in the brisk autumn breeze. The world is ours to conquer, and the sky is the only limit! College? Military? Work? Essex Jet. High Scho’ah. 'r m Albert D. Freshmen Fever This year's freshmen class is by far the largest in EJHS history. As with all freshmen, we were at first scared and felt that we did not belong in this strange new world. But after a week or so, these beliefs were changed. Now we are in all sorts of programs and courses. For the first time we have a freshmen soccer squad, (Not winning but good experience) and of course all kinds of other teams and clubs just waiting for the new crop of bright-eyed bushy tailed freshmen. All in all we have gotten off to a good start for the class of '88 Phys, Ed. Introduction to physical education is a one semester course required for all freshmen. The course consists of four days a week of running and aerobic exercise plus one day a week of lecture on the body systems and functions. Intro, is designed to get students into better physical fitness. Freshmen Float The freshmen float was a great success. There was much controversy about the theme at first, but we think our final decision was the best. The theme of the 1984 freshmen float was, We burnt you Spaulding. We have illustrated this by constructing a gigantic toaster. The inside, a piece of toast (Eric Kovel) will pop up, while the hornet (Janie Overfield) pushes him back down. Due to the freshmen class (including parents), we produced a great float. The third tie was the overtime, quadruple sudden death contest with CVU which gained this team the title of Co-State Champions. This title was the reward for a season of hard work and dedication to a cause. The team developed unity and precision as the season went on. Twenty-two individuals became a unit which sought and gained success. With the exception of two regular season losses to CVU and tie games with Mount Mansfield and South Burlington, the Hornets defeated North Country twice, St. Albans twice, Colchester three times. Missisquoi twice. Mount Mansfield, South Burlington and Burlington once. The departing seniors will be missed. However Chubby and Curly will be back. Lead by captains Bart Couture and Peter Putre, the Hornets went head to head with rival South Burlington in the State Championship game. Although losing that game, Essex rolled through a successful regular season winning 9 games, tying 4, and losing 4. In addition to the senior captains, the class of '85 featured solid performances offensively from Jim Bonnette, Phil Landler, and Craig Wilcox. Defensively, Essex was lead by Rick Yates, Tom Cavallari, Dave Pennycook, Chris Roy, and Greg Lyon. Senior exchange students, Ricardo De Bescoa and Martin Cravener provided an international flavor to the squad. Senior assistant coach Jim Wadleigh, whose insight and organization were critical to the team's success, will not be able to be replaced for the '85 season. Jay Brady L-R: J. The Essex JV and Varsity Boys' Cross Country teams blend a wealth of youthful talent with an experienced group of quality leaders and runners. The team has trained with pride and determination. This effort has established our team as a top contender in Vermont. The JV boys' 17-1 record and the Varsity boy's 15-3 record attest this success. Most importantly, the team has learned to view team achievement as a greater goal than individual achievement. Positive attitude and hard work have insured success. 1984 State Champs! J.V. enthusiasm The 1984 Varsity Field Hockey Team had a very successful season. They ended their season 12-3-2, losing the final game to South Burlington. Being runners-up in the state finals was no surprise to Coach Woodley as it was her best team ever. Captained by high scoring Sandy Lowther, speedy Julie Kane, and aggressive Koukla Kourebanas, the team played to their best season. The captains had much help with defensive standouts Jill Lanpher, Tina Truax, Jennifer Couture, Brooke Taft, Donna Kaelin, and Julie Warren. The offense was led by team high scorer, sophomore Belinda Hathaway, Francese Henry, Sue Willey, and Jeannine Cardinal. The team will miss the seniors but the holes will be filled with promising underclassmen. Top left: Senior Co-Capt. Sandy Lowther Top right: Essex gets agressive. Left: J.V. warms up. The senior-ladened team has played will over the past season and had one of the toughest schedules in the state. Their biggest win was over Rutland who came into Hornetville undefeated at the time. This high point was followed by a low in the loss of M.S.J. the next week. There was a remote chance of winning the NVAC Division I North, because the team had to win both of its remaining games to appear in the state championship for the fourth time in the past five years. This years' seniors have done an excellent job in continuing the tradition of football excellence at EJHS. Congratulations for a job well done! Most people may not recognise it, but there is more to this school than just math, English and science. We have under our roof an area where they teach house building, printing, office machines, auto mechanics, and cooking as a profession. Yes, you guessed it, it is the vocational area. Some of you may be wondering what a vocation is, well the dictionary defines it as a person's profession. Other definitions include it as being a learned and practiced group of specific skills done in a professional manner, the way one earns a living, or preparing for a career. About those students who are enrolled in the vocational program, some of their teachers were questioned. They said that these students are very special, mature, and very serious about what they are doing. These students have to develop the ability to work well under pressure and accept responsibility for their performance. One teacher explained that the misconception about vocational classes being for misfits who fail in traditional academic classes is disproven. The students and teachers are working and learning together to show the changes that have occurred over the years. ■drawing is a tedious er concentrates hard on ing says Steve Barret. mp makes sure to put flier right. wrme should enjoy a ca-d processing. .k is Chris Bunker, along rest of his drafting class. Sophomore Sophistication This year's sophomores have elected Mai-trayee Bhattacharyya as their class president, Julianne Judge serves as secretary, and Kristin Halpin is the sophomore class treasurer. Our student council representatives had many plans for the class of 87. We have conducted the Homecoming Dance which featured the Boyz. The usual moneymakers such as bake sales, car washes, and carnation sales were planned; along with a unique fund raising ideas for Valentine's Day. The student council's picture is featured in the front of this section. Honors English The newest addition to the English department is an Honors English class taught by Hasse Halley. One must want to emerge oneself in literature as Mrs. Halley says. There is an average of one to two hours of homework a night. The class has illustrated one chapter of a book by S. I. Hayakawa a week and is currently working on a poetry section. Mrs. Halley makes the class work on the word processors many times a week. Although hard and challenging, the class is interesting and it helps a student to learn all about literature. English 201 English 201 is a newly formed class that the class of '87 will be the first to complete. This class is different in that it is a full year course instead of a two semester courses in the past. Many of my classmates disagreed with the administration's choice to change the sophmore English program. I was one of those students, but after a quarter of this class I realize I was wrong. This course is basically American Literature and composition put together to create a well balanced English class. We have been reading plays, poems, short stories and books of American Literature, such as The Crucible, The Scarlet letter , and The Pit and The Pendulum. Historical information and grammar are stressed also. Academics The Essex Junction Math League offers more than just challenging problems for aspiring young mathematicians. It provides each member with a deeper enthusiasm for mathematics and logic as well as a deeper insight into the heart of problem solving. The team meets four times each year for competition with other Burlington area teams. Each meet consists of 5 short problems rounds of 10 minutes each -Arithmetic, Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry?Analytic Geometry. A select team then works on one paper for 12 minutes. Last year Essex Junction won all four meets and traveled to Canton, Mass, for New England competition. Out of 16 teams, we placed 5th with a perfect score on the team paper. In the Atlantic Regional Math League, we placed 6th out of 24 state teams. Exclaimed Coach Karen Rich, I know we can win again this year if we work hard! These questions come from the world famous 'Trivia Pursuit game. After many of these get-togethers at 8:15 A.M., the team is ready for competition. This year the team will travel to St. Michaels College for a live, on the air, competition. They will compete against Vergennes in this Varsity sport of the Mind on January 13, 1985. Typical questions cover a broad range from History or Mathematics to Science and Linguistics. During 30 minutes of play, the announcer reads a toss-up question. If one team answers incorrectly then the question is read again for the other team. Next a multi-part bonus question is read, and the whole team contributes toward the answer. One question is to pick the antonym of the work Parsimonious, and that was only a sample question. Panic begins to settle in. Organization of such a large group is difficult. Even with four advisors, the help of many of the older members holds the group together. President Robert Gaskins provides a base for learning because of previous experience. Robert spent the past summer in France through the American Foreign Student Exchange (AFS). Whitney Ailing, another Senior, spent the summer with a host family in Yugoslavia. With this type of experience, the International Club relies upon the Seniors. Transition from not only from Basic Education to Specialized Education, but also a transition from our private little worlds where nothing can touch us to the realization that there is a vast world around us. A world that seems very cruel and unforgiving much of the time. We start learning of other people's problems and it makes ours diminish in comparison. Our television, radio, and newspapers don't do much to brighten up our views of the world. Lets hope we can make our own happiness amidst a world which sometimes seems to be falling apart. -A.W.M. Many times artwork, pictures, writeups, and many other things needed to be found just to finish the pages in time. The staff must organize underclassmen and senior pictures, senior question-aires, club pictures, superlative voting and pictures, just to construct the book while simultaneously try- ing to make enough money to stay out of debt. This year, a color section, the vocational, and the academic section have been added to include as many of the students of the school as possible. The staff has worked very hard to make this book the best ever. I hope you, the students, teachers, and staff at EJHS cherish this yearbook of 1985. Cindy Young Co-Editor Back row from 1. to r. Eric Casler Latin Day Lives On On Thursday, March 14, 1985, the Ninth Annual Vermont Latin Day was celebrated in the Patrick Gymnasium at the University of Vermont, sponsored by the UVM Classics Department and the VCLA. More than 700 high school students and teachers from 18 Vermont schools attended the festivities. A series of three probationes for Juniors (1st 2nd year Latin) and Seniors (3rd 4th year) were conducted. Those who won blue ribbons in the first heat: Mt. Mansfield Union, South Burlington High, Essex Junction Educational Center, and Montpelier High. In the third heat, Seniors from Essex jr______________________ Junction, Burlington, and Lamoille Union were the blue ribbon winners. In the Certamen, Essex Junction and Mt. Mansfield Junior teams took first and second place respectively; in the senior group Essex Junction again took top honors. Skits based on the themes in Ovid's Metamorphoses were interspersed through these contests. There had to be a metamorphosis in two senses: from the Ovid story to the 20th century and from someone or something into someone or something else. Essex Junction won 2nd Honorable Mention. There were also exhibits from five schools, and the judges had a very difficult time deciding the winners. First prize went to Essex Junction. So long, dear friends. We shall be parted and head for different grounds. The programs will fade, the music forgotten. Yet the memories will survive. The lights will shine, the crowds will cheer, if you simply close your eyes. The show is over, rehearsals finished, and we'll eventually drift apart. I was making my way through the crowd, when I saw a familiar red jacket. Then I looked up. Colin! Man, how are you doing? I haven't seen you since you came back from Colorado. It was Colin Duval, my friend of a lifetime. We grew up doing everything together, mostly having fun. He always had that smile on his face, that smile that emitted joy and exuberance. His hair was still wet, he must have just come in from out in the snow. Snow was always a big thing with Colin. He was an ardent skier. When we were kids, we used to slide down his long driveway for hours on end. So Colin, how do you like UVM? I love it. I love it. There was that smile again. We talked, and he told me that he was going to work at the Boat Club again his summer. The Boat Club was Colin's second home during the sailing months. He sailed for pleasure, to compete, and to teach others everything he knew. I remember going to summer camp with Colin when we were about ten. We were both miserable. Peanut butter and jelly every day, baths in the lake, roll call early in the morning. We got homesick - we went to see the camp nurse. Yeah UVM's great. I've met so many people. You've got to come visit me sometime John. He gave me his room number, and I said I'd swing by after spring break. Some people came and cut our conversation short — I was sure I'd see him later. But for some reason, 1 looked back before pushing on through the crowd and caught a final glimpse of that familiar smile. by John Minadeo THE CLASS OF 1985 •Adams, Nicholas David James Aiken, Todd Robert Aikey, John David •Allaire, Laura Jean Allen, Keith Freeman Allen, Sean Lawrence •Ailing, Whitney Ann ••Ashley, Cynthia Monroe •Avolizi, Lauri Kathleen Badger, William Joseph Barewicz, David Bernard •Barewicz, Michael Albert •Barrett, Krista Kae Bartholomew, Kimberly Anne •Bassett, Melodic Ann Beauchemin, Bradley Anthony Beaulieu, Raoul Edward Belanger, Todd Alan ••Benjamin, Karen Lynn Benway, Sean Patrick •Berard, Jeffrey Maurice Bessette, Christopher Leo Bessette, Joseph Earl •Biqglestone, Donald Kent •Blanchard, Brooke Amy Blanchard, Jody Lynn Boivin, Melissa Ann Bombard, Mark Allen Bonnette, James Scott •Boucher, Kenneth Joan •Bouldin, Justino Anastasia •Bovia, Karyn Ann ••Boyd, Michael Sherman Briggs, Alan Martin Brooks, Sherry Lynne •Bukcr, Marc Alan Bundy, Ronald Watson •Bunker, Christopher David Burleson, Brett Michael •Busch, Steven Henry Callahan, Jane Elizabeth Canty, Deborah Cardinal, Jeannine Marie Ca8hman, Jeffrey Brian ••easier, Eric David Cavallari, Thomas Scott Charbonneau, Jeffrey Scott •Charland, Daniel James •Charland, Tim Francis Charland, Tom Joseph •Charron, Paul Clinton Chase, Kelley Jaye Cheney, Jason Brown Coe, Alan Bruce Cook, John Stanley III Corbo, Karen Ann •Corbo, Kim Marie •Costante, Linda Kay Cota, Archie Herbert •Couture, Bernard Arthur, Jr. •Cravener, Martin John Cronan, Judithanne •Cunningham, Laura Louise Currier, Michelle Marie •Cutler, Dianne Elizabeth •Cutler, Timothy Edward ••DeBeascoa, Ricardo Delorme, Michelle Lynn ••DesRoches, David Paul •DiCicco, Michael Daniel Dionne, Scott Allon •Dix, Jon Jeffrey •Donahue, Robert Matthew Donovan, Salli Lyn ••Duval, Colin Arthur Eddy, Paula Marie •Ellsworth, Kelley Anne Emerson, Erlon Leslie III Engelberth, Timothy Albert Ernest, Elton Kenneth ••Eschholz, William Edward Euber, Matthew David •Farr, Lisa Ann Fausel, Deborah Anne •Ficken, Heidi Anne •Findlay, Victoria Sue ••Fitzgibbons, Sharon Elizabeth •Flaker, Anne Elizabeth •Fleury, Shellio Dunham •Forsey, Michelle Lorraine •Fox, Ryan Benton •Frazier, Amy Kelly Gamma1, Michael William •Garrison, Charlene Ann •Garrison, Tammy Lee •Gaskins, Robert Steven, Jr. Gaudette, Louisa Mary •Gerardi, Richard Paul Gervais, Angela Marie Girard, Lawrence Wilfred Giroux, Patrick Paul •Goldring, Leslie Ann Gomez, Pamela Jeanne Goodrich, Byron Mathew •Gotlieb, David Alan •Graves, Lisa Jane ••Grimm, Rebecca Elizabeth Guyette, Jackie Marie Haberland, Aaron Wolfgang Hallcn, Joseph Carl •Halpin, Gina Marie •Hamby, Ian Price Hammond, Lisa Ann •Harding, Emily Beth Harper, Donald James Harper, Pamela Anne Heck, Teri Sue Henderson, Erik Michael •Henry, Francese Irene •Heron, Edward Leon •Herschede, Beth Anne •Hoehl, John Michael •Hopper, Christine Susan •Humphreys, Anne Michelle Jacobs, Mark Louis •Jacobus, Amy Elizabeth •Jarrett, Stephanie •Jennings, Robert Stephen •Jenot, Michelle Marie Jewe11, Howa rd Leroy ••Juvan, Thomas Matthew •Kane, Julie Ann Kenyon, Gary Allen, Jr. •Kim, Megan Irene •King, Joey Fred •King, Laura Helen ••Kirby, Shaun Kevin •Kissinger, Robert Jay •Korey, Mark Laurence Kourebanas, Angelica Maria Kuechler, Daniel Aron •Laberge, Carmen Marie LaBounty, Bruce David Lafountaine, Tonya Louise Lahaie, Laurie Ann Lamb, Steven Edward •Landler, Philip Adrian •Lang, Donna Marie •Lanpher, Jill Suzan •LaPine, Wendy Sue •Laramee, Kim Mane •Larrow, Bryan Christopher •Lashway, Matthew Scott •Laurent, Christine Louise •Lavallee, Jon Allen •Lavallee, Paula Jean Leavitt, Valerie Ann LeClaire, Mark •Lemire, Michelle Marie Lemnah, David Maurice Leo, John Eric Little, Jeffrey Russell Littlefield, Amy Susan Locke, Dawn Michelle •Lowther, Sandra Lee ••Lucenti, Martin Joseph, Jr. Lyon, Gregg Dale •MacIntyre, James Wesley Magnuson, Richard Charles Mai lie, Jacqueline Annette ••Maillet, Diane Marie Main, Dayle Patricia •Marcotte, Carolyn Sue Marquardt, John Stuart Martelle, Angela Jean •Martin, Janet Lynn Martin, Maurice Leo, Jr. •Martin, Michael Steven May, Norman Fabio McCarthy, Matthew Francis •McClure, Scott Robert •McGaughnea, Patrick Edward •McGuire, Kristin Ann McPherson, Williau Joseph •Mendicino, Ann Marie •Mennitt, Lilly Marie •Meunier, Christopher Robert Miller, Barbara Jean •Minadeo, John Paul •Mongeon, Kelli Lynn •Monroe, Craig Matthew Montague, Darryl Randolph •Moquin, DonnaSue More, Karen Alice •Morris, Catherine Jean ••Moser, Marianne Mott, Tina Marie Myers, Andrew Isadore Myers, Eric William •Neill, Susan Ellen •Nclligan, Cynthia Anne ••Nguyen, Kim-Nga Thi Nickel, Daniel John O'Connor, Daniel Patrick ••O'Kane, John William, Jr. Olio, Richard Paul •Orshan, Nathaniel Morris Orton, Charlene •Ose, Trevor Kent •Ovcrficld, Andrew Phillip •Overton, Jennifer Ann •Parent, Thomas Joseph Peck, Diane R.
