Memories 78 Students will definitely remember 1978 as the good ol' days. A new vice principal kept the school in line but not so much as to destroy any chance for a good time. The tradition of Homecoming was finally started by the Student Council in the fall. Essex caught glimpses of real class as thousands of dollars worth of Cadillacs drove by the school's new concrete bleachers. Fans kept their loyalty to their football heroes when we showed that the REB ELS did not Rule, but outdid themselves at the soccer games this year. The championship game at UVM was great! . . . even if we did lose. Hockey carried added excitement this year when our men from Essex showed the boys from Burlington how to fight. Fighting was not limited to the rink, however, the area in front of the cafeteria became a battleground for the well-known Greaser — Jock Fights.” People lost interest finally when they realized they could not tell who was a greaser and who was a jock. Anyone who did not know R-2 D-2 was hopelessly lost as STAR WARS become one of the most popular movies around. Seniors with a hint of culture flocked to Turning Point but even they could be overheard repeating Jackie Gleason's famous line from Smokey and the Bandit. But no movie had more of an influence than John Travolta's Saturday Night Fever. Discos became so popular that EJHS even had two disco dances (no one would ever have gone before this movie!) But entertainment was not only limited to movies; Essex's stage enjoyed much publicity. Everyone loved The Music Man and committed Seventy Six Trombones to heart. Also on stage, was the EJHS band in their new, hard-earned uniforms. The school computers showed the students who their perfect mates were in May. Although the dance was enjoyed, the other computer invader — the one that handed out detention slips for absences — was shunned by everyone. To escape the computerized society students turned to lots of parties. Brew lived on people’s minds as Billy Beer was rejected and Busch took its place. Getting small” with Steve Martin and his c i and crazy guys lifted Saturday Night Live to extreme popularity. Weekends were always filled with excitement because there is only one SENIOR YEAR!
