Dedication To someone more than a secretary . . . To someone always there . . . To someone willing to help. . . To someone ever smiling . . . To someone with great enthusiasm . . . To you Mrs. Williams we dedicate Memories ’78. Mrs. Williams 2 Memories 78 Students will definitely remember 1978 as the good ol' days. A new vice principal kept the school in line but not so much as to destroy any chance for a good time. The tradition of Homecoming was finally started by the Student Council in the fall. Essex caught glimpses of real class as thousands of dollars worth of Cadillacs drove by the school's new concrete bleachers. Fans kept their loyalty to their football heroes when we showed that the REB ELS did not Rule, but outdid themselves at the soccer games this year. The championship game at UVM was great! . . . even if we did lose. Hockey carried added excitement this year when our men from Essex showed the boys from Burlington how to fight. Fighting was not limited to the rink, however, the area in front of the cafeteria became a battleground for the well-known Greaser — Jock Fights.” People lost interest finally when they realized they could not tell who was a greaser and who was a jock. Anyone who did not know R-2 D-2 was hopelessly lost as STAR WARS become one of the most popular movies around. Seniors with a hint of culture flocked to Turning Point but even they could be overheard repeating Jackie Gleason's famous line from Smokey and the Bandit. But no movie had more of an influence than John Travolta's Saturday Night Fever. Discos became so popular that EJHS even had two disco dances (no one would ever have gone before this movie!) But entertainment was not only limited to movies; Essex's stage enjoyed much publicity. Everyone loved The Music Man and committed Seventy Six Trombones to heart. Also on stage, was the EJHS band in their new, hard-earned uniforms. The school computers showed the students who their perfect mates were in May. Although the dance was enjoyed, the other computer invader — the one that handed out detention slips for absences — was shunned by everyone. To escape the computerized society students turned to lots of parties. Brew lived on people’s minds as Billy Beer was rejected and Busch took its place. Getting small” with Steve Martin and his c i and crazy guys lifted Saturday Night Live to extreme popularity. Weekends were always filled with excitement because there is only one SENIOR YEAR! Everyone enjoyed the day, especially the boys and their greasy kid stuff. The first activity of the year was fall festiva week long festival of games, costumes and dances sponsored by the senior class. The week consisted of various days, each having its own Monday started the festival off with Sports Day. Essex jocks roamed the halls wearing their favorite sports apparel. Costumes included swim suits, football uniforms, baseball caps, and we even had a visit by everyone's favorite champ. Rocky! 64 Senior Hat and Shade Day was on the agenda for Wednesday, along with a new addition. Pet Day. Seniors flaunted their position with wild hats and crazy shades while everyone else brought their favorite stuffed animals and security blankets to school. Teachers enjoyed Thursday for the nice change of pace. In the spirit of Dress-Up Day students exchanged their Levi's and shirts for dresses, skirts, and suits. We hardly recognized each other!. That night the Junior Class sponsored a spaghetti dinner, followed by announcements of homecoming Kings and Queens. They were: Freshmen: Jim Littlefield and Laura Willey, Sophomores: Debbie Belanger and Steve McLaughlin, Juniors: Sue Beard and Brian Miller, Seniors: Vicki Desilets and Bill Currier. 65 Friday ended Fall Festival appropriately with Blue and Gold Day. Shades of the school colors appeared everywhere, on clothes, on backs, and even on faces! That night brought the Essex-Burlington football game and gave the school the chance to show their school spirit. Fall Festival ended Saturday night with the school turning out to boogie to the tunes of “Goliath.” Fall Festival marked the beginning of a new tradition. Homecoming Weekend. Friday night the first Homecoming parade took place with a parade of cars and Mr. Emery presenting roses to the Queens. 66 by puiting its scoring ma-into gear and straight win ol irubbing of Mt. No one seemed to mind the rain during Homecoming; everyone was just glad we won the football game. Girls had to make up for the football and soccer players during the blood-drawing, but it was a success anyway. These same girls had the advantage when the Sady-Hawkins Winter Ball made its appearance. Boys sweated it out until they were finally boogieing on the dance floor. People filled the auditorium for Talent Night and made it another Essex success. Success was also in style as Rice students came to Essex for the Field Day. These pictures show the fun that both schools enjoyed. . CE FESTIVAL SCHEDULE MAY 11 COMPUTER DANCE %-S 11 FIELD DAY 11-4 1} SPAGHETTI SUPPER 50U 1J KISS ALIVE. High School Theater Arts Cl Another Quality Presentation Of The EJHS Theater Arts Club The Essex Junction Theatre Arts Club opened its season with Harvey , a three act play by Mary Chase Smith. The play told the story of Elwood P. Dowd, a benign old man, and his pet rabbit, the invisible Harvey. Harvey brings joy to Elwood’s life but he brings nothing but grief to Veta and Myrtle Mae, Elwood’s niece and sister. To remedy the situation, under Veta's suggestion, Elwood is brought to Chumley’s Rest, an undertaking that results in disastrous and hilarious events. By the end of the third act everyone wonders who the real crazy person is, Elwood or the rest of the world. The play delighted audiences with its wit, charm, and truth. “Harvey” commanded the hard work of the excellent cast and crew. The sets were constructed and decorated by members of the Theatre Arts group. 132 133 Once again the EJHS Theatre Arts Club and Music departments collaborated to produce another exciting musical. The Music Man” involved 120 students, 10 middle school students, and 8 faculty and administrative members. The lively rhythmic music, combined with the humorous story of a con man’s attempt to win over a stubborn Iowan town proved to be an outstanding effort. Many hard working and talented students worked on songs, lines, dances, lighting, sound, makeup, and sets. The cast was supported by an equally hard working and talented orchestra. Under the direction of Yancy Stillenger, Beverly Cadmus, and John Preston, the students spent 3 months working on the play. As the final curtain closed and the last strains of applause were heard, everyone agreed they were 3 months to remember. 134 135 GoZaneeta!!!
