E FALL FESTIVAL Sponsored by the Student Council, the annual, week-long masquerade ranked high in joyful spirit FALL FESTIVAL Campus Clean-Up Day set the eventful Fall Festi- val week into full motion. By the end of the day the halls were spick-'n-span, courtesy of our friendly maid service . Tuesday found students clothed in ele- gance as Dress-Up Day was in session. Com- fort was abandoned in the name of excellent taste. 68 - FALL FESTIVAL Wednesday's theme held its traditional popularity as Greaser Day flung us back into the scene of a not-so-typical high school of the '50's. From the teeny-boppers at the sock hop in the gym to the tough-looking dudes at the rumbles, the spirit of joyful involvement swelled. Rexfived from the legacy of the Class of '76, a Senior Slave Auction once again took place . v-SJ MA a.ms..tk.. ..l.. V... lux D... n...t H -f c-.. , , L... r. ' FALL FESTIVAL- 69 Seniors went all-out on Thursday in the distinguished celebra- tion of Senior Hat and Shade Day. Coupled with this event was the increasingly popular Frizz Day, initiated through the inge- nuity of the Class of 75. The informal dress of the day proved extremely appropriate for the running of the Class Competi- tions. Friday's theme was Blue and Gold. For a day the high school lost its students and gained a nest of joyously active Hornets. The excitement and joy of Fall Festival Week wound to a close with the spirited football challenge between the Essex Hornets and the South Burlington Rebels . xfiq I .3 ., 'lv' 70 - FALL FESTIVAL 1 . 4.l1l 11- W ' w N - w W N x N X , N WI TER A b moment to tljhe throb of the fans' cheers, the feel- p From the whisper of the som er p p p ing of JOY spreads its emotionally encompassing arch to include all. CLUBS - 109 OUR COMMUNITY Events whirl by as we peek through time's porthole into the past year of '77 . Marching patriotically out of '76 to Bicentennial drumbeats, we joyously step into '77 with the flare of fashion styled in our frye boots. The school year began with women cadets revolutionizing the nation's military academies upon their entry. With the onset of winter, a rash of swine flu clinics plagued the country - arming the masses against the silent enemy of disease. Vice-President Mondale spoke at our school during his election campaign in Novemberg Jimmy Carter was elected to the office of 39th President of the United States. Attempting to return the government to the people in his domestic policies, Carter proposed a conservative budget coupled with conservation measures aimed at reduced consumption of natural resources. Carter's Human Rights Campaign became an underlying theme extended into foreign policies. Highly violating this campaign was Idi-Amin, President-for-life of Uganda. Maintaining his office by force, Amin has left a trail of death: a trail responsible for imprinting his name and his character traits indelibly into each American's mind. Memories of Hitler were painfully relived as Amin's rampage of terror swept throughout his country. Winter came for a visit with its own surprise package and got a little carried away with its abilities. The temperature dove into the unexplored depths of the mercury and traveled in record low regions. Snow-kist cit- rus crops in Florida suffered and some were destroyed by the unsympathetic, cold weather. The snow even man- aged to dance into the sunny southland, making its historical debut in the Bahamas. As the temperatures con- tinued downward, the price of coffee soared to phenomenal heights, transforming coffee breaks into tea breaks. Skirt lengths remained moderately long while hair length crept upward. The Farrah Fawcette hairstyle excited waves of new fashion, making Farrah Fawcette a household word. The Oakland Raiders kicked their way to the winning position of the Super Bowl and Mario Andretti sped to a victory in the Grand Prix West in Long Beach, California. Andretti's triumph marked the first time that an American has ever won a Grand Prix on home soil. The Skateboard fad zig-zagged its way back into existence as thousands of Americans supported the new mode of entertainment, exercise and transportation. Burlington's Memorial Auditorium hosted a Styx concert in March and the crowds were both overwhelming and overrambunctious. As fires destroyed more of the Burlington landmarks, attempts were made to reconstruct the injured city. The new Cathedral was consecrated in May and a new Burlington Mall opened its doors for trade on Church Street. Ti1t became the place in Essex Junction, being a home for the new craze of Pinball. Any day or night of the week managed to find an exuberant crowd frequenting Tilt. Each event of '77 has weaved a unique stitch into the intricate design of the perpetual pattern of time. Only theater has the ability to transformpersonalities in such a successful manner. Bvi- dence of this stands clearly in Bye Bye Birdie's character, Conrad Birdie. A quiet, shy person comes dramatically alive within his bold role. Bye Bye Birdie was definitely a successful spectacular theatrical performance. Mater Chaffee conducted her Latin students into a courtyard of Roman delight, the highlight of their Latin year. Rome came to life in exultation as the celebration wound together the traditional delecta- bles and dress of the ancient empire. Food enough for all included salads, fruits, pork and juice Qdis- guised as winej. Faithful slaves attended to the needs and catered to the whims of their majestic emperor, Tom Jones. First of all, anybody who wondered why I hung around this school for two weeks after classes had ended, it was for the yearbook. The yearbook was also responsible for my constant search for Dino, who despite his looks, can be impossible to find. I do thank him, however, for the pleasure of seeing a yearbook put together, no matter how long it took. I leave the 1978 Yearbook Staff with the warning that nothing is more boring than working on the yearbook at 11:00 PM in the yearbook room. They must realize that the yearbook requires constant sacrifice, including Dino coming to your house and wak- ing you up at 8:00 during vacation. CI did not even have time for break- fastj. Finally, for the sake of David May, I hope I never have the good luck to enter C-232 ever again. Kimberly Ann Desilets - Business Editor I FINALLY GOT IT ALL TOGETHER! I I ibut I forgot where I put ith. David Carlos May - Photography Editor To my brother and my friends Call eight of youyg I have not taken a giant step for mankind , but I have taken a giant step for me , myself, and I. This yearbook will be the best to be seen to this day by the EIHS student body and administration. It will please a large percent of you but for the rest of you who have a complaint, I'm glad I don't have to listen to it. Ignorance is the key to stupidity and I leave behind without total regret, the knowledge that experience was once in this school! Ioan Kathryn Tardie - Literary Editor It's been a great year all around. Dino and David both have the charac- teristics necessary to be successful in life. I expect to see their names con- nected with the big times - I know they won't let me down. SHEILA CLEAR, ART EDITOR THERE IS A PLACE I LONG TO BE UP IN THE MOUNTAINS WILD AND FREE. This book reflects your personal touch, the touch that adds qual- ity. You have gone out of your way to add that perfection. So we say thank you Sid Soren. Janet Soren, Dave Soren, Jim Benton, and Debbie Dorfner. HARR Y CLA RK The 1977 yearbook would like to take this space in the yearbook to thank you for everything you have done for us. You have been very honest with us. There were no hidden costs and we got a straight answer whenever we asked something. You have helped us with our creative ideas and have added to our yearbook knowledge. You made sure we knew what we were doing before we did. A lot of people usually just say give me, give me to you. Now we are saying thanks. We hope you will receive much pleasure from reading this book in the many years to come. Taylor Pub- lishing Company has a representative of whom they can be proud. There are a lot of people who have helped and it is hard to thank each of them individually so I'll say thanks to everyone. A very special thanks from me to the people who worked not for the recognition and popularity of being on the staff but because they cared enough to make sure the yearbook got finished. I would espe- cially like to thank two people who are close friends - Sid Soren for his consideration and personal touches and Harry Clark for his knowledge and understanding. Being editor I have made many friends. Some, like Harold Burroughs, will be close friends for life. Being editor has also given me the privi- lege of having the longest quote written in the entire yearbook. I'm not even conceited. Like our theme, Joy, we have had a lot of joy this year, from painting the yearbook room blue and hanging up pictures to producing your yearbook. Out of the three years I've worked on the yearbook, this year was the most special to me. Thank you for giving me the chance to publish an EIHS yearbook. This book is totally the product of student efforts. wx X .q- 5 5e:fY!it ,Q s i I Dino Anthony May Editor-in-Chief P.S. Thank you for reading this long editor's letter.
