« D 7«7f7i In In this yearbook we bring to you scenes of days spent at Essex Junction High School, which should bring back many cherished memories in years to come which otherwise might be forgotton. Tffi MISS PAMELA CRANDALL We, the Senior Class of 1953, lovingly dedicate the SABRE to our class advisor. Miss Crandall in appreciation of her interest and encouragement of our activities the past year. Her unfailing interest during these brief months has encouraged us to greater heights in life. THOMAS FLEMING Tom Fleming is much more to the Class of 1953 than a school janitor. He is seen through the hallways each day with a smiling face and is a friend to each of us; therefore we wish to extend our heartfelt memories by dedicating THE SABRE of 1953 to him. tiitot-in-aief Assist irt di'tor Junior Assist nt a i tors feature (litors 6iris ' Sports (liters Sous' Sports (liters Art (liter tSWrCHW wuiimv T9.ne Gregory Ha cH Hie Jo es Karol4 KniyM-mariene PorUr .Tea Robert A vAC J unc n Jeanne £lie Alfred Valyok tn mn Stevens Jr ry Bka che e y re Quinian felwifca £ Hes J’uwjeK Cornij w « JWn - Business Manager— ----------------------------- CLARENCE SHANGRAW Assistant Business Manager----------------------------LEE ABERNETHY Jr. Assistant Business Manager------------------------CHARLES FISH Advertising Manager-------------------------------- - MORRISON REED Assistant Advertising Manager----------------------RICHARD LAHAIE Jr. Assistant Advertising Manager- --------------MARILYN McKNIGHT Circulation Manager-------------------— WALTER COMPANION Circulation Manager-----------------------------------RICHARD DAVIS The planning, preparation, and distribution of your yearbook is a valuable experience in cooperation. Although we are not the largest class we're told that we are the most active. The sophomores led the race in being the mumpiest class in the school. Our freshman reception this year was a great success and we realized a large profit toward our class trip. On March 12, 1953, we held a Kake Walk dance and Marlene Paradee and Bum Willey were chosen as king and queen. To show how big our hearts really are we sent four sunshine boxes this year. Two to Mr. Walcott and two to Miss Kerner, who were both on the sick list. All the boxes were full and I hear there were even dates in Mr. Walcott's box. At Christmas time we played the part of Santa Claus to a needy family by contributing food, clothing, candy, and toys. I'm sure that everyone of us who had a part in this appreciated the truth of the saying, 'Tis better to give than to receive. The sophomore class was the first class to sell candy and soda at basketball games. The sophomore class is well represented in both the girls'and boys' basketball teams. Many members of our class are also connected with the musical activities. 6 44 1956 First row: R. Gauthier, F. Krebser, C. Wright, W. Ladue, W. Robert, D. Carpenter, R. President- - -Vice President Secretary----- Treasurer------ -----Robert Drury - - William Currier Deborah Carpenter George Marchacos LATIN BANQUET 'P'letAmcut 'pKytict The freshman class is now the largest class in school with a total membership of seventy-two. In our treasury we have the largest amount of money of any class that has come and gone. But this was achieved only by team-work and school spirit. All the beginning of this year we were a little confused with so many new people entering the class. Nevertheless, we have crossed the stump and are well on our way again. At the Freshman Reception we were initiated as full-pledged freshmen by the sophomores. That night we were very nicely entertained by the sophomores with a dance. Soon after school began we elected Butch Drury, president; William Currier, vice-president; Debby Carpenter, secretary; and George Marchacos, treasurer. A week before the national election, the class of ”56 put on an election for president of the United States. There were campaign committees, official ballots, and a very realistic voting booth. The election came out much like that of the National election with General Eisenhower winning by a landslide. The Latin 1 class sponsored a Latin Banquet March 19, 1953. In the beginning of the year this same class sponsored a Latin motion picture, Last Days of Pompeii. This was of great value because it stimulated interest in this course. First row: J. Hogan. The seventh grade elected the following officers for this school year. President, Joan Kellogg; Vice President, Clayton Paradis; Secretary, Maureen Sexton; Treasurer, Sandra Yates. Many activities have filled the calendar for these youngest members of the junior-senior school group. Peter Cross, Mattew Stevens, Carroll Bergeron, Gordon Hayden, John Duncan, and Robert Ward played basketball on the junior high team. Janet Parizo cheered on the J. V. squad. The junior high girls played basketball with a team from Essex Center. Classes in square dancing were organized during second semester. Several members of the class took part in the Talent Show. Valentine's Day was celebrated in fine style by the seventh and eighth grades together. Games, movies, and refreshments were the amusements of the afternoon. Classes also worked on special projects. Science 7 built a vivarium and kept snails, toads, and salamanders in it. Mr. Hogan brought a muskrat to class for the class to observe. The eighth grade event on two very interesting field trips with Mrs. Kimball, one to the Essex Junction Trust Company and the Indian Room there, the other to Legislature. Some members of the class went in a charted bus to see the movie Ivanhoe with Mrs. Weidman. COMMENTATOR is a monthly publication compiled by the students of Essex Junction High School. The COMMENTATOR was founded in 1944 and was published bi-monthly until 1946 when it was changed to every month. The first few years the paper had three columns. Last year. Editor Norman Sutherland changed it to a four column paper which we adopted this year. This year’s staff has been very cooperative and ambitious and deserves much credit. A great deal of credit goes also to our advisor, Howard O'Neil, who has helped us in many ways and has given us much of his valuable time. niiM.il mete ui uneicM. hi London were St. Paul’s Cathedral and the House of Parliament.
