The 1972 football Trojans suffered through a long season in the won-loss column winning only twice in nine starts. Lacking manpower, overall speed and position depth and at times hobbled with injiuies, the squad had to fight all year to maintain any level of respectability. Only 29 boys reported to practice in August, the lowest turnout in years; yet, except for injuries, 27 these were still aroimd at the end and were rewarded with their second victory, a 27-18 win over W. L. in the aimual Shrine Bowl. It was the second consecutive Shrine Bowl win for Essex. Seniors Billy Lumpkin, Bill Stevens and Kevin Bareford and Junior Lawrence Pierce captained the squad. Chuck Davis, playing both fullback and halfback, was the most consistent back and ran for 130 yards against Brentsville, Tommy Comer and Thomas Gray were bright spots defensively. Kevin Bareford made the All-District team at offensive tackle and Bill Stevens at offensive guard. Five Seniors, Bucky Brooks, Fred Bi- rchett, Billy Limtipkin, Bill Stevens and Kevin Bareford played four years of varsity football and one year of JV. Other seniors on the squad were Thomas Gray, Donald Johnson, Wayne Johnson, and Chuck Davis. Despite the lack of success on the field the squad maintained fine sportsmanship in all games, were congenial as a team and exhibited enthusiasm right up to the final game. 76 SENIOR PLAYERS CAPTAIN Football Scores ’72 Essex 0 8 0 0 0 6 7 8 27 Oppone nt West Point Lancaster King George Northumberland New Kent Rappahannock Brentsville Ladysmith Wash fit Lee 18 Teams in a huddle— Coach says Hey! The Essex Trojans Basketball Team under the leadership of their new coaching staff. Head Coach, Charles A. Shipp, and Karl Wachsmuth, the past year underwent an operation that hope will change an inexperienced team into one that will promote a win- ning attitude. As a coach, who has coached a winning team for the first three years as a teacher, I definitely feel that experience is the best teacher. It is good to start a season with young ball players be- cause you can expect at least two more years of hard work if your program is geared toward a winning goal. Although the Trojans had a 6 and 11 record, good things hap- pened that the record does not show. The record does not show that the yoimg inexperienced Trojans team beat the top team in the Northern Neck District, or how they exhibited pride which kept them in every game they played. Dining the summer prior to the 1972-’73 Basketball Season The Cagers coaching staff went in search for young men who were dedicated to their home, school, community, self and yes; the church. (We believe that a player who attends church will be hon- est with himself and our coaching staff.) Fifteen players out of thirty-five, were chosen to represent Essex High School Basketball Team. The Girls basketball squad having lost through graduation four of their starting line up, went into the 1972 season with an untried and inexperienced team, with the exception of Cora Jackson having started from scratch. The girls practiced diligently making up for the lack of experience by hard work, enthusiasm and the desire to come out on top. They were rewarded by placing second in the district season and second in the Basketball Tournament receiving a trophy for each. The end of the season also marks the end of four years of high school varsity basketball for the five starting players, Debbie Bareford, Mary Beth Franklin, Cora Jackson, Thea Jack- son, and Martha Montague, each having contributed greatly to the fine teams at Essex and will be missed. We wish them luck. Now we look forward to another good season with oirr promising junior and sophomore girls who made a great showing dtuing the year in backing up and giving outstanding performances to the team. 84 Co-captains Debbie Bareford and Cora Jackson. Although the golf team has had two outstanding winning season it has lost the district championship in the District-Regional Tour- nament each year. This years team consists of all first year players in the start of a rebuilding program that should show good results in a few years. 86 CROSS COUNTRY TEAM First row: Butch Doane, Orlando Beverly, Eddie Hammond. Second row: Sponsor; Mr. Hall Win Durham, Tommy Wyatt, Robert Tresco, Mike Newcomb. The season of ’72 brought with it success tempered with disappointment. Seven yovmg men, with only them- selves to bolster their spirits, magnificently against such established schools as Christ Church and Hampton Roads Academy and defeated them quite hardily. While being defeated by thin AAA power Lee-Davis, these Thin Clads proved that Cross Country is no respecter of size as we placed 4 men in the first 8. So it was thus with a keen sense of achievement and expectation when they leaped up and won the State Cross Country Meet at Williamsburg. However, due to certain circumstances such as sickness, injury, and tenseness, we were unable to defend the Ruimer-up Trophy glamored in ’71. With only one member graduating the ’73 season should be one of even greater achievement 87 BOYS’ TRACK ESSEX HIGH SCHOOL TRACK RECORDS EVENT PERSON TIME YEAR 1 00 yd. dash Harry Clarke 10.2 sec. 1971 220 yd. dash Harry Clarke 23.3 sec. 1971 440 yd. dash Trent Taliaferro 54.4 sec. 1971 880 nm Dann Brown 1.58.8 min. 1972 mile nm Dann Brown 4:33.5 min. 1972 2 mile nm Win Durham 10:37.1 min. 1972 120 high hurdles Chuck Durham 16.25 sec. 1972 1 80 low hurdles none 880 relay Emory Brooks David Brooks Joe Moore Harry Clarke 1:32.9 min 1971 mile relay David Brooks Joe Moore Ennis Moody Trent Taliaferro 3:37.7 min 1971 Long jump Joe Moore 17T0” 1971 Triple jump None High jump Larry Templeton 6’0” 1972 Pole vault None Shot Paul Zion 417” 1972 Discus Paul Zion iir3” 1972 The 1972 Trojan Track Team was blessed with one of the finest distance nmners in the state, in Dann Brown. Dami closed out his brilliant career by establishing school records in both the 880 yard nin and the mile. He was undefeated in the mile nm during the regular season and District and Regional meets. His goal of a state championship in both events was crushed when on the second lap of the mile he broke his ankle. However, a long and succe.ssful career is ahead of him in college. Our graduating seniors contributed greatly to the .success of this years team. Four other school records were set during the year by the seniors and one was .set by a .sophmore. Paul Zion was a double record sophomore, in the Shot and Discus. 88 GIRLS’ TRACK Girls track for the 1972-73 season has been moved from a Fall event to the Spring in order to comply with all other area s in the state. Because of this change the try outs have not taken place yet, but we will be building around the nucleus of last years team with the hope of bring back to Essex the district championship which these girls have held over the years. We would like to extend our appreciation for the many contributions of effort, discipline, sportsmanship, and school spirit shown by the following Seniors: Katy Chamock, Phyllis Grant, Mary Beth Franklin, Fay Green, Gora Jackson, and Thea Jackson. During their years as members of the track team they have piled up scores of points and collected many ribbons and medals bringing success, honor, and victory to Essex High School. Jerry Smith and Martin Jones also duty in the outfield. Williams and Clark gave the Trojans excellent pitching all season. Ben Ashton led the hitters with a .408 average and Clarence Covington added excellent speed in the lead off spot. Steve and Boyd won a co-award for most valuable due to their fine pitching. Others who made up the squad were Tommy Comer, Jimmy Harmon, George Johnson, Douglas Davis, Kevin Lankford, Wayne Schools and Randy Birchett. Coach Ashton worked with the squad. Leading in defense were Agnes Andrews, Sue Ball, Yvonne Marks and Debbie Pillsbury. The pitcher, Debbie Bareford, contributed a strong pitching effort. An example of this was the Rappahonnock Vs. Essex game in which she had twelve strike outs. The team was backed by a strong second string and the coaching of Miss Mar- garet Brown. The softball team was one of the strongest ever fielded, and the Trojan girls are planning for a successful season next year. 94 The girls last year were very successful and from the above picture also happy. 95 ANNUAL STAFF The Essex High School Annual Staff, consisting of Butchie Brooks, Vicky Courtney, Pat Bryant and Brenda Prince with their sponsor Mrs. Margaret Morgan have one thing to say to its readers and that is: “We spent many long hours working on this year book.
