TROJANS LAY FOUNDATION FOR 71-72 TEAM 44 A well played game followed hv a lopsided loss. . . . The final record was two wins and seven losses. It wasn’t a very impressive record but it served as an excellent foundation for next year’s Trojan football team. A losing streak of five games set the stage for the first Fall Festival in Essex High School history. The Trojans opposed the Yellow-Jackets of Ladysmith. From the opening kickoff till the final buzzer, the Trojans dominated every phase of the game. The first string scored time and time again in the half with well executed running plays coupled with perfect pass plavs. The defense swarmed over Ladysmith, stopping their every drive before they could get .started. In the sec- ond half, the second and third strings took over for Essex, and continued to run up the score. At the final buzzer the score stood — Trojans 65, Yellow-Jackets ()!! This lopsided win will go in Essex High School’s record books and stand forever. Front line - Trent Taliaferro, Kevin Bareford, Bruce Burton, Todd flenley, Neil Chadwick, Ben Rennolds, Jerry Dickinson. Backfield - Leroy Green, Paid Zion, Billy Lumpkin, T. L. J.V. “GRIDDERS ” FIRST SEASON A SUCCESS The Essex Trojans J.V. team played five games this season, winning four of those games. The J.V.’s defeated Rappahannock, twice by scores of 6-0 and 12-6. They split two games with A.T. Johnson by scores of 14-12 and 0-32. The Trojans finished their season by defeating Middlesex by the score of 6-0. This record was established although only two experienced players began the season, and the team was generally smaller than its opponents. Credit can be given to some fine individual perform- ances but every team member contrib- uted to the success of the team. Team members not pictnred are George Washington, Tim Cray, and Bernard Covington. 48 GOLF TEAM TEES OFF Mr. Robertson, Duke Hammond, Andy Graff, Dann Brown, Lary Templeton, Pearce Garner, Ghuck Durham, Paul Zion, Joey Burrough, Michael Lowery. In its initial season, the golf team has been involved in meets with King George and has scheduled meets with the golf teams from Lancaster and Northumberland. Co-captains Harry Clarke and Solomon Redman 55 56 57 After hax ing lost many of their first games this year, the J. team really got on the ball. On Saturday, November 13, they worked, with the help of the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, all day at Gaines Esso. They pumped gas, washed windshields, checked oil, and learned a little of what makes a car “tick”. They pumped over one thousand gallons in less than twelve hours. The Cheerleaders have sold cleaner, spirit ribbons, pom pons, and sponsored a Student - Faculty basketball game to raise money to pay for their new wool uniforms. This money also went to pay for sending their co-captains to Cheering Camp where they learned many new cheers. 62 Wtt Melanie Montague, Mary Gouldin, Addie Whitaker, Sue Hill, Shirley Robinson, Roberta Colombo, Debbie Jones, and Fay Green. 63 J.V.
