CLASS HISTORY In September, 1958, upon the campus of Essex County High School assembled sixty three seekers of further knowledge. We were divided in two sections with Miss Ellen Rice and Miss Janie Rose as our sponsors. An important event of the year was the Miss Essex Contest which our class was fortunate enough to win with Carolyn Gaines as our queen. Another school term rolled around and we were enrolled for the year with forty -one students. We were again divided into two sections; our sponsors were Mr. Leon Sivells and Reverend Walter Henderso n. The class officers for the year were: President, Martha Pratt; Vice President, Linda Richardson; Secretary, Thomas Jones; and Treasurer, Betty Lomax. The outstanding athletes of the year were; Earl Harris, Thomas Jones, Charles Carter, Roberta Richardson, Carole Harris, Joyce Ware, Clara Harris, Jean Fauntleory and Linda Richardson. Again the Miss Essex Contest was won by our class with Martha Pratt as queen. As Sophomores our number was reduced to thirty-five; however, we continued to progress in our classes and extracurricular activities. The class officers were: President, Charles Burton; Vice President, Roberta Richardson; Secretary, Doris Bundy; Treasurer, Brenda Brown. At last we had reached the half way mark and the status of Juniors in high school. The class was con- solidated with Miss Ellen Rice as our sponsor. The officers were; President, Linda Richardson; Vice Pres- ident, Doris Bundy; Secretary, Joyce Ware; Treasurer, Brenda Brown. The highlight of this year was the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The theme of this gala event was Moonlight and Roses. We were repre- sented in athletics by: Carole Harris, Brenda Brown, Roberta Richardson, Linda Richardson, Jean Faunt- leory, Joyce Ware, Doris Bundy, Carolyn Gaines, Carolyn Phillips, Ernestine Richardson, Charles Bur- ton, Charlie Layne, Charles Carter, Oscar Fortune, Douglas Braxton, and Earl Harris; in Dramatics by: Carole Harris, Roberta Richardson, Linda Richardson, Jean Fauntleory, Betty Lomax, Charles Burton, and Thomas Jones. We also had representatives in other clubs such as Student Council, NFA and NHA, Science -Math Club, and FBLA. During this year our class attended the annual High School Day at Vir- ginia State College in Petersburg, Virginia. Our final year, September, 1962, arrived and with it the glory of being classified as Dignified Seniors. The class elected as its officers President, Charles Burton; Secretary, Doris Bundy; Vice President, Linda Richardson; Assistant Secretary, Jean Fauntleory; Chaplain, Carole Harris; Treasurer, Brenda Brown. Then the hustle and bustle began of selecting a class ring, invitations, taking pictures and putting to- gether materials for the school annual of 1963 under the able guidance of our advisor and Thomas Jones, the editor-in-chief of the Tiger Staff. Representing the class in the Miss Essex Contest was Joyce Ware. We were represented in athletics by: Carole Harris, Brenda Brown, Roberta Richardson, Linda Richardson, Jean Fauntleory, Joyce Ware, Doris Bundy, Carolyn Gaines, Carolyn Phillips, Ernestine Richardson, Charles Burton, Charlie Layne, Charles Carter, Oscar Fortune, Douglas Braxton, and Earl Harris; in Dramatics by: Carole Harris, Roberta Richardson, Linda Richardson, Jean Fauntleory, Betty Lomax, Charles Burton, and Thomas Jones.
