Christopher THE PRINCIPAL PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1963: Our sincere congratulations are extended to the graduating class of 1963 and to the yearbook staff and sponsor for their efforts which are exhibited in this publication. The importance of this yearbook cannot be over emphasized. This year, our school facilities have expanded and have undergone many changes. The joys, excitement, pride, oppor- tunities and challenges that these facilities have provided cannot be recorded within the pages of a yearbook. However, this annual can serve to recall those moments that have been dear to the hearts of us all. To those of you who are leaving, the memories of your eventful school life here as depicted by these pictures will forever be treasured by you and your posterity. It is our hope that this yearbook will remind you of those things that we have tried to teach in an attempt to prepare you for the changes and challenges that you will inevitably face. May each of you accept the vast responsibilities and challenges before you and work diligently for the greatest achievement possible. James H. CLASS MOTTO Not merely to exist, but to amount to something in life. CLASS COLORS CLASS FLOWER Black and White Red Carnation CLASS HISTORY In September, 1958, upon the campus of Essex County High School assembled sixty three seekers of further knowledge. We were divided in two sections with Miss Ellen Rice and Miss Janie Rose as our sponsors. An important event of the year was the Miss Essex Contest which our class was fortunate enough to win with Carolyn Gaines as our queen. Another school term rolled around and we were enrolled for the year with forty -one students. We were again divided into two sections; our sponsors were Mr. Leon Sivells and Reverend Walter Henderso n. The class officers for the year were: President, Martha Pratt; Vice President, Linda Richardson; Secretary, Thomas Jones; and Treasurer, Betty Lomax. The outstanding athletes of the year were; Earl Harris, Thomas Jones, Charles Carter, Roberta Richardson, Carole Harris, Joyce Ware, Clara Harris, Jean Fauntleory and Linda Richardson. Again the Miss Essex Contest was won by our class with Martha Pratt as queen. As Sophomores our number was reduced to thirty-five; however, we continued to progress in our classes and extracurricular activities. The class officers were: President, Charles Burton; Vice President, Roberta Richardson; Secretary, Doris Bundy; Treasurer, Brenda Brown. The students that participated in the Math and Science Conference were: Charles Burton, Linda Richardson, Thomas Jones, Betty Lomax, Roberta Richardson, Carolyn Gaines, Carolyn Phillips and Jean Fauntleory. At last we had reached the half way mark and the status of Juniors in high school. The class was con- solidated with Miss Ellen Rice as our sponsor. The officers were; President, Linda Richardson; Vice Pres- ident, Doris Bundy; Secretary, Joyce Ware; Treasurer, Brenda Brown. The highlight of this year was the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The theme of this gala event was Moonlight and Roses. We were repre- sented in athletics by: Carole Harris, Brenda Brown, Roberta Richardson, Linda Richardson, Jean Faunt- leory, Joyce Ware, Doris Bundy, Carolyn Gaines, Carolyn Phillips, Ernestine Richardson, Charles Bur- ton, Charlie Layne, Charles Carter, Oscar Fortune, Douglas Braxton, and Earl Harris; in Dramatics by: Carole Harris, Roberta Richardson, Linda Richardson, Jean Fauntleory, Betty Lomax, Charles Burton, and Thomas Jones. We also had representatives in other clubs such as Student Council, NFA and NHA, Science -Math Club, and FBLA. During this year our class attended the annual High School Day at Vir- ginia State College in Petersburg, Virginia. Our final year, September, 1962, arrived and with it the glory of being classified as Dignified Seniors. The class elected as its officers President, Charles Burton; Secretary, Doris Bundy; Vice President, Linda Richardson; Assistant Secretary, Jean Fauntleory; Chaplain, Carole Harris; Treasurer, Brenda Brown. Then the hustle and bustle began of selecting a class ring, invitations, taking pictures and putting to- gether materials for the school annual of 1963 under the able guidance of our advisor and Thomas Jones, the editor-in-chief of the Tiger Staff. Representing the class in the Miss Essex Contest was Joyce Ware. We were represented in athletics by: Carole Harris, Brenda Brown, Roberta Richardson, Linda Richardson, Jean Fauntleory, Joyce Ware, Doris Bundy, Carolyn Gaines, Carolyn Phillips, Ernestine Richardson, Charles Burton, Charlie Layne, Charles Carter, Oscar Fortune, Douglas Braxton, and Earl Harris; in Dramatics by: Carole Harris, Roberta Richardson, Linda Richardson, Jean Fauntleory, Betty Lomax, Charles Burton, and Thomas Jones.
