In these closing days of our years at Essex County High School, out assignment is to collect and record some of the noteworthy deeds and events that have been performed and taken place during out high school career. In September, 1956, we assembled in the high school auditorium to begin our high school training. Since there was such a large number of us, the class was divided into two sections. One section was sponsored by Miss M. R. Davis and the other by the late Mr. R. H. Vaughan. The officers of each class were: Presidents, Edna Golden and Elsie Holmes; Secretaries, Mary Segat and Blanche Reynolds; and Treasurers, Frankie Bowens and Purnell Young. Many of the students participated in extra-curricula activities such as the Dramatic Club, choir, softball team, base- ball team, basketball team. Student Council and Safety Patrol. Lucille Greene, Blanche Reynolds, Frankie Bowens and Henry Hill were the top athletics of the freshman class. Warner Robinson received the award for being the outstanding freshman actor in the play The Leptichaun. Our sophomore year found us with our same homeroom teachers and our class officers were Elsie Holmes and Naomi Ruffin, Presidents; Edna Golden and Florine Payton, Secretaries; and Frankie Bowens and Purnell Young, Treasurers. Julia Golden, Naomi Ruffin, Robert Ransome, and Warner Robinson represented our class at the Math-Science Con- ference which was held at the Thomas Hunter High School in Mathews County. Time passed quickly and our junior year began. Our class was consolidated and our sponsor was Mr. A. R. Bowens. The class officers were; Charles Tompkins, President; Elsie Holmes, Vice-President; Edna Golden, Secretary; and Frankie Bowens Treasurer. Blanche Reynolds, Gladys Robinson, Leroy Gray, Warner Robinson and Charles Tompkins participated in a play en- titled Fog on the Valley which won a superior rating at the Drama Festival held at the Ralph Bunche High School, Leroy Gray was named the Best Male Actor of his performance. One of the most memorable events of this year was the Junior-Senior Prom. The decorations were centered around a starry garden scene and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. At last we were seniors, the big year had finally arrived. Charles Tompkins was elected President; Blanche Reynolds, Vice-President; Edna Golden, Secretary; and Ann Wright, Treasurer. Our sponsor for the beginning of the year was Mrs. M. B. Poles, who later transferred to Hamilton Holmes High Scho ol. After her transfer. Miss E. O. Rice became our sponsor. As seniors our most prized project was the preparing of the school annual for publication. Our staff consisted of Warner Robinson, Editor-in-Chief; Edna Golden, Business Manager; Gladys Robinson, Subscription Manager; and Blanche Reynolds and Ann Wright, Feature Editors. Participating in extra-curricula activities were Elsie Holmes, Blanche Reynolds, Ann Wright, Lucille Greene, Ella Gaines, Francis Johnson, Robert Wright and Ryland Bundy - band; Blanche Reynolds, Ann Wright, Gladys Robinson, Leroy Gray and Charles Tompkins - dramatics; Lucille Greene, Blanche Reynolds, Mary Johnson, and Shirley Johnson - softball; Henry Hill, Norman Tompkins, Charles Tompkins, John Cauthorne and James Rollins - baseball; Purnell Young, Charles Tompkins, Robert Ransome and Edna Golden - Student Council; Henry Hill and Frankie Bowens - basketball. As we leave Essex County High School, we shall take with us many memories. The years that we have spent with- in its walls shall be forever with us; and as we look back years from today, we shall recall them with much nostalgia.
