FACULTY THE CLASS OF 1966 DEDICATES THIS YEAR BOOK TO МЕ. JOSEPH FORDE The memories that are engraved in the hearts of men are not eternal. Yet for some dec- ades to come men, who as youths were influenced by the late Joseph Forde, will long remember Mr. Forde's measured judgments, as well as his very gentle humor in the class- room. His influence went beyond the walls of the classroom to the playing fields where he so ably performed his duties as a coach and an advocate of good sportsmanship. We the class of 1966 salute his nobility of character and dedicate our yearbook to the legacy he has passed on to us.. А D M I IN I 5 T R А ЈЕ 1 О N Message from the Principal To you, the Graduate of 1966 For some of you, the formal education beyond High School is not possible now, and you are obliged to select a vocation. Be assured that this in no way need limit your suc- cess---especially if you are forceful purposeful and avidly dedicated to self-improvement. Perhaps the most important thing you have to face now is to find the right job. Do not compromise by selecting one for the relatively easy, quick money it will afford you, and sacrifice the opportuni ties for which you might be better qualified. Patience is as much a prerequisite to success as enthusiasm, ambition, intelligence, and a desire to explore. АП these I wish to you, together with many years of happiness and success. FIELD DAY Physical Fitness Physical Fitness Mrs. Зете ћу Mrs. Jacangelo Mrs. Murphy Mrs. Feid Che Cechnician In 1913, the Legislature of the State of New Jersey passed an act permitting the establishment of voca- tional schools on what is known as the “County Unit” basis. Prior to the passage of this act, the boys and girls living in the smaller municipalities of Essex and other counties of the State had no opportunity to obtain vocational education. This act aimed to provide ш а larger measure equal educational opportunity Гог all, to avoid unnecessary duplication and ехре зе and to obtain a greater degree of efficiency ш Ше administration oÍ vocational education through centralization and the operation of larger units. In 1915 Essex County took advantage of the provisions of the school act of 1913 and established the “Board of Education of the Vocational Schools in the County of Essex”. The Board was created {ог the express purpose oÍ organizing, operating and administering a system oÍ vocational schools that would pro- vide equal opportunity for the boys and girls of all the munic ipalities of the county. The first vocational school in Essex County was established by the Board of Education of the City of Newark in the year 1910: When the county schools were established in 1915 there began talk of duplication of effort. Both the county and Newark expande d their programs during the next 10 years, with the county schools serving chiefly those communities in Essex county outside of Newark. The Newark Board of Education and the Essex County Board of Vocational Education entered into agree- ment whereby the County Board agreed to purchase for the sum of $1,100,000 the Newark Boys Vocational school and equipment, the Newark Building Trades School and енна, а і Ше Ме магк Girls Vocational School equipment only. In оссша се with this agreement, the County Board of Vocational Education as- sumed control of these schools on January 1, 1925. Until 1938 the County Vocational Schools were conducted as special vocational schools, with no high school status, offering skilled trade courses two years in length VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS FORMED Plans were made to have the schools approved by the State Board of Education as High Schools. Plans were also formulated to include technical as well as skilled trade courses in order to better meet the needs of an industrial nation which was developing new technical knowledge and skill at an unprecedented rate. Surveys of industry indicated that there was a need for from 3 to 7 technical workers in New Jersey for every engineer yet far few technicians were being trained than engineers. SCANNING OF COURSES: An almost constant scanning of courses to make sure that the county schools are not only up to date in their instruction, but that they are not offering instruction, which is no longer useful in industry, nor in- struction which can be effectively offered by the local districts acting independently. Once again the “Supreme” Machine Shop has proved Из superiority over the ‘‘Mighty’’ Auto Shop in the Junior-Senior Intramural basketball league, defeating them by a score of 35 to 24. Machine shop controlled the tap-off and scored the first points. The heat of the battle was so fierce that subsitution was limited. Sharp shoot- ing by both sides highlighted the game. The vast experience of the students of the Supreme Machine Shop showed as they took on a 13 to 3 lead on the Mighty Auto Shop in the first ten minutes of the game. Some with good and some with bad records, but we doubt that anyone, after watching our team this year, can say that our boys did not give it everything they had. It is therefore only right, that we praise each and every member of the team for their excellent job of re- presenting us as sportsmen and gentlemen. he nucleus of the “65-66” team came from the J.V. of last year's team. We at Tech expected a great deal from our courts- ters, “Wonder Boy Johnson, “Speedy” Nicholson, “Shorty” Macargo, Leeping Jones, and “Нарру”” Maravi. In singling out individuals, must we say that Ron Johnson did a terrific job with his ball handling and his aggressive manner. Ken Nicholsen's ball handling and sharp eye kept us in many a game. Burt Jones and Ken Maravi were responsible for the backboards and their jobs were handled in a commendable man- ner. Joe Wadlowski came through from the side court when we needed a helping hand. Ben Macargo, al- though the smallest on the squad, proved he could hold his own, both in handing the ball and in scoring. Thiswill be a long remembered basketball season to the graduating class of “66”. Adolph P. Stanziale Coach Neal Roche, J.V. Expansion and contraction will go on and will continue to be governed by the principles of need and the premise that the county unit showed those things and only those things it can do better than the local dis- tricts acting independently. BLOOMFIELD TECH. Our school originated in West Orange, and shortly thereafter was located at Тогу’з corner. The building caught fire and was destroyed (1927). After the fire, the school moved to Montelair. It was located at the corner of Forest and Chestnut Streets. The building had been previously used by the Montclair School Sys- tem’s Board of Education. In that school, there were approximately 100 students and a total of eight in- structors. The school had six shops besides a few academic classrooms. These shops were: 1. Auto Mechanics 2. Carpentry 3. Electric 4. Plumbing 5. Drafting 6. Food Management. When the school was in Montclair it was possible to complete the course in two years, however, no high school diploma was offered. The school was finally relocated in Bloomfield in September 1931 after the present building was constructed. When we were established in Bloomfield our school started to grow. From the previous 100 students, it grew to 250 students, and from eight instructors to fifteen. After the move to Bloomfield, two shops were dropped because of lack of interest. These were Plumbing and Food Management. However, there were two more shops added. These were Aviation and T.V. as well as Radio. In 1937 the course was extended from two years to three years. In 1942 the school was established as a four year high school offering а high school diploma. During World War II our school was in operation twenty- four hours a day training war workers. Our school is a part of the Exxes County Vocational and Technical School System. The History and growth of the Essex County Vocational Schools have paralleled the growth in importance of the skilled mechanic and the technican in our modern industrial society. This growth has been so rapid since the beginning of World War II that it virtually constitutes a second industrial revolution. More complex equipment, more complex curricula, more highly trained instructors and better qualified students have all been required to meet the ever-increasing demands of industry and commerce for greater and better skills. THE JOKER'S CORNER Two men were seated in a bus. One of them noticed that his friend had his eyes closed. ‘‘What’s the matter, Bill?” he asked, “Feeling ill?” “No I'm all right, answered Bill, “И” в just that I hate to see all these ladies standing. Tom: “Why did you have to go to an eye surgeon just for drinking coffee?” Bob: ‘‘I left the spoon in the cup.” Sergeant: “Ноу does your uniform fit you, soldier?” Private: “The shirt fits all right, but the trousers are too loose around the armpits.” AROUND OUR HALLS WHO ...13 the senior homeroom teacher that gets mistaken [ог a senior? ...is the girl Gary G. chauffers around? ...15 the senior boy that could pass for one of the 4 Seasons, could it be Joe R.?
