gil-v-1 + Clfifl g FCLC Track whlch IS the newest sport m this school was started 1n the sprmg of 1949 by Mr Hank Ryan At that txme Mr Ryan was teaching Health In our 1n1t1al season he came up wlth a good start wmmng 3 out of 6 dual meets The team won two meets from Our Lady of the Valley and defeated East Side I-hgh School for the1r other vlctory The three losses came at the hands of Barrlnger Umon and Nutley Hlgh Schools In June 1949 Mr Ryan transferred to Irvington Tech and Mr George OConnor replaced hlm as the Health Teacher and Coach of the Clnder Sport Durmg hls first season he came up wlth a team that fimshed w1th 2 wms and 4 losses Fne of the meets were dual Two reasons for thns poor season were that Mr O Connor had a small number of boys on the team and we took part m field events agamst other schools Our boys had no ex perlence wnth field events but they declded to take a chance We made out good nn the runnmg events but the polnts scored agamst us m the field events was the difference ln the final outcome Thls season Mr O'Connor expects to have a larger team and he hopes to have access to the Boys Park for practlce nn the field events as well as runnmg. fl! ML Cfufllgky is a 6'4 center who played for the Varsity Basket- ball team three seasons and' scored a total of 309 points. He is one of the better all-around players to play for this school. .szerman porfer made the Varsity Basketball team in his second year after a season with the jayVee's. Although he was not a regular starter Sherman was awarded two Varsity letters. annie Jeanneffe earned his Varsity letter last year as a pitcher on the Baseball team. He won two games and lost none and should have a good season this year. gene Coriok won a Varsity letter in Baseball last year as a first baseman. Gene who played only seven games last season will probably start at Hrst this year. He will also be one of the long ball hitters of the team. 3011? mega Safa became a member of the Varsity Baseball team last season after playing with the JayVees. Tony hopes to see more action this year and should better his last season's record. 'lflifhe Egan: won his Varsity lcttcrs on the diamond during the ,49, '50, and '51 seasons. Bill stole fifteen bases last season and batted .382. Willie was selected as a second string third baseman on the All-County Team.
