e Presented, by Senior Class Essoy County Vocational © Technical High School 200 North 1 2th Street Newark, New Jersey Foreword, The world is a wide and wonderful place - full of beauty and sordidness, promise and frustration, gaiety and trage- dy. During the year 1966-67, we became increasingly con- scious of our new relations with the mysterious East, largely because of the war in Viet-Nam. Perhaps we need to be reminded of the great contribution of the Orient to the serenity and lasting beauty of life. These are shown in the decorative arts which we have adapted for this year's ATHENA. We dedicate this yearbook to the search for peace and jus- tice among all men everywhere. 3:15 and all is well - no more lost freshmen helplessly roaming the halls, the clicking of type- writers has stopped, the ringing of bells does not echo through the halls, and the hustle and bustle and voices of the upperclassmen can no longer be heard - until 8:15 tomorrow morn- ing. Our Business Ma- chines girls learn almost every possible procedure to use figures. They start with simple addition problems and work their way up to maneuvers, which to some of us, may seem almost impossible. Their skills are improved daily, by hard work, until one day they will leave Essex High to enter the business world with great confidence. Striving for speed and perfection, their hands seem to be dancing as they apply the proper rhythm to their work. [ТИРҮҮ The Comptometer is only о е of the many machines which Mr. Corson explains to Marie Ciavarella the procedures con- cerned in operating one of the various machines in his room. the Business Machines girls learn to operate. Excellent at figures, our Business Machines girls work fast and accurately to solve their problems. Beauty Culture Our Beauty Culture girls work hard to achieve their goal. As Sophomores they are noted for their little pin eurls. As Juniors hair coloring is practiced and almost any color can be seen. As Seniors they have developed into fine hair stylists and are now ready to go out in the world to cut, curl, comb, and manicure, knowing they will be successful beauti- cians. Senior year is a very busy one for our Beauty Culture girls. Appointments are made by outside eustomers and these girls apply their skills to the very best of their ability. Evelyn Doto displays her talent on Eileen Walsh. Joann Rippo sets the hair of one of her class- mates, AMAS Heine dishes Finishing touches are added to a custom- Giving a manicure is not as easy as you may think! Plenty of time er. Our outside customers always leave and study goes into this process, the school more than satisfied. Technical, Secretary Our Technical Secretary girls are trained in various fields of the business world. As Sophomores they are faced with the many new and unfamiliar skills which they are expected to learn. Curly cues which seem impossible to read or write, become our Technical Secretary girls’ future — Steno! But as Juniors they gain confidence and discover there is still a great deal to be learned. In the Senior year the fear of the Sophomore is gone, and the confi- dence of the secretary begins. She leaves with her head up high, knowing she can now enter the busi- ness world with pride. In the Senior year our Technical Secretary girls are sent out to the various offices Diane Carey transcribes from Techni- within the school for “supervised office experience. Here Gloria Linfanti learns cal Procedure notes. to operate the switchboard, while Adelaide De Fonseca prepares to transcribe. Shorthand notes are taken in various classes and from them our Technical Secretary girls must transcribe quickly and accurately. Beverly Lepore and Phyllis Orsini strive for perfection. Diane Benn watches closely as Pat Trento applies finishing touches to her painting. Carolyn Allen applies her skills carefully. The Art girls contribute a great deal to Essex High. Viewing the windows at the main entrance one can see the great artistic ability these girls possess. Their classroom, which is used as their workshop, has still further proof of their talents. When Marcia De’Faria points to her display in Mrs. leaving Essex High to go into their chosen field Kellys room. their skills will be applied successfully. Paintings are but a few of the many jobs the art girls do. Our FOODS DEPARTMENT is kept very busy in order to meet the 11:45 “Starvation Crew.” The Food girls are truly appre- ciated in Essex High. Although there are few, their skills are be- yond compare. Throughout their high school years, they are con- stantl y improving in t heir baking, cooking, and preparation of dif- ferent dishes for our faculty members. In their Senior year, they may leave with confidence, for they can find such jobs as die- ticians, cooks, and other positions in the food industry. Wait until the girls get a wiff of this. Oh dear — Is that ham your putting in the ham sandwich?? Francis D'Alessio is all smiles when cleanup time rolls around. Dressmoking Many fashions are created by our Dressmaking girls. In their Sophomore year they are amazed by the new equipment and new expressions used. Darts, se ams, and tucks are but a few of the pro- cesses they perform. As Juniors they are asked to design many more fashions, and they apply their skills carefully. As Seniors they are capable of de- signing their own prom gowns. They may leave Essex High knowing they will achieve their goals in the world of fashion. Designing their own patterns takes a great deal of concentration and skill. Joanne Mandra applies the finishing touches which add perfection. Measuring tapes, pins, and needles are some of the equipment the Dressmaking girls rely on. Many new and exciting fashions are created by our Dressmaking girls. Our school is a division of the Essex County Vocational Schools, an educational system maintained by the people of the county to provide training for profitable and effi- cient employment and instruction in responsible citizen- ship. The Essex County Vocational and Technical High Schools and Adult Technical Schools are directed by its Board of Education, and supervised and administered by a group of experienced and dedicated educators. With kindness and unself- ishness, through a voluntary charity project, the high school and adult students join together in their homerooms to gath- er gifts for needy children of all ages. Through the school's generosity we express our desire to help others have a brighter and more joyous Christmas.
