SSSR BUSINESS MACHINES The abacus was one of the first efficient calculating instruments ever devised. In fact, it is still being used in comparison tests for speed and accuracy with our modern-day business computers. However, today’s machines are able to handle the very complicated problems as well as the simple addition and multiplication examples in a few seconds. When we first entered Room 218 as sophomores, we stood in awe of all those comptometers. Our fingers seemed reluctant to move to the correct numbers and they were forever getting stuck between the keys. What a great relief it was to finally add a column and come out with the right answer. Bookkeeping, with its ever-growing work sheets, helped us to understand another phase of the world of figures. Having more ability, we, as juniors, were ready to solve advanced problems on the Sensimatic and the Bookkeeping machines. What a year for homework! If we didn’t have bookkeeping accounts to balance, we were analyzing cases in law, drawing charts and graphs for eco- nomics, or trying to become amateur stockbrokers. Along with our billing, computing, and typing practice, we added new office experience to our senior year—the major one, figuring payrolls. To locate that missing penny took hours of checking. It was most satisfying for us to realize that we could operate approximately ten different computers, along with the vari-typer, switchboard, dictaphone, and mimeograph. We felt proud of this accomplishment and were ready to find a position where we could demonstrate our skill.
