TECHNICAL SECRETARY Ever since the birth of the alphabet, scribes have found it necessary to be skilled in the use of shorthand. It is believed by historians that the use of symbols dates back to almost 2,000 B.C. These systems of writing have become the building blocks for our present-day shorthand. We prepared ourselves as sophomores with a new fountain pen, clean steno pad, and two freshly-sharpened No. 2 pencils. These tools were used to record baffling dots, curves, and dashes based on such strange sounds as (€? ) oi, ( ) oo, and ( € ) ith. It was the beginning of a three-year period for interpreting blueprints. Before we realized it, we were juniors. We now not only had to write shorthand and read it, but were responsible for transcribing it accurately. The mimeograph, dictating machines, and the comptometer helped broaden our understanding of the duties we would be responsible for in an office. Our last year proved most rewarding. Our arms ached as we kept practicing to attain a faster speed in shorthand. Some of us developed a comma complex in transcription. Several periods were spent taking dictation in Manufacturing Processes for our Technical Procedures notebooks. Blueprint reading progressed from a simple drawing of a circle to one that now had a front view, a top view, a section A-A, and a section B-B. Becoming today's secretary was now within our reach—we looked forward to receiving our first pay check.
