C From earliest times the art of beauty culture has been used for the purposes of adornment and improvement of one’s appearance. The Egyptians were one of the most important contributors to this art, and we owe many of our ideas and techniques to them. With the beginning of the second year, we entered our major course. Our spanking white shoes and yellow jackets, along with our black kits, identified us everywhere we went. Our kits, not only held the tools of our trade, but they served as good seats when our tired feet gave out. By the time the sophomore year was over, we had become specialists in shampooing and in the manicuring of ten little fingers. As juniors, we experienced many firsts: our first white uniform, our first paying customer, and our first part-time job in a beauty parlor. Chemistry was one of our most difficult subjects, but in the lab it was fun. We made cold cream, hair and scalp pomade, and liquid beauty aids. At last we were seniors! To graduate and to become fulltime operators, we had to pass the New Jersey State Board Beauty Culture examination. Our teachers drilled and drilled on the theory we had learned. We practiced and practiced one permanent after another— twelve in all—until we had the experience we needed. Now with our basic learning over, we face the future and its possibilities for advanced study in the art of hairdressing and cosmetology and the hope of managing or owning our own shop.
