ב ТНЕ 1961 АТНЕМА Published by SENIOR GLASS of THE ESSEX COUNTY VOCATIONAL and TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL 300 North Thirteenth Street, Newark, N. J. Will you join Athena аз she operates the time machine? It has stored four most precious years belonging to the Class of 1961. Our time machine recalls each year here at Essex High and relates it to a great period of advancement in history. The Golden Age of Greece was the beginning of learning and so was that Freshman Year when our interest in learning became more meaningful. Upon entering the Sophomore Year, we were guided in the selection of a course that best suited our ability. Like the reawakening during the Renaissance, our talents were brought forth to develop. With a background of textbook theory ready to be put into practice, we became Juniors. Just as the Industrial Revolution produced modern and up-to-date methods, we acquired new skills and techniques thereby becoming more proficient in our particular field. As each of these eras in history brought man closer to present-day accomplishments so had these three past years contributed to our goal—that of being a Senior and graduating. Athena’s time machine does not stop with the present, however. It also focuses on our adult students who are seeking further achievement by resuming their education just as the age of science continues to search beyond known frontiers. Now that you are ready to enter the business world, may I wish you every success and happiness. MRS. RISINGER takes a moment to say, Hello. In Appreciation to: ELIZABETH DUNHAM Guidance Counselor It is only with words that we can convey our appreciation to you, Mrs. Dunham. Your many years of untiring dedication and service to Essex High and its students will, we know, serve as a reminder of a job well done. As we take our place in the business world, may our success reflect the effort and time spent by you in guiding each of us. The Egyptians were one of the most important contributors to this art, and we owe many of our ideas and techniques to them. With the beginning of the second year, we entered our major course. Our spanking white shoes and yellow jackets, along with our black kits, identified us everywhere we went. Our kits, not only held the tools of our trade, but they served as good seats when our tired feet gave out. By the time the sophomore year was over, we had become specialists in shampooing and in the manicuring of ten little fingers. As juniors, we experienced many firsts: our first white uniform, our first paying customer, and our first part-time job in a beauty parlor. Chemistry was one of our most difficult subjects, but in the lab it was fun. We made cold cream, hair and scalp pomade, and liquid beauty aids. At last we were seniors! To graduate and to become fulltime operators, we had to pass the New Jersey State Board Beauty Culture examination. Our teachers drilled and drilled on the theory we had learned. We practiced and practiced one permanent after another— twelve in all—until we had the experience we needed. Now with our basic learning over, we face the future and its possibilities for advanced study in the art of hairdressing and cosmetology and the hope of managing or owning our own shop. It is believed by historians that the use of symbols dates back to almost 2,000 B.C. These systems of writing have become the building blocks for our present-day shorthand. We prepared ourselves as sophomores with a new fountain pen, clean steno pad, and two freshly-sharpened No. 2 pencils. These tools were used to record baffling dots, curves, and dashes based on such strange sounds as (€? ) oi, ( ) oo, and ( € ) ith. It was the beginning of a three-year period for interpreting blueprints. Before we realized it, we were juniors. We now not only had to write shorthand and read it, but were responsible for transcribing it accurately. The mimeograph, dictating machines, and the comptometer helped broaden our understanding of the duties we would be responsible for in an office. Our last year proved most rewarding. Our arms ached as we kept practicing to attain a faster speed in shorthand. Some of us developed a comma complex in transcription. Several periods were spent taking dictation in Manufacturing Processes for our Technical Procedures notebooks. Blueprint reading progressed from a simple drawing of a circle to one that now had a front view, a top view, a section A-A, and a section B-B. Becoming today's secretary was now within our reach—we looked forward to receiving our first pay check. ROOM 202 has a happy buzz when each T.S. is kept busy SSSR BUSINESS MACHINES The abacus was one of the first efficient calculating instruments ever devised. In fact, it is still being used in comparison tests for speed and accuracy with our modern-day business computers. However, today’s machines are able to handle the very complicated problems as well as the simple addition and multiplication examples in a few seconds. When we first entered Room 218 as sophomores, we stood in awe of all those comptometers. Our fingers seemed reluctant to move to the correct numbers and they were forever getting stuck between the keys. What a great relief it was to finally add a column and come out with the right answer. Bookkeeping, with its ever-growing work sheets, helped us to understand another phase of the world of figures. Having more ability, we, as juniors, were ready to solve advanced problems on the Sensimatic and the Bookkeeping machines. What a year for homework! If we didn’t have bookkeeping accounts to balance, we were analyzing cases in law, drawing charts and graphs for eco- nomics, or trying to become amateur stockbrokers. Along with our billing, computing, and typing practice, we added new office experience to our senior year—the major one, figuring payrolls. To locate that missing penny took hours of checking. It was most satisfying for us to realize that we could operate approximately ten different computers, along with the vari-typer, switchboard, dictaphone, and mimeograph. We felt proud of this accomplishment and were ready to find a position where we could demonstrate our skill. MARGARET А. ADDOTTA 158 Montclair Avenue, Newark Bookworm 1,2,3,4; Glee Club 1,2; H.R. COMMERCIAL ART Man, through necessity, was obliged to fashion tools, weapons, and clothing in order to protect himself against the elements and his enemies. But, he also had another pressing need—that of expressing his feelings. Dating back to prehistoric man, we find his crude drawings as evidence of this need. Today, the artist, with his palette and imagination, freely expresses emotions and provides visual enjoyment for all. In our Commercial Art course we find an outlet for such talent and imagination. Drawing simple geometric designs, experimenting with the color wheel, and practicing lettering techniques pave the way for artistic projects. As we become more creative and advanced in our work, we learn to sketch from live models, to do window displays, to paint beautiful stage scenery, and to create original fashions. Upon graduation, we proudly show our prospective employer a portfolio containing our best efforts and accomplishments. FOOD SERVICE There was a time in history when having food to eat meant hunting and fishing for it. What was eaten was crude and there was little concern over diet and menu. Today, the preparation and serving of food is an art. Due to the development of technology and the advancement of science, our farms produce more food and cheaper food and man appreciates the value of a balanced diet. We realize that ignorance of nutrition affects our health and progress as a people. Our Food Service course offers us many opportunities for employment in the food industry. We learn by doing. The teachers’ tea room and students’ cafeteria serve, to some extent, as our laboratories. We plan menus and cook meals for small and large groups, arrange attractive tables for teas and buffet luncheons, wait on tables, and serve as cashiers. During our classroom periods, dining room management is discussed. Selection of science kitchen equipment is studied and layouts of such equipment are planned.
