During this Freshman year, she had had an opportunity to explore those courses which were open to her: Business Machines, Technical Secretary, Beauty Culture, Commercial Art, Dressmaking, and Food Service. Once a choice was made, a sense of belonging developed. No longe Athena was Getting Acquainted with girls whose interests and abilities were the I' 3 l1CWCOI11El', same as hers. She soon realized the importance of Settling Down. Being a Junior meant con- centrating on skills and improving techniques in the shop classes. Athena was, indeed, On the Town as she entered her last year. Her plans for the Washington trip and dreams of the Queen of Hearts formal made this an unforgettable year. Athena had her portfolio containing her best work tucked firmly under her arm when she graduated from the Commercial Art course. She could be proud of the magazine layouts, the fashion designs, the brochures, and the sample lettering she had done. She had been encouraged to display her talent in the National Scholastic Maga- zine contest and the Howard Savings Bank poster contest, coming out as a winner every time. Because of her imagination and palette, our Christmas stage set, our yearbook, and our Junior Prom were always regarded as artistic accomplishments that brightened the school year. pow marie .jcuacs 917 Soutli Nineteentli Sheet, Newark Homeroom Pres. -lg Yearbook 2344: Prom Com. 2344: Safety Com. 3: Housekeeping Com. 34 -r 241198 fd gd fd5:i0 244 Bloomlielcl Avenue, Nutley 10 Homeroom Sec, 4: Bookworm 3,-lg Prom Com. 243,41 Yearbook 3.4. K. In her bookkeeping class, the debits and credits sometimes found themselves in the wrong columns and this proved to be disastrous. But keeping her goal in mind, Athena continued to strive for accuracy and skill. When she became a Junior, she discussed and solved many interesting cases in Business Law. She could always be seen at the Comptometer, with pencil in hand, asking Where does the decimal point go? Her typewriting skill became more useful when she transcribed from the Ediphone and Dictaphone machines. As the year ended, the prospect of becoming a Senior thrilled her. ln Athena's last year she com- pleted invoices on the big, big 7200. When Athena went on her first interview, she was a confident and skilled worker-an asset to the business world. Page X ,Q -f 1.' In x ,f f ,, Ml tual V 1 F i...a ,-. .,.. THE ClAN1tf, Beauty Eulfurc t .W .gf i ,' 2 .. F ,SJ f ali ,ffff Pip - - This latest equipment attracts the attention of PHYLLIS lVlE0LA, VINCENZA RISOLI, and KATHERINE DEMATTEO. Athena began her career in Beauty Culture confused and bewildered as she concentrated on basic pin curls and sets. When she worked on a model head, she found to her amazement that straight hair became bushy and vice versa. Her constant companion was her black kit, which she would be lost without. Burnt fingers from marcelling and bleeding cuticles from manicuring always left Athena with a finger in a cast. She looked quite professional as a Junior when she restyled her pony tail into a smart coiffurelwith bangs, and when she donned a white uniform and matching shoes. This was the year of many rinses, experimentation, startling hair shades, and messy henna packs. Athena could always be overheard asking, Haircut, anyone? In the Senior year, she improved others as well as herself. She learned about cosmetics and stage make-up. After struggling through cold wave practice and giving twelve permanents, she passed her State Board Examination and entered the world of her choice. 49-W 5f 't eye, . From Sophomore to Senior year, she was in a technical whirl with Blueprints, Industrial Organization, and Mathematical Equations. At first, her Gregg shorthand resembled hieroglyphics, and the simplest of blueprints perplexed her. Those forty-two typewriter keys had to be mastered, for she soon realized that accuracy was demanded of her. As Athena transcribed from her own shorthand notes, she worked with various vocabularies, pertaining to different occupations-especially in Industrial Organization and Manufacturing Processes where her notes in this class stressed the technical vocabulary of an engineer. This information was then submitted as a technical notebook. Athena discovered that her previous shorthand skills were no longer adequate. She took on the challenge of taking shorthand at a speed of I00 and faster. At the same time, she was mastering the opera- tion of several business computing machines. Athena with her acquired skills was now ready to contribute to the modern business world hoping to attain the title of Girl Friday. Athena began her career in the Sophomore year, preparing for the exciting ever-changing field of fashion. Her first stitches turned out dainty infant clothing and, then, she advanced into altering and fittings -always perfecting her skill with the needle. As a Senior, she was ready to work on customers' orders and even a bride's trousseaul Her trip to Butterick's increased her knowledge of patternmaking so that she could complete her fashioning of a historical costume, which was a Senior requirement. One of the highlights of the last year was the fashion show given in the auditorium. lt was sponsored by Simplicity Patterns and several of the Dressmaking students were models. If Athena's work in the shop classes was above average, she was taught the art of draping. This additional technique provided her with the finishing touches for a bright future. MARILYN GRESCI-ILER ARLENE MILLS ff fwwf, . af mean, 0 ,MQPIB Q fx, g www'--5 4 . izfifiiifs On the evening of Fehruary 13, our Student Council sponsored their tesfigttsnnual Queen of Hearts Dance in honor of St. Valentines day. It was a night all the students looked forward to, for it held great anticipation as no one knew who had been chosen queen out of the seven candidates. As the evening progressed and the hour of 9:30 approached, there was a change in the tempo of music, hinting that the attraction was to take place. This was a moment that the queetnb identity would he revealed. The queen's court took their places to the left and right of the throne. They made an enchanting picture in their lovely pastel gowns. Then, the queen, Emily Pilavakis came forward carrying a bouquet of red roses. At the throne, Dolores Montebello, President of Student Council, presented the crown to Emily. The queen found her escort and honored him as Icing of the evening. p Dancing resumed, pictures were taken, and plans were made for the rest of the evening. It was a successful and gala ailfair with a grateful thank you to Miss AH- mannsherger and her Sophomore Beauty Culture decorating committee. nn .. For many of the upper classmen it was to be their first formal at Essex County High. The feeling of gaiety and excitement was felt throughout A . the evening as the couples danced to the soft music.
