ATHENA Published by Senior Class of THE ESSEX COUNTY VOCATIONAL and TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL 300 NORTH THIRTEENTH STREET NEWARK, NEW JERSEY Prelude THE proteges assembled in 1952 and their overture be- gan. This was to be the beginning of a four-year sym- phony. As Freshmen, they composed a theme that would be a foundation for their future. However, adjusting to the rhythm of new surroundings was not always easy. At the beginning of the second movement, their Sopho- more year, the key to their future was chosen. This was to be the course they followed. The tempo increased. By the time they were Juniors much of the score was written. They were up-and-coming maestros. As its last crescendo, the Class of 1956 ascended the scale to graduation and the finale to its symphony was concluded. Their performance brought success — their aspirations to become reality. N GEORGE W. MORGENROTH PHILIP H. HANEY Director Assistant Director ALBERT J. CICCONE Secretary and Business Manager EDWARD J. We shall always remember the class periods you spent reminiscing with us. The Class of 1956 hopes that in many years to come you will enjoy a very rich and rewarding future. Virtuosa ELIZABETH DUNHAM Senior Guidance Counselor WE, the Class of 1956, wish to express our appreciation to you for your continual help in developing our theme in the past four years. The Celebration Queen of Hearts Dance Our seventh annual “Queen of Hearts Dance” was held on Friday, February 10, and was sponsored by the Student Council. The Valen- tine decorations in the gym were done by Mrs. Trinks’ dressmaking students. Mary Ann Sopoligo was chosen by popu- lar vote to reign as Queen. Her beauty and citizenship qualities made her eligible for this honor. She received her crown before 500 stu- dents and friends from the President of the Student Council, Louise Girgenti. Mary Ann chose as her king, Gerald Corderio. Assisting the Queen were six beautiful attendants, all of whom had been contestants in the election. A Gala Crowd 2242 4 Е è Ka ድ „© ТА The Queen's Court : na. a А Pd a de „wk The Crowning Junior Prom EACH of us anxiously watched the clock for the last forty minutes of class to tick away. Finally, the bell rang. Now that the day was over everyone could rush home, or to her favorite beauty parlor for that extra-special hair-do, and start primping for the big event. Some had butterflies in their stomachs, for it was to be our first formal dance —the Junior Prom. The magic hour of 8 o'clock drew closer and closer. At last the door bell rang and our date arrived carrying a small box. How de- lighted we were with our beautiful corsages. Our “Thank you” was expressed by our warm smiles. As we walked up the front steps of our school, we experienced a wonderful feeling difficult to explain. The gym, which the deco- rating committee had transformed into a beautiful setting called “Spring Symphony,” was a sight to be long remembered. The gowns, the music, the flowers, and the excitement will never be forgotten. Our sincere thanks to Miss Hodgins, Miss Dutton, and all the various committees for their patience and assistance in making our Junior Prom a most memorable occasion. After much careful planning by Mrs. Owens and Miss Cavallo, we finally were ready for this exciting day. We eagerly boarded the busses and before long were gazing up at the beautiful U.N. structure. The colorful flags on the front lawn, which represented the member countries, seemed to welcomć us. On our guided tour, we were fascinated with the beauty and dig- nity of the General Assembly Room, interested in the discussions held in the Economic and Social Council, and thrilled at the oppor- tunity to see the many famous people we read about in the news. Lunch in the very famous Delegates’ Dining Room appealed to us as we were the first group in our school to have this privilege. Our free moments after lunch were spent browsing through the souvenir shops and taking pictures of the landscape surrounding the build- ings. Our last visit was to the Meditation Room which in its simplic- ity inspired us to say a prayer for peace. gae 4.24% The Washington Round WEDNESDAY, May 16 Lv. Newark via Pennsylvania Railroad Ar.
