I, I, COUNCIL OFFICERS and Senior presidents meet at their weekly con- ference. SUCCESS MARKS THIRD YEAR OF COUNCIL Both a new administration and a new program were adopted by the Student Council this year. While the executive officers supplied the lead- ership, the student body gave rise to the new program. Following the precedents set by former councils, numerous mixers, dances, and rallies were sponsored. However, characteristic of its own innovations was the senior excursion. Despite all its other endeavors, the Student Council never neglected its chief duty, repre- senting the views of the students. Through the efforts of the editors, the Eagle has become a quality publication, true spokesman for the students. Con- tinuing last year's policy of lively, in- formative reporting, the Eagle is high- lighted by an action-packed serial, Man from Mars, a commentary on life in general, and the Eagle's Cage, one man's view of Essex. In- novations this year include a more attractive banner, a unique pictorial theme, a regular sports column, and the Blackboard, illustrating the fundamentals of the season's sports. From the editor's desk to the reporter in the field, the Eagle reflects the feel- ings and accomplishments of Essex- men. Responsible for its success has been the adoption of the two-band system: ex- perienced musicians assume player status, while others strive for varsity recognition. This year, besides keeping its annual ap- pointment at the Archdiocesan Holy Name Parade, the band was accorded the honor of performing in New York's St. Patrick's Day Parade. To no one's sur- prise, this has become the tend- ency nowadays among other schools with the advent of Essex Catholic as a major power in forensic competition. The Ora- tory and Debate teams, how- ever, did not let the taste of victory overwhelm them. Instead they proceeded to practice early in the season, thus foretelling a brilliant year in both the Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions. And, let it be known, Oratory and Debate, as an interscholas- tic activity has finally come of age here at Essex. DEBATOR PRACTICES delivery before other members of Society. For here the Chemistry Club members work on their projects, check accumulated data, and seek advice. The club has emerged as an active organization, striving to enrich the regular chemistry course, to provide career guidance, and to train students in the regimen of science. The club accomplishes this through field trips, movies, and guest speakers, as well as discussions and lectures each month. In addition each member must complete a proiect involving research, experimentation, and a knowledge ut the subiect. FUTURE SCIENTISTS study distillation. I - gal F ,L The Science Club, now in its fifth year at Essex, has again succeeded in promoting an interest in the sciences by training its members in scientific research and reason- ing. Audio-visual aids are used to graphically illustrate developments in such diverse fields as organic chemistry, nuclear physics, and marine biology. The club's agenda includes participation in the Arch- diocesan Science Fair. There the members apply to practical prob- lems knowledge gained through the club. The science of biology cannot be con- fined merely to the world of the lab- oratory. Because it encompasses all phases of life and growth, it must be pursued on a much broader scale. This then is the purpose ofthe Biology Club-to make the study of biology a truly comprehensive endeavor. In this eFfort, the club's members have taken numerous field trips, studying nature first-hand. Their finds were ex- hibited at local science fairs. FIELD TRIP complements textbook knowledge. tile CAINE MUT1 Y ADMIRAL GIVES COURT his opinion on mutiny. , 0 Revived after three years of suspended animation, the Drama Club was off and running to set a precedent for the future. The members attended a Broadway play and a show produced by Manhattan College. Knowledge gained from this was reflected in their dramatic interpretation of the courtroom scene, adapted from Herman Wouk's prize winning novel, Caine Mutiny. The parts of Greenwald, the defense attorney, Captain Queeg, the paranoid commander of the Caine, and Maryk, the alleged leader of the mutiny, were superbly enacted by members of the club. However, all of the work is not yet complete. For next year the goal is two productions, including a musical. PSYCHIATRIST STORMS BACK at Greenwald. GEN'I'I.EMEN OF THE JURY . . . . . . To illustrate the operation of big business, the club has visited our own Newark law courts and the New York Stock Exchange, where its members have invested in se- curities and stocks. They have been exposed to lectures on labor and banking by prominent guest speak- ers. Various committees were also organized to report on our funda- mental economic systems, includ- ing law, agriculture, and industry. But within a few minutes silence returns, and in Room 422, its head- quarters, the Chess Club begins the day's activities. Here, upon the miniature gridiron of the chess- board, mind is pitted against mind and all the rules of warfare are employed. These clashes are the prelude to monthly contests with other schools. Maintaining an un- precedented three-year undefeated streak, the Eagles captured every rnaior champion- ship in extending its skein to twenty-two maior victories. The most outstanding victory recorded this year was the Eastern Inter- scholastic Championship, the first time a team has held this enviable title for two years in a row. In addition to its undefeated string, the har- rier squad has set team records for lowest scores, and individual records for lowest course and meet times. EAD WAY TO BEST SEASON EVER Essex Catholic's wrestling team, after only tour years of varsity competition, is well on its way to becoming one of the strongest teams in the state. The Eagles grappled to a team victory in the Bloomfield High Tournament, with three Essexmen, Brian Cowley, Ray Mulligan, and Joe Thunnel winning top honors in their weight divisions. Such impressive powers as Seton Hall, Nutley, and Passaic Valley fell to the Essex matmen. In post-season tournaments, Essex lived up to expecta- tions and won the Newark District Title with six of our men capturing their weight divisions. In addition, Gary Mulligan picked up the 98 lb. Regional Championship. Next year, the team once again promises to excell with five returning lettermen reinforced by a very formidable J.V. . ef- Uniul , A llti 4 5 S04 SQ Claflr Christian Brothers Academy Ima A ABLE' 26-14 :san 20-17 19-ao 35-9 32-I4 54-0 ll-8 29523 30115 Nfl I jyjwy y may a5? q:,1w W f , r ., 1' x?fg,M,g .1 X .3 W1 In this picture sequence, we show several points during a wrestling match and describe what is actually happening in each segment. In the first picture, both wrestlers are in the referee's position ready to begin the match. The tensions of these moments before the test can be clearly seen in the faces of the boys as they await the ref's signal of wrestle. The second picture shows the Essex wrestler attempting to drive his man into the mat. His next objective will be to turn his opponent over on his back and thus be in the advantage- ous position of gaining points from near pins or even a pin, which would end the match. The third picture finds the Essex wrestler accomplishing his task-he drives his adversary on his back and will soon have him in an almost helpless position. The match is nearing its end. In the final picture, our man shakes the hand of his wearied, and now defeated, opponent. wi 94: 1 gil STATE CHAMPIONS: Kneeling: Brian Egan, Gregory Barnako. Standing: Bro.
