The collecTions of Roman and Greek glass and silver work, as well as The gold iewelry, amazed us wiTh Their delicacy, good TasTe and skillful workmanship. Just wandering around, iT again seems Tha'T an accumulaTion of seemingly insigniTicanT impressions will ulTi- maTely be responsible Tor our memories of Naples. In The crowded residenTia1l disTricTs a perpeTual Dress Ship is mainTained using everyThing Tram Table cloThs To undergarmenTs. Along The wider avenues, such as The one-way Via l3arTenope, some cars race along aT speeds ThaT would make a hardened New York Taxi driver Turn pale. Small groups of Essex personnel could be observed waiTing in despair aT busy sTreeT corners unTil a young woman or old man would raise a casual arm and saunTer across The sTreeT, looking sTraighT ahead. ln hoTel siTTing rooms lTalians waTched opera and concerTs on Television. Many from Essex envied Tellow naval personnel sTaTioned in Naples buT mosT eyes were Turned Toward QuonseT and a ChrisTmas reunion.
