Since commissioning, The proud Tigers have been an Essex squadron. ExcepT Tor The .period of TransiTion from The S-QA To The S-QD, The Tigers have sailed wiTh Essex on her deploymenTs. The squadron was commissioned wiTh The S-QA Tracker, The TirsT carrier-based aircraTT capable oT boTh search and aTTack againsT enemy submarines. ln The Eall of l96l, CDR. D.Nl. Saunders, VS-34's second Commanding Of- Ticer, landed aT NAS wiTh The TirsT QuonseT-based S-QD. A period oT TransiTion and exTensive ASW crew Training began. This new Tracker wiTh iTs complex weapon sysTem greaTly expanded The carrier-based aircraTT's role in hunTer-killer Task Torce operaTions. The squadron was wholly cornmiTTed To The S-QD in The Spring of l962. Embarking on Essex in The early Eall, The Tigers eagerly resumed Their mission oT carrier-,based all-weaTher anTi-submarine operaTions. Due To early TransiTion, VS-34 parTicipaTed in The developmenT oT new S-QD ASW TacTics. The squadron won boTh The NAVAIRLANT E Tor baTTle excellence and The'CapTain Arnold J. lsbell Trophy Tor ouTsTanding perTormance in ASW, Tor Tiscal year l96l. Commander Naval Air Eorces AT lanTic EleeT presenTed a special award To The squadron in i962 Tor l5,000 l'1OUI'5 oT accidenT-Tree aviaTion since commissioning. The Tigers played a viTal role in The Cuban QuaranTine, conducTing exTensive surface surveillance and ASW operaTions.
