Captain Thomas J. Moriarty, USN CHIEF OF STAFF Carrier Division Eighteen Bear Admiral Donald Gay, Jr., in his flagship, USS Essex, performs the dual roles of Commander Carrier Divi- sion Eighteen and Commander Anti-Submarine Warfare Carrier Group Three. Anti-Submarine Warfare Carrier Group Three is an anti-submarine warfare group of air, surface and sub-surface units directly responsible to the Commander Anti-Submarine Warfare Eorce, U.S. Atlantic Eleet. Commander Carrier Division Eighteen is the administrative title of the Commander while COMASWCARGRU Three signifies command of the highly integrated ASW task group which is centered around Essex. His mission is to plan the operations and training of ASWCABGBU Three and to direct the operations as they are carried out. l-le has a staff of T3 officers and 28 men to aid him. To do its iob the Elag must maintain its own Elag Bridge, Elag Blot, Elag Communications and, of course, Elag Office Spaces. A tour of these spaces wi ll present a scene of feverish activity as the officers and men go about their numerous tasks. The Flag Qffice is located on the O2 level. To anyone who enters, this must certainly be one of the most foreboding offices on the ship. For there, amid cigar smoke strong enough to sting the eye, are the typewriters and reproduction machines which turn out the reams of paperwork which keeps the task force awake nights. The nerve center of the Task Group is in Elag Plot and Elag Bridge. There one can view much movement as the Staff Watch and Gperations Officers direct the ships and aircraft under the supervision of the Admiral sitting in a large green leather chair on the port side of Elag Bridge. During the cruise, told in pictures on these pages, ASW Carrier Task Group Three added new laurels to an al- ready illustrious reputation. Erom the Caribbean to the North Atlantic, in the Med and Arabian Sea, the job has been done and done well, thanks to the teamuwork of carrier, aircraft and destroyers, Elag is proud to be part of the team.
