5 January... Hamburg puts on a show of real German gemiitlichkeit for the members of Task Group 83.3... an uproarious hello... a memorable goodbye On January 5, ESSEX ended a long, foggy sea detail, when the ship moored in Hamburg, in the River Elbe. To all in ESSEX and her accompanying destroyers, this German visit will always be the highlight of the cruise. Never before had a ship the size of ESSEX visited this German city . . . and never before had crowds of this size and enthusiasm visited the ship. The American embassy had indicated to the West German people that the visit of ESSEX represented the support of the peo- ple of the United States for this beleaguered country, and furthermore that many of the members of the ship's company on the visiting ships were reservists called up specifically for the Berlin crisis. Certainly this, at least in part, explains the overwhelming reception which greeted Task Group 83.3. . . a display of simple thanks- giving and real appreciation, as well as an enthusiastic manifestation of the affable and friendly German na- ture. The Hamburg citizens went out of their way. to make ESSEX and the other ships with her feel truly at home.
