ESE A , gg ROTTERDAM The Netherlands From the land of the tulip and the windmill a hearty Goede Kerst ig The two Rotterdams ESSEX and her Task Group arrived in Rotterdam on a cold, damp day, and moored in the Maas River. The crew found Rotterdam a friendly place, from ,the giant American flag waving to welcome them from the high-, est point in the city, to the pink cheeks and clear com- plexions of the Christmas shoppers in the downtown stores. Windmills and Gouda cheese . . . delft pottery and canal skaters. . .family visits.. . bicycle on bicycle . . . all these we expected, all these were found. But more, ESSEX was impressed by the modern city of Rotterdam, bright, clean and newly constructed from the rubble of the Hitler-destroyed Dutch town which was to teach Europe a lesson, at the start of hostili- ties in World War ll. The spirit of the city was rebuilt, and was as evident as the dazzlingly modern architec- ture found everywhere. Just enough of the old remained to remind us that this was Holland-although the sea- son for tulips was long past. ls this what I got extended for? 56
