While detachment personnel comprise one of the smallest units aboard, they are a most wel- come sight coming aboard in the TF-1 trader with the cargo and mail from home. VRC-40 Det. 45 has many other missions in addi- tion to bringing the mail, among them are transporting of person- nel, patients, prisoners, and high priority supplies and parts. ' VRC-40 is home based in Norfolk, Virginia where it was com- missioned on 1 July 1960. Its primary mission is the delivery of special weapons to the fleet. The VRC-40 COD's have in their short history become a well known sight to all the carriers of the Atlantic Fleet where they arrive with their various loads.

, A DETACHMENT 45 ESSEX SUNDOWNERS HU-2 has as its primary function the mission of rescue. Along with this responsibility goes any other general utility mission that can be accomplished by our one aircraft, the HUP-2, better known as the Angel. The most common is that of transfer of both mail and personnel to the smaller ships in company with Essex. The Sundowners, so called because, as the sun goes down so goes the Angel, are best known for their proficiency during man overboard. Our record this cruise: 4 for 4. . 'Our home squadron is located in Lakehurst, New Jersey and it furnishes utility helicopters for all the U.S. carriers deployed from the Atlantic coast as well as four cruisers. Utility Helicopter Squadron Two, since its formation, has accomplished its job of rescue and development of rescue techniques in a thoroughly professional manner. It has effected almost 900 rescues since its commissioning in 1949. Our warmest feelings go to the Essex, her Ship's Company and Air Group. We hope to see you again after the Yard.
