Faced with an antisubmarine patrol in the eastern At- lantic, near Germany, in a world tense and jittery over the worsening Berlin situation, ESSEX's role was clear ...to pursue her ASW job as a CVS with diligence and vigilance. To add to her punch, a detachment of A4D jet fighters was added to her usual complement of sub- marine hunter-killer aircraft, and this gave ESSEX the distinction of being the only CVAS in the fleet.
