To the crew oh the BIG NINE, it is a remembr apee at eight, lang months aboard the lzightiniest Ship in the Navy on a p eaee -time cruise. The ship has meant many things to us .... She has carried us otl: to distant lands, tar from the ones vve love. She has kept us up hall: the night on watch, then dragged us to our battle stations at dawn. She baked us in the icirerooms and llroze us on the Flight deck .... DUBOIQG assumed command ot the ESSEX on March II, 1953, relieving Captain B. B. C. LOVETT, shortly atter the big lilattop arrived in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Captain DUBORG reported to the ESSEX From the 17th Naval District at Kodiak, Alaska, where he performed duties as District Operations Ol:l:icer From July 1951, until his assignment to the ii Mighty Nine . A graduate ot l2eno, Nevada I-ligh School, the naval leader had one year at the University ol: Nevada before his appointment to the Naval Academy in 1923 where he was a member ol: the Football and crew teams. l-le graduated From Annapolis in 1927. 9 1 , Two years as a gunnery and engineering otticer on the battleship uss IDAHO preceded the newly-commissioned Ensign's assignment to Pensacola, Fla., For flight training. ENS DUBORG won his wings in February ot 1930, and three months later was promoted to Lieutenant ljunior gradel. l-le made Lieutenant in June 1932. l-lis promotion to the rank ol: Lieutenant Commander became eliliective in 191-11 and one year later he was elevated to Full Commander. At the outbreak ot World War ll, CDR DUBOIQG had control ot a patrol squadron in the South Pacific. l-le reached his present rank in 191-15. Oneiyear tours as skipper of the Samar Naval Air Base and the Sangley Point Naval Air Station, both on the Philippine Islands, preceded his assignment to the Air Warfare Division ol: the Office of the Chiet ot Naval Operations For Air in 19148. Captain DUBORG attended the National War College in Washington, D. C. in 1950 prior to assuming his Alaskan duties. ' 1 ..
