While the ship was being modernized in Bremerton, planes and men were approaching the Final stage ol: readiness at NAS, Miramar and Mol3l3ett Field. Air Task Group TWO, many ot whose members were battle-proven veterans of the Korean War, was preparing For its second consecutive Far Eastern tour aboard the ESSEX. Pilots had been training since March in air to air gunnery, rockets, bombing, close air support and tactics .... Pe-organization brought many new Faces and new aircraft. Fighter Squadron ILL3 traded their Panthers For the swept-wing Cougar. Fighter Squadron 23, at Mol:l3ett, unwrapped sleek Banshees to replace their Panthers while Fighter Squadron IZ3 sadly bid Farewell to the 1Camedil-lose- Nose Corsair and received the Panthers. Attack Squadron 55 retained the workhorse ol: carrier warfare .... the Skyraider. During the course ot the training period, VF-l23 and VA-55 won the Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet Quarterly Safety Award, the First time two squadrons had won the award in the same Air Group. LA' IQ 1iLgf Cav mu I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I X As the ESSEX slipped back into San Diego and Air Task Group TWO started its retraining, the third component ol: the team lior IQSLI-Carrier Division TI-IIQEE Stath- was still in the Ear East. Commander Carrier Division TI-IIQEE, then lQear Admiral Apollo Soucek USN, and his static were embarked on the Valley Forge, with the Admiral serving as Commander Task Force 77. In Nay IQ53, the Admiral shifted his Flag to the PRINCETON and was relieved two weeks later by Rear Admiral l2obert E. Blick, USN. With a static inherited From Admiral Soucek, Admiral Blick assumed the Fast carrier task Force command. Then the PRINCETON developed engine trouble and was ordered to drydock at Yokosuka, Japan For emergency repairs. ln port, the Admiral and his static moved to the Pl-lIl.ll3l3lNE SEA and sailed For Korean waters the next day.
