The CapTain had his TosTer son ap- poinTed To serve wiTh him as a midshipman when he was iusT one monTh over Ten years OT age. This was David G. EarraguT. The ESSEX did so much damage To BriTish shipping ThaT a TleeT was senT To capTure her. She was capTured OTT Valparaiso, Chile, and became parT oT The BriTish Navy. One oT The BriTish Whalers capTured previously by CapTain PorTer was armed and named ESSEX JUNIOR. She ToughT in The same baTTle wiTh The ESSEX and The surviving pri- soners oT boTh ships were paroled and senT To New York aboard her. ns. X ESSEX number Three was a wooden screw sTeamer builT in I876. She perTormed her peaceTime duTies well and was used as a Training ship unTil I93O when she was sold and sTriclcen Trom The Navy lisTs. .4 Second ship To bear The nam.e ESSEX was a snag boaT-a double hulled Terry wiTh a paddle wheel beTween The hulls. This boaT was converTed in l86l inTo an iron clad Union sTeamer. She had a speed oT Tive lcnoTs, a draTT oT nine TeeT, and was covered wiTh Three and a halT inches oT iron Tor armor, She mounTed one Ten inch, Three nine inch, and a number oT smaller guns, AcTive during The Civil War, aTTer iT, she was sold aT aucTion. HISTORY nr inf rssrx The presenT ESSEX was launched and commisssioned in l942. IT Toolc TwenTy monThs To build her aT an approximaTe cosT of 569,000,000 During World War Ii she earned The name oT The TighTingesT ship in The Navy. In I949 she was dry docked Tor redesigning and remodelling To enable her To handle larger and more powerTul planes. She was recommissioned in PugeT Sound Naval Shipyard, BremerTon, WashingTon, on January I5, l95l. CosT oT The remodelling was abouT 540,000,000 ATTer shalcedown and Training cruises she was ordered To Korean waTers. She arrived in The combaT zone on AugusT 2I, I95l, and deparTed Tor The STaTes on March 5, I952. This is her second Korean cruise.
