X - COUNTRY Essex had an excellent X-Country team. The constant drive, the determin- ation, and the team spirit was unending. Although the team had its share of in- juries that prevented some members from competing, it did not deter them. Captain Kay Capozzi, a Cape Ann trophy winner, and Co-Captains Jim Mc- Guiness and Jean Demeule supplied the team with the drive - that extra push- to keep striving for the best possible times. Coach Gatti, new to the team, was confident in its ability to perform well. He was a source of strength and inspira- tion to the whole team. MEN’S BASKETBALL The 1978-79 basketball season was one that will long be remembered. It will be remembered, not for the great number of victories, but for the closeness and re- spect the players developed for each other. The nucleus of the team was three Seniors, Barry Davis, Jerry Hebert, and Kevin Shumaker. These three had been through the good times as sophomores the bad times as juniors and seniors. Although many of the games were played against teams much larger in size and numbers, these three held the team to- gether. Several talented juniors, D. Germ- inara, R. Welch, J. Hobbs, and K. Mor- iarty, saw lots of action this year. Mike Ambrose, a Senior with loads of potential and no time to develop it, and Jim Mc- Guinness, a player with lots of heart, rounded out the team.
