Fy Par Uy, Y Lee, | Assistant Dean CONGRATULATIONS TO CLASS OF ’79 Each year I am asked by the Yearbook staff to write a letter to the Senior class. It is difficult to express my thoughts to each class individually, for every class contrib- utes greatly to the principles and concepts that make our institutions a unique place of learning. I am sure that your class will continue in this tradition. I hope that each of you will look back over these four years and remember them as a time of happiness. I know that the training you have received here will provide you with a firm basis for your future success. vpirector SENIORS Ror aee tenibe i : may Se “ Scott Akroyd Roger Albert David Almquist Michael Ambrose Scott Amero Brian Barry Jeff Brooks Bob Brookes Bonnie Bruce Laura Catineau David Chandler feptl j hi iil Jean Demeule Barry Davis Dave Cole Mike Demeule Dan Estabrooks Michael Fournier Clinton Fox Dana Gelin Ken Gibson John Gillen Robert Hart Paul Hayes Gerard Hebert Billy Helton | Marjorie Henshaw Deborah Hesson Donna Kent Peter Kiernan VA; i+) Steve LeBlanc Richard Malloy David Marcheterre David McDuff Jim McGuinness Julie Meagher David Nappi Doreen Natola Paul Nault Nancy Newbegin James O'Neill 11 Gregoubemny Sharon Pickering Mike Porter gil = o. With total team effort, great enthusiasm, and the superb coaching of Leo Zisis, the team ended its season with a fine record ot a wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. | The team was led and inspired by its co- captains, Kevin Shumaker, Barry | @ Davis, and John LeBrun. Offensively, B. __ Davis, J]. Hebert, and ]. LeBrun led ie _ team in building its record, while, defen- __ sively, their opponents were held offby the outstanding play of such team mem- bers as K. Noll, D.Ross. 21 EE eens . a4 2 21 X - COUNTRY Essex had an excellent X-Country team. The constant drive, the determin- ation, and the team spirit was unending. Although the team had its share of in- juries that prevented some members from competing, it did not deter them. Captain Kay Capozzi, a Cape Ann trophy winner, and Co-Captains Jim Mc- Guiness and Jean Demeule supplied the team with the drive - that extra push- to keep striving for the best possible times. Coach Gatti, new to the team, was confident in its ability to perform well. He was a source of strength and inspira- tion to the whole team. Next year's Rams face the loss of the following Seniors: D.Hesson. Jean De- meule, and Jim McGuiness. Pr. Back Row L to R: Coach Gatti,C.Rochon,J. Demeule,K.Capozzi,J. McGuinness,D. Turner,D.Hesson, Front Row: L.Cole,S.Griffin,K.Levesque,B.Moore, and D. Ver- rington MEN’S BASKETBALL The 1978-79 basketball season was one that will long be remembered. It will be remembered, not for the great number of victories, but for the closeness and re- spect the players developed for each other. The nucleus of the team was three Seniors, Barry Davis, Jerry Hebert, and Kevin Shumaker. These three had been through the good times as sophomores the bad times as juniors and seniors. Although many of the games were played against teams much larger in size and numbers, these three held the team to- gether. Several talented juniors, D. Germ- inara, R. Welch, J. Hobbs, and K. Mor- iarty, saw lots of action this year. Mike Ambrose, a Senior with loads of potential and no time to develop it, and Jim Mc- Guinness, a player with lots of heart, rounded out the team. Kneeling L to R: B. Davis, D. Germinara, K. Moriarty, M. Ambrose, D. Almquist, Standing: Coach Raucci, J. Hobbs, R. Welch, J. Herbert, K. Shumaker. 24 26 JUNIOR VARSITY Standing L to R: R. Levesque, J. LeBrun, G. Browning, C. Addario, T. Blair, si Horne, Coach Kirkorian. Kneeling: S. Griffin, S. Bryer, D. Verrington, K. Weaver, P. St. Pierre. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL On the court and off, this season's girl's basketball team was an active, dedicated, hard-working group. Three years ago Essex established its first female team. During those years it was a struggle just to stay alive against much superior opposition. This year, thanks to the coaching of Mark Gatti and his assistant, Moe Splaine, those years of defeat were finally put into the record by this year's victories. Although four wins did not put them into the finals, it does indicate a Start in the right direction - a winning season. Next year's team faces the loss of Seniors, Yvonne Wade and Doreen Natola alias ''Skinny Ginny''. , Standing L to R: Coach Gatti, D. Hurlin, H. Wilson, K. Levesque, D. Hebert, L. Ry- gielski, Y. Seniors, their dates, and members of the faculty and administration dined on The Ship's fine cuisine of lobster and filet mignon and spent the evening dancing to the music of Quitz and socializing with friends. A special thanks for this evening and for all the Senior class activities must be given to the two class advisors, Leo Zisis and Dick Barbeau. With their efforts and guidance, this year, and especially this evening, will find a special place in the memories of all the Seniors. i ee “a OG RINT 0 ON mS UO) GR APRIL 11, 1979 On the evening of April 11th, the graduates in their traditional caps and gowns of green and white, assembled in Gallant Hall in preparation for their graduation. As they marched into the Alumni Memorial Gymnasi- um for the ceremonies, their mood was jubi- lant, for they had reached the culmination of their education at Essex. The graduates were honored by having William Lenkaitis of the New England Pa- triots as their guest speaker. Kevin Shu- maker, class valedictorian, also addressed the graduates and their guests. A highlight of the ceremony was the an- nouncement and distribution of awards and scholarships by Director Potter. The finale of the evening was the awarding of diplomas by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Nicholas A. Rizzo. As the last Senior re- ceived his diploma, a resounding cheer echoed throughout the gym and caps were happily thrown into the air. 85 enn Et EN nie ELE 87 BEST WISHES TO THE CLASS OF 1979 ESSEX TECH BOOKSTORE DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION CLUBS OF AMERICA LONGVIEW FARM Compliments of M M PRINTING John Mary Newbegin CORPORATION 45 Putnam Lane, Danvers, MA A Private Boarding Facility Offering Instruction for the Horse and Rider 62 Maple Street Danvers, MA 01923 774-0564 - 774-0410 iRealeea 40107 Best of Luck to the Class of 1979 Always Remembers GERRY AL THE MINISCUS BIRD A Very Special Thanks To: Mr. Harold Kelly, Financial Advisor Mrs. Helen Lobb, Business Office Gainsboro Studios, Class Photographers All of Our Advertisers All of Our Patrons - THE YEARBOOK STAFF - GOOD LUCK CLASS OF '79 FEEDS NEEDS FOR ALL Livestock Poultry FLOWERS BY SHERMAN Dogs Cats tIGy 242 Humphrey Street PERS Mtste Swampscott, Mass.
