hide et ae Sue Setenctce eee bn pean sintegtek Lend: stnannteess - ee MIDWINTER A year indoors is a journey along a paper calender; a year in outer nature is the accomplishment of a tre- mendous ritual. To share in it, one must have knowledge of the pilgrimages of the sun, and something of that natural sense of him and feeling for him which made even the most primitive people mark the summer limits of his advance and the last December ebb of his decline. All these autumn weeks I have watched the great disk going south along the horizon of moorlands beyond the marsh, now sinking behind this sedgy hillock dappled with thin snow. We lose a great deal, I think, when we lose this sense and feeling for the sun. When all has been said, the adventure of the sun is the great natural drama by which we live, and not to have joy in it and awe of it, not to share in it, is to close a dull door on nature’s sustaining and poetic spirit. Beston Dedication To LEO FRASER Because WE REALLY LOVE HIM SA DORmME Sr Mr. Jake Ranta was much respected and revered by those of us in the senior class who come in contact with him. He was always available for information whether or not it per- tained to our major field. We soon discovered the breadth of his knowledge, and the facility he exhibited in transmitting his skills to us. His acknowledged excellence in the field of breeding his patience with us as neophytes made our intro- duction to Animal Science a pleasurable experience. It was not uncommon to hear last year’s graduates singing Mr. Ranta’s praises. If a word is necessary for description, we are in agreement that “‘nice’’ was the word for Mr. Ranta. To the members of the Class of 1972: As you approach the culmination of your education at ‘‘Essex Ag- gie’’ I hope that you will make the right choice of the road to follow in the next phase of your career development. You have completed a vocational — technical program which has enabled you to attain the purposeful goals of a secondary education and at the same time the kind and quality of operational and deci- sionmaking competencies that are basically essential in your career field. Congratulations. You will soon be separated from friends, surroundings, and activities which you have enjoyed during these last four years. May I suggest that you maintain these relationships by occasional visits to the campus to renew your association with teachers and other employees of the Institute. You can also make a serious effort to retain your personal relationships with classmate s. By so doing, you will maintain and continue your present friendships. Please remember that you belong to the ““Essex Family” and you can always rely on us for career guidance, em- ployment opportunities, or additional training. Stay with us — wecan help you. I am sure that you have had happy and profitable days here at Essex and this Yearbook will, in the days and years ahead, enable you to cherish these memories. This book is a precious treasure — keep it safe. Best wishes for the attainments of your career aims and for fulfillment in your personal life in the years ahead. Director Congratulations to the members of the graduating class of 1972. This class has established several innovations at Essex which I am sure will benefit all students in future years. The leadership to reform the student council, students on instructors standing committees, the Junior Prom being held in June, innova- tions to finance the class of 1972, and the establishment of a student rights policy are examples of the progress made by your outstanding group. ar, In these changing times, I am sure you will find that the practical education you recieved at Essex will be beneficial to you in all your endeavors. As you leave Essex and enter adult life, I wish you the best of luck and every success. [aqme FAR Raymond F. Potter Educational Manager Class of 1972: Since you started school here at Essex many scientific and technical developments have taken place. New oppertunities as well as new problems have evolved. Your challenge to this exciting future im- plies greater responsibility. In addition to the responsibilities of your career you will be faced with many civic problems, particularly in the field of ecology. May the years ahead provide for you a rewarding career. We would welcome a visit from you in the future in hopes that you may share your experiences with us. Best of luck. Tete fame Pare SOCCER Although the soccer team didn’t have an outstanding season in the win column, they were never out of the game. Due to the lack of experience and a great many injuries the team was unable to click at crucial times. Rick Boggiatto chosen to be in the Cape Ann All Stars League for the second season in a row. The team also go t an outstanding performance from Frank Gitchier, Ron Castanguay, Ken Brown, Pete.Lantagne, and others. Due to injuries Tim Dorgan had to be put in the goal and did an outstanding job as a rookie in this position. Although the team is losing many starters, the outlook is very bright for next year. Coach Wade was given some very able assistance from Bill Hulsman and William Mahoney which should show up in next years performances. A great deal of interest has been generated for the coming year by the team members. sapiens Fe AT es VARSITY BASKETBALL: L. TO R. P. Lantagne, S. Devoe, D. Devoe, R. Boggiatto, M. Oullette, W. Smith, D. Atkinson, J. Mac Lean, M. Val- liers, G. Cervinek, T. Dorgan. Playing an independant schedule once again, the Essex Rams Basketeers made themselves known as a team to be reconed with. Going into the season with sixty seven losses, the only way to go was up. After a shakey start the team continued to show improvement with each game. Finally after reaching the point of seventy two losses with- out a win the day to howl arrived. The first win was at Pentucket Regional High School by six points. From this point the team managed to win eight of the next thirteen games including a quater final win at the Bay State Tour- nament, before being elimated. The reason for the successful season has been attributed to a fine team effort throughout the season. Mark Oul- lette and Steve Devoe both ended the season with an average of 15 points a game. The rest of the team were also very consistant with key points at crucial times. Outstanding defence by Rick Boggiatt, Dan Atkinson, Ron Cas- tanguay, and Don Devoe was also a vital part of the teams success. STANDING: B. Gordinas, Coach L. Ballantine, Mgr. F. The school should be very proud of the three team members who were selected for the North Shore All Star Team. Rick Boggiatto, Steve Devoe, and Mark Oullette. Although the J. V. team didn’t win many games, Ballantine did a fine job preparing his team for future varsity games. Coach Wade doesn’t like to make predictions for the coming sea- son. If the interest is their and desire is present success will follow. STANDING: Coach Churchill, D. Wonoski, K. Commer, D. O’connell, K. Brown, D. Conners, Mer. F. Gitchier. KNEELING: S. Tinkham, G. We lost most of our starting team from last year and conse- quently fielded a very young team this season. The team was co-captained by senior Drew O’Connell and junior Gary Simpson. The season proved to be a costly one; both injury wise and record wise. By the middle of the season we had several broken bones and one severe back injury. Many players with little game experience were called upon to replace injured players and their efforts meant much to the team. This year for the first time two Most Valuable Player awards were given. One was given to Drew O’Connell who continually dis- played his great desire to win. Drew was the high scorer on the team and his offensive ability sparked the team. The other MVP went to Gary Burke who throughout the season lead the team with good heady play. Both of these players contributed all they had and their contri- butions will be remembered. Gary Simpson continued to hold up the defense and Ken Wonoski showed the most promise offensively. Next year the team will be playing in the new Cape Ann Hockey League, with games to be played at the new sports facility at Merri- mack College. The team wishes to thank all of their supporters. 10 =o, ; MOR PAA RE (5 11] FRONT: D. Rollins, G. Cervinek, B. Daigle, J. Noll, M. Spilman. BACK: Mr. Kramer, M. Morse, R. Murphy, R. Rieser, M. Bonauto, F. Reynolds. An excellent performance was given this year by sophomore Mike Bonauito. Mike arrived in prime condition this fall as a result of his partispation in the “Jog and Log” program during the summer. The jog and log program is employed to condition runners for the Sept. meets. Mike recorded four miles per day during the summer months of June, July and August. Other students have indicated their interest to start in the conditioning program during the summer of 72’. Four juniors are to be commended for their depend- able service this year. Along with Mike these people were there faithful for practice. Gordon Cerninck, Bob Daigle, John Nill and Richard Rieser. Few peo- ple knew that Richard continued to run with a severe leg injury until he was forced to stay at home because of doctors orders. Two of our freshman bolstered the team this year by placing often in the meets. The boys are Dan Barry and Fred Reynolds, are excellent prospects for next yearteam. The Competion will be more eqitable in 1072 but we need more runners. 12 YEARBOOK STAFF: LEFT TO RIGHT: Tom Lafoe, Franf Gitschier, Chris Carson, Gary Burke, Norm Gallant, Bruce Thibodeau, Debbie Sargent, Bill Smith, Mr. Fraser — Advisor, Drew O’Connell. Yearbook Editorial Staff Co-Editors Chris Carson, Norm Gallant, Debbie Sargent, and Bill Smith. 13 The measure of sucess of This yearbook pub- lication rests mainly with those closely involved in it’s production. The class of 1972 is fortunate inhaving some capable people eager and willing to contribute their time and effort unstintingly. It has been my pleasure to work with likeable, enthusiastic young people who have managed to overcome the many difficulties encountered in putting together an outstanding 1972 edition. There were a few agonizing moments but the satisfaction of a job well done for outweighed them. We hope all you who recieve a yearbook enjoy it as much as we who put it together. We all met on the plane to Missouri. Two hours later the big question was ‘‘What are you doing tonight?” 14,000 F.F.A. members asking that question! You could go to the movies, walk around town or go to the parties. The hotels were hopping as friends and strangers met from all over the U.S.A., and what a party it was. The meetings were great where all these individuals met, and joined together for one cause, Agriculture. The feeling you get by attending these meetings is hard to explain, but when it is over you are sorry to go, leaving only with your memories. 17 STUDENT COUNCIL: STANDING: Mr. Kramer, G. Picauso, M.
