Text from Pages 1 - 74 of the 1970 volume:

| The Maple published by the graduating class of I 970 of the Essex Agricultural and Technical High School We the class of 1970 have finally reached the goal towards which we have been guided for the past twelve years (or longer as the case may be). The Maple staff attempts to present pictorially “Life at Essex Aggie’, our life of study, activity, and fun. We hope that this book will bring you long lasting memories of your high school years. Fred Chase was born in Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1909. A graduate of Wentworth Institute in 1930, he was elected to the position of shop instructor at Essex in 1934. Fred is a man of outstanding character extremely well liked by both students and fellow workers. Always willing to help, he has been cited by numerous organizations for his contributions to their causes. A craftsman in wood, metal, or any field he wishes to conquer, his numerous talent are always available to the students. On July 1, 1948 Mr. Chase was elevated to the position of Shop Department Head, a position he has retained for twenty-two years. In 1960 he received the “Thor Merit Award” in Farm Mechanics for outstanding shop instruction. This year he was chosen to be a judge at the National Arc Welding Contest. Soon to retire, after thirty-six years of outstanding service to the faculty and students of Essex, Mr. Fredrick H. Chase has been chosen as the recipient of the 1970 Yearbook Dedication. To a friend and educator, we express our thanks. On behalf of: The Class of 1970 Robert Bourke Assistant Editor bo The passing of Miss Ursula E. O’Callaghan, 46, of Lynn January 13, 1970, saddened her many friends. Miss O’Callaghan had served as_ telephone operator for the past eight years, and was known to the thousands of persons who have contact with the Institute. She was exceptionally proficient in her work and the art of communications. Her contributions in these areas during the expansion of physical facilities and educational programs at the Institute were very significant. Her loss is deeply and sincerely felt by her many friends here and outside the school. To the Members of the Class of 1970: Salutations to you on the successful completion of your course in Agriculture. You now have a foundation of general and vocational competencies and it is a good beginning. Some of you will go directly into the world of work, either before or after your Military Service, and the career starts for others will be delayed for further education. Hence, we are at the parting of the ways, and it seems that this is an appropriate time to say to you that probably no previous graduating class has ever been faced with the problems now confronting you in this era of social turmoil and economic confusion. This will be a time when your morals and principles will be tested. Social values are in the process of change, and what has been considered to be right will be challenged constantly in the days ahead. As participants in this era of social evolution, I counsel you to keep open minds and let your judgment be guided by the principles and lessons learned through your experiences at home, in your community, and here at Essex. And now, some timely suggestions: Make education a continuing process by keeping up-to-date in your chosen career field. Hold fast to the friendships you have made by maintaining associations with continuing attention. And, finally, remember that this school is interested in you and your career. Keep in touch with your many friends on the staff, and join your Alumni Association, in which I hope you will become active. Director Best wishes! May 22, 1970 Congratulations to the Class of 1970 Although one of the smallest classes, in number, that Essex has produced in recent years, I am happy to extend to you my sincere regards for the future. You have been a pleasure to work with and it is my hope that you will carry your enthusiasm with you for many rewarding years. This yearbook, in itself, is an example of the work done by the class of 1970. It depicts many of the exciting experiences and attainments during the school year. [agro A Raymond F. Apple Stand 4 The success of the Senior Class of 1970 is attributed to the fine guidance of the senior class advisors, Mr. Richard Powell and Mr. Nathan Clark. It is to them that we dedicate this page. Serr Cleedd Gryllecy - 7970 Well, ten years have passed since we graduated, and it’s time for our first class reunion. Entering the schools’ parking lot, we see various old classmates, there’s Richard Bennett, who finally gave in to his pet peeve, and is test driving Chevys. There is Ed Aylward beating on Peter Bulkley’s Grand National Winning Volkswagen. By the way, Ed’s a pretty successful veterinarian. Hey, there’s Don Abbott, the ‘old alcoholic truck driver’. Paul Caron is an old buddy of his, traveling the Roadside Diner Circuit. There is Louis Tgettis and Dan Wescott. They had a landscape business, and they hired boys from the Aggie, maybe that’s why it folded. As we talk to our classmates, there really are many success stories to hear. Janice Nystrom owns a chain of florist shops all over New England. She has become pretty rich, as have Jim Stone, the supermarket tycoon, and Ray Bourgeois, the millionaire pencil maker. Bruce Pousard is in the food business too, he is a food inspector for the State of Massachusetts. He couldn’t make it to the reunion, though, he has a bad case of tomaine poisoning. Former classmate, Dave Botts, is a very successful dairy farmer in this area, as is Wendy Walker who raises and trains Quarter Horses. Dave Harvey is a very successful Men’s hair stylist and owns his own salon in Salem. A lot of stars come to Dave’s Salon, as Boston Celtics Star Bob Talbot, and Boston Bruins all-star center iceman, Steve Shepard. There is John Shachook a not so successful landscape laborer, talking to Forest Ecology teacher here at Essex, Paul Drown. Another of our classmates is a teacher here too. Would you believe Ed George is Phys. Ed. instructor? Billy (Who needs school) Thornhill showed up for the reunion and he is talking with Essex Truant Officer Donn Davis, an old friend of ours. We have a big group of Professional Foresters among our classmates. There is rugged Neil Jordan along with Dick Sumner and John Galiano. Jim Kilroy would be here, but he is still lost in the wilderness. Well, well, Steve Jacunski is a federal narcotics agent now, a little different than sweeping floors at Essex, isn’t it Steve? Beside him with their backs turned are our social degenerates, Tom Suckley and Marine Staff Sargent Alan (Destructo) Tirabassi. ABA Basketball Star Curt Dragon is talking with Bob Streck and Dave Perry, both very happy family men. Men’s Olympic Gymnast and Rope Climber Scott Manthorne, couldn’t make it because of the rough training schedule. Leon Pappas, a very successful actor, is here also. He plays the town druck for Gunsmoke, a job that suits him well. Stand up straigh t Pappas! Well anyway a fellow classmate of his can help him, Dana Pappadouplos, has been helping lots of people since he became a millionaire, although we don’t know quite how he did it. Here come a few late comers, Bob Bartlett, who is just as courteous as he has always been, he is a doorman at the Hilton in Boston. There is Bob Bourke, an airplane mechanic, probably looking for Mr. Potter to talk to. Why there is another person we all know and recognize, Tom Wood, the smelt fishing king who took over for Gadabout Gaddis. I know because I did an appearance on the Show as Sports announcer. And last but not least there is our old Yearbook Editor, Ned Holmes, who is in a line of business we thought never would take him. He is a driver for the Rowley Fire Department. Watch out for the other guy, Ned! Well it certainly was great getting to see all our old classmates, I wonder if they will be as well off by the next reunion? I can’t wait to find out. Prophetically, Dana Kallio, class of 1970 In Appreciation We, the members of the Class of 1970, consider ourselves fortunate to have had you as a teacher, advisor and friend through our high school years. You have accomplished many things during your twelve years of selfless dedica- tion. We feel certain that those graduates who have preceded us are as much in your debt as we are, not only for your untiring efforts from your desk here on campus, but also the hours spent at home and on college campuses everywhere. You have been available for inspiration at any hour, and have provided help to us both as individuals and collectively, in the realization and development of our potential. As far as such a thing is possible, you have made mathematics appear to be within our grasp, and much of what might have been drudgery has been enjoy- able. Thanks to your unceasing efforts the library has become a place in which a few minutes search can be rewarded with a great deal of information. You have always been ready to guide us in this search. Your presence at most of our school functions has been warmly noted and received. Many of us, and particularly those old graduates have you to thank for providing the guidance so necessary to getting us started on the road to academic success. Be assured Mr. Bennett, you will be missed greatly. 18 ass Will - 1970 I, Edward Aylward, do hereby leave to everyone who is now attending or will attend this school my inability to get along with Phil Pote. ry: : ; I, Richard Bennett, leave to Jim Cameron a I, Jim Stone, not being too sure what I am, case of beer and a box of cigars, and to leave to Mr. McCarthy, Batgirl, if he can Mr. Brown, I leave him with one less handle her. headache 2 I, Janice Nystrom, wish to send my I, Paul Caron, leave to Mr. Costa the gratitude to all the teachers who have remembrance of myself in his shop. taught me in the two years I have been here. 19 Class Will -1970 j I, Paul V. Tom Wood placed third as an individual. 34 Giien Obgoter During the past several months, Essex Chapter has participated in many activities. As a matter of fact, we have invented a few of our own. Our most outstanding project has been our chapter’s bookstore. This store supplies students with various paper supplies as well as school and FFA seals. It also stocks many items from the FFA catalogue. The entire stock is valued at about fifteen hundred dollars. In early December, our Horticulture judging team, which placed first in the state, traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana where it competed in the National Junior Horticulture judging contest. Our chapter president, Thomas Wood, placed third as an individual, and his team placed fourth. The senior class at the school im conjunction with the FFA Conservation and Wildlife Club sold wreaths and Christmas trees, most of which were grown at the school for the holiday. After many weeks of practice, our parliamentary procedure team competed at the Eastern District Leadership Training Conference in January, where it placed first. The Essex Chapter was host for the Training Conference, at which time a model banquet was presented by the state officers. During the last week of February, ninety-two students were awarded their greenhand degree. At the meeting in the week following, fifty students were presented with their Chapter Farmer degree. During this time, the Meat, Poultry, Lovestock, and Dairy Products judging teams competed in the state contests and brought home many top honors. On March 11, the FFA sponsored the annual school Science Fair, which resulted in many students participating in the State Science Fair. March 18 brought the annual election of new chapter officers who are President George Roaf Vice-President Sharon St.Pierre Secretary Franklin Gitschier Treasurer Roy Melnick Reporter William Fletcher Sentinel Peter Murphy Chaplain Daniel Atkinson These new officers will be installed on April 8. On March 23, Essex representatives traveled to Amherst to the fortieth annual State Convention and returned two days later receiving congratulations for their many achievements. Most cherished is our gold cup, the result of winning the Parliamentary Procedure contest. Besides this, eight Essex members were awarded the Bay State Farmer Degree, and of these, the Chapter President, Thomas Wood, was also declared Star State Farmer. Two proficiency awards were presented to Essex members: to George Roaf, the Agri-business Award, and to Thomas Wood, the Ornamental Horticulture Award. Essex FFA Chapter was well represented at the State Science Fair. Wendy Walker placed first and started the ball rolling for Essex members to take the top seven places at the Fair. One student placed ninth. 85 Essex Chapter is also well represented in the State Association, as Peter Johnson was elected State President. Also elected to state offices were Edwin Holmes, State Treasurer, and George Roaf, State Chaplain. Over two hundred seventy-five people enjoyed the annual Parent, Son and Daughter Banquet held on April 1. The catered roast beef dinner was delicious and everyone enjoyed the colorful slides presented by Leslie P. Campbell. Many sports and FFA awards were presented at this time. Essex is now preparing for the summer, and is looking forward to next year’s activities. After losing eight Varsity starters from 1968, Coach Barker anticipated a year of re- building, however, this relatively inexperienced squad quickly grasped the soccer fundamentals and changed from a defensive to offensive style of play. The offensive style was particularly exciting for it gave many of our ardent fans a great opportunity to voice their support. The team was composed primarily of sophomores, with Ron Yaeger, Bruce Wightman, and Bill Fitzgibbons contributing to the offensive attack while Frank Gitschier, Tim Dorgan, and Bill Lepore, assisted by George Roaf produced fine supporting roles. Goalie Peter Lan- tange and Paul Drown produced fine defensive roles, while Bill Fletcher surprised everyone by becoming the teams’ playmaker. Timmy Tenny played the usual aggressive game supported by Ricky Boggiatto, the teams’ Most Valuable Player. SITTING: Left to eh George Roaf, Ron Yaeger, Bruce Wen Bill Fitzgibbons, John Hodgson, and Fred Richard. KNEELING: Roland Levesque, Frank Gitschier, Richard Steeves, Ricky Boggiatto, Peter Cooper, Karl Hahn, and Paul Drown. STANDING: Coach Al Barker, Bill Hulsman, Mark Valliers, Jay Davison, Timmy Tenny, Bill Fletcher, Peter Lantange, Novell Peterson, Bill Lepore, and Manager ‘Bill Smith. Absent was Tim Dorgan. Not present for photograph: Stephen Lobb, William Hulsman, Paul Sousa, and Robert Amerault. HOCKEY 1969-1970 This season hockey was played for the first time on the varsity level since 1965. The team played a tough schedule of 20 games winning 4, tieing 2 and losing 14; with all the ties and wins coming in the last 10 games. During these last ten games the team really worked up to its potential. There were many outstanding players this year. Steve Shepard captained the team this year and was the recipient of the Cole Award as the Most Valuable Player. Gerry Brown did an outstanding job in the goal and Steve Lobb an excellent job on defense. The leading scorer was Drew O’Connell who could always be counted on for his offensive ability. Drew and Steve were elected co-captains for the next year. Next year we have all but one of our starters coming back and we are looking forward to a successful season. Thanks go to all the students, parents, and faculty member s who supported the team this year. 44 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Mr. Don Glazier Coach FRESHMAN BASKETBALL Mr. Keith Thomas Coach Essex again had a very successful season. This year for the first time an Essex runner broke the 15 minute time barrier, Bill Atkin- son a Junior in addition to lowering the g school time, had excellent finishes at each g meet. Bill was never lower than third in any meet. In the Cape Ann Open Bill was fourth, losing on a technicality. The first five places usually went to: Atkin- ? son, Lafoe, Shachook, Gomes and Zucaro. Two freshmen did especially well this year, they were Daigle and Cervinek. These two runners along with a healthy Tom Atkinson should strengthen next years team. We will lose only two seniors this year, Louie Tgettis and John Shachook. We will be working next year to improve the spirit of the team and thereby avoid this = years disaster at the Cape Ann Open. ™ From left to right: Coach Frank Kramer, Robert Daigle - Salem, Bill Armstrong - Pea- body, Mingo Gomes - Danvers, John Shachook - Peabody, Tom Lafoe - Ipswich, John Acres - Marblehead. 45 VARSITY BASKETBALL 1969 - 1970 SEASON’S RECORD 3 Wins 17 Loses Essex 53 Manchester 715 Essex 54 Masconomet 63 Essex 54 Ipswich 98 Essex 54 Hamilton-Wenham 71 Essex 54 Georgetown lah Essex 34 North Reading 71 Essex 54 Rockport 715 Essex 53 Pentucket 69 Essex 60 _—sC Bristol Aggies 49 Essex 71 Manchester 85 Essex 48 Georgetown 92 Essex 67 N.
