THE MAPLE Chill airs and wintry winds! my ear Has grown familiar with your song; Pieateitnmtheropenino yea. Ielisten, ‘and it cheers me long. Longfellow KG ee fion LOUIS J. SCANLON OF LAWRENCE was honored by friends and staff mem- bers this past month at a retirement luncheon at the Institute. He served as public relations coordinator for the past nine years and during this time he conducted guided tours of the Institute for thousands of young people. He had a genuine interest in young people, and in appreciation of his accomplishments in behalf of the student body and FFA youth organization they honored him at the annual FFA parent-son banquet in March. Mr. and Mrs. Scanlon were pre- sented a television set by master of ceremonies Dan Tunidws | re ineacan Gallant was among those who praised the admirable personal qualities of Mr. Scanlon, and extended an invitation to visit the Institute in the coming months. We the Class of '69 are proud to dedicate our yearbook to our friend Louis Scanlon, In Memoriam FRIENDS SADDENED BY DEATH OF C. F. NELSON PRATT County commissioner and trustee C. F. Nelson Pratt of Saugus died suddenly at his home on election night, Tuesday, November 5, 1968. His sudden passing brought a feeling of deep loss to all his friends. THE ABOVE PHOTO of Commissioner Pratt was taken at the dedication of the New Distributive Education Cen- ter, November 3, 1968. He served as master of ceremonies for the dedication. The dean of Essex County officials, whose public service spanned more than 50 years, had served as a trustee at the Institute for 28 years . As a trustee, he became deeply involved in school programs and activities. His growing interest in vocational education, and the Agricultural School, brought him, with former Director Harold A. Mostrom, to Washington, D.C., and together they promoted and sponsored legislation which enabled the school to carry on a strong post- World War II program in on-farm training. This was accomplished through an amendment to P.L. 346, the Veterans Training Act, filed by Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., which became known as the Lodge Amendment. He was very proud of this achievement, and continued to bring to bear his in- fluence on matters which related to the growth and advancement of vocational education in Massachusetts. It was Mr. Pratt who became the chief supporter of developments which brought about the expansion of programs and facilities at this Institute. On the Sunday preceding his death, he functioned as Master of Cere- monies at the dedication of the Distributive Education Center at the Institute. Mr. Pratt loved the Institute and devoted a substantial part of his time to participating in its affairs. He had a host of devoted friends, and was highly respected for his faithful and dedicated public service. Mr. Pratt was a native and lifelong resident of Saugus. Soon after graduation from Saugus High School he was obliged, following the death of his father, to postpone plans for further education. He entered employment in the shoe industry in Lynn, and later at General Electric, however, he never abandoned plans to obtain a higher education. Twenty years later, married and the father of four daughters, he attended night classes at the Boston University School of Law, and in 1934 at the age of 43, he attained his ambition when he was awarded a law degree. Mr. Pratt spent the greater part of his life in public service--holding office on state, county and local levels. His career began with his election to the Saugus School Committee and this was followed by service as a select- man and town moderator. He was elected to four terms in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, from Saugus, before becoming county commissioner in 1938--a post he held for 28 years. Mr. Pratt was married to the former Florence A. Shorey of East Rochester, New Hampshire in 1916. He often related stories of his courtship days and how he traveled to New Hampshire, by motorcycle, over the dirt road which is now Route 1. In 1966, many staff members at the Institute attended their 50th Anniversary celebration. In recent years, Commissioner Pratt was beset by a variety of physical ailments, including a crippling attack of arthritis. However, he rarely complained and seldom did he miss a trustee's meeting, or school function, involving the students. Mr. Pratt was a gifted public speaker and had many favorite sayings familiar to county residents. Some were Dignity, decorum and dispatch. The initials C. F. stand for 'Cold Facts', 'You probably wish I had laryn- gitis instead of arthritis. The Institute has lost a true friend whose dedication and accomplishment will long be remembered. Friends of Mr. Pratt have established a scholarship fund in his memory, at the Institute. Our sincer sympathy is extended to Mrs. Pratt and her family. It's PAUL DONOVAN, tycoon and owner of a giant floral chain, second in money only to Aristotle Onassis. There goes a Hood truck, well I guess Steve Tudal is the most successful manager they ever had, he also owns the largest yacht you ever saw, anchored in Marblehead Harbor. Close behind the Hood truck we see GARY DOYLE driving his new car which he won at the NASCAR Banquet for owning the fastest dragster. Next in line comes JOE MELLO in his gold-plated rubbish truck. I hear he hanes Triumphs off the side instead of spare tires. Moving out of the city we see GORDON SEARLES farm. His achievements with dairy farming have been hailed everywhere -- even in the Ford Almanac! Next on the country road we see CYNDI DAVIS' farm, dogs and horses running everywhere, anda yard full of mice. Behind the farmland we see a beautiful stand of trees. We can thank ANDY REYNOLDS and JOHN SZAFRANSKI for keeping this part of America beautiful. BRUCE HAMSON'S work of art for the FRANK D'AMATO Landscaping company has drawn attention from all over the world. His parks are works of art. Riding through the park is DENISE DUNBAR on her mare, taking a day off from work at the Animal Hospital. Elsewhere on the walking path we see SHELLEY WALKER taking a champion poodle for a stroll. She has won many international championships with her stock. Heading back towards the city we see the JAMES GATES and THOMAS ROSS farms. I hear they are famous and quite well-to-do. JOE CROTEAU has a rich piece of land and now grows most of the vegetables for the Campbell Soup Company. Just of the outskirts of the city we have pulled up to a milk plant. Just inside we see BOB WOOD busily mixing ice cream. He has gained twenty pounds in a month eating the products. The testing lab is headed by JANE ARATHUZIK. She's really protecting public health! Back on the crowded city streets we caught RICHARD DALLAIRE catching all the pigeons on the street in front of JOHN MATTHESON'S expert auto shop. Turning on the radio we hear BRIAN SAYER giving the news in the languages for each different group of the city. The order of the day is the big soccer game starring cap- tain CHUCK GAGNON , and team members JOE FOSS, ROSS GADDED Ean BIRCH, among others. Also rounding out the sports card is the big basketball game of the day with captain BOB CARPENTER and manager DAN FITZGERALD. The city ski team was reported to be trying out for the Olympics. On the team PAUL LANDRY, who is the famous captain. Lunchtime finds us eating in the city restaurant. We know all the meats are fresh and wholesome, checked by FRED HOOPER, state inspector. The TV in the restaurant is 38 showing re-runs of Laugh-In , We know the show is popular because our own Uncle BRUCE BEEMA N is now the head writer. The men's shop down the street is owned by WARREN HAAS carrying the absolute latest in men's fashions. GEORGE POMAKIS is head of the Greek Pastry at the deli- catessen a most successful salesman, too. NORMAN BOSSE, BILL HEALEY, and GRETCHEN CARLEY, each manage a Donovan Florist Shop. They do the most beautiful designs you ever saw. LARRY DOYLE owns the greenhouse supply company. Democratic mayor PETER JOHNSON, has on his staff many class members. WAYNE ROSA is head consultant of agricultural methods throughout the whole state. RIC SHANAHAN the research head of the state for all products. JIM McBREARTY is on the committee to investigate the car manufacturers. Wonder Why? CHARLEY KELLY is on the committee for more comfortable park benches. The sportsman show has opened at the municipal auditorium. We spot BETTY ANKE- TELL selling water skis in her teeny-weeny polka dot bikini, sales are booming. PAUL LeBLANC is taking pictures of the wolves with Miss Sportsman Show. He de- velops them back at his photo store. HOHN LUNDSTROM is the head salesman for the Remington company. He's still arguing about that certain Physics problem. BRUCE GARON keeps visiting the sportsman Show guess he still has eyes for B. A. he's bought four sets of water skis already. Wemieariiiek TENNEY is still beating up ex-Marines. STEVE DODGE joined the Marines, now we know why he keeps re-inlisting. The RICHARD WRIGHT potato Chip factory is just about beating all the competition. JIM FLYNN, international playboy, owns the winning yacht in the American cup race. TOM MONKS keeps trying to get the engine running in his entry. Last time we knew, he was between Block Island and Nassau. JOHN MAZZONE went to Australia with BURT BLAISDELL, they don't walk any more, they hop! In the winter, FRED MORRILL is still selling Christmas trees at the Aggie. Poor ALAN WADE tries to surf an endless summer on the Merrimac River. The roar of a jet is overhead. It is none other than EARL BURNS who pilots all the round-the-world flights. As we look back to the moon, we hope you have enjoyed our visit to the good old earth, we certainly have. Editored By Cyndi Davis ASSL. Eilon: 39 Underclassmen Juniors 5) : 40 Sports CHEERLEADERS C.
