ABOVE LEFT: Even during the lirst week of school, spirit ran high for the football game between Escondido and Orange Glen. FAR LEFT: Steve Schmidt, varsity football captain, leads his team into the first pap rally as the cheerleaders introduce the mighty Cou- gars. ABOVE: After three months of vacationing, students find it hard to study. LEFT: Debi Smith takes time out between classes to enjoy an lce cream bar. The freshness and excitement of the first week of school was highlighted by the Cougars' opening foot- ball game against Poway. The game was preceded by the encouraging cheers from the student body at the first pep rally of the year. Both varsity and junior var- sity cheerleaders stirred the Cougar fans with spirit as the football team was introduced. A new system of assigning classes by computers almost seemed to reduce students to a number. John Doe, enrolled in English lll, became MO131B04915 en- rolled in F10615. However, after the first week of school, both students and teachers adjusted to the new system and EHS operated efficiently with the added help of data processing. Student Life 21

Team Finds Way To CIF With Student Support All the qualities of a school determined to be the best in sports was brought out as the Cougars earned a place in the CIF playoffs. The students were eager, the cheerlead- ers were excited, the coaches were anxious and the team was ready to obtain victory. Throughout the entire season the student body displayed different forms of spirit. Clubs on campus raised spirit by selling articles such as pillows, pennants, and booster pins. Morning and afternoon pep rallies, spirit breakfasts, activities at lunch, all expressed student participation and enthusiasm. When it became a reality that the Cougars had won the Avocado League title and a definite berth in CIF, the students prepared for the extended season. RIGHT: In order to promote school spirit, the Flag Corps sold orange and black pillows to use at the game. FAR RIGHT: The EHS spirit bu99Y, driven by Paul Barefoot, always carried the varsity cheerleaders onto the football field before games.
