Smoothing the way Dear Students, This year's graduating class has the honor of leading off the l96O's. The senior students have achieved their education during a decade filled with turmoil which in- cluded, among other things, hot and cold wars and the entrance of the space age. As we look forward to the new decade, we have every reason to believe that our young men and women will strive to im prove themselves and that they will take advantage of the many opportunities afforded them-opportunities which are still very much in abundance at every turn. Quite often it seems that young people have the mistaken idea that everything worthwhile has either been accomplished or dis- covered. The years ahead will open many new horizons for those who have the vision and the courage to push ahead and to give a full measure of effort. ln conclusion, I would like to commend the students of E. U. H. S. for their many ac- complishments during the T959-60 school year. The record gives further evidence to iustify our faith in you. Sincerely, Guilford W. Quade District Superintendent 1 ... Dear Students: For the past five years as principal of E.U.H.S., I have felt it indeed an honor to be associated with teachers and students who have demonstrated their loyalty and upheld the high ideals of a school that is well known for its achievements in all areas of education. This year for the first time-and appar- ently the last-we have been one group on one campus for one full year. During this period we have observed the high standards set by those who preceded us. We have strengthened these to the point that they will be evident in the new schools once our group is divided and begins setting stan- dards in new situations. Your continued efforts in taking advantage of all educational opportunities are invaluable. Much of our favorable recognition is due to the performance and achievement of our seniors. It is our responsibility to continue the school spirit they have inspired. Seniors, in gratitude for your contributions, we wish you continued success and will enter with great pride your name to the E.U.H.S. alumni roll. Sincerely, W. P. Sidney Baker, Ted Faucher lkneelingl, Clark Johnson, Don Lawson, and Gerry Ensley received college credits along with a head start on their college career. By achieving a high rating on an examination covering the United Nations and having exceptional personal qualifications, Judy Toyias last summer was honored by the Oddfellow and Rebecca Lodges with a trip east. The trip included a tour of the East and a week in New York City at a United Nations Youth convention. A well-known figure around campus, Don Prough demon- strated his superior public speaking abilities in local compe- tition. Having won first place in the Toastmasters contest in Escondido, he went on to capture second place honors in district competition at Camp Pendleton. Selected to represent Escondido at Girls' State this year was Vicki Greenough, while Steve Thurlow and George Lott- ritz were chosen for Boys' State. Besides having a wonderful time, the three learned many new and interesting things con- cerning Student Government. Because of the fantastic changes which have happened to E.U.H.S. in the last ten years-the move from City Campus and the loss of those lovely tents-and because of the many changes which are anticipated in the future-the building of at least three new high schools and the result- ing division of E.U.H.S.-your Gong staff has called this last year our GOLDEN ERA. lt has been a year of transition, for we have left the old behind and are heading toward the new. We sincerely hope you will find the excitement in our GOLDEN ERA that we have found. Before we put the finishing touches on the GONG, l want to take this opportunity to thank some of the many wonderful people who worked so hard behind the scenes to make your Gong possible: Mr. Jim Neyenesch, who had the tre- mendous iob of printing the annual, Mr. Jack Cannicott from Los Angeles Engraving, who so willingly helped us with layouts and many other numerous problems, Mr. Daly and Mr. Tutwiler, who did such a fine iob with our pictures, the terrific kids on the staff who slaved over write- ups and searched for lost negatives, and finally Mr. Frank Devine, our adviser, who spent count- less Saturdays and afternoons after school work- ing out all the many details that make a year- book so complicated. We hope we have succeeded in bringing back some of the memories of this past year, and that you will remember i960 as a truly GOLDEN ERA.
