One of their biggest accomplishments this year is the fine building which will be school board has also classrooms. Two of wh occupied by the music department. The talcen steps for the provision of four new ich are to be built in the near future. Two shiny new busses were added towards our school's trans- portation system. The students gratefully ap school board. The veterans' pro need for these busses was great and the preciated this action on the part of the gram, which was financed by the govern- ment, was actively carried on throughout the year. The adult education classes were again conducted with the support of the Trustees. Fine opportunities were offered in courses such as ceramics, rug-malcing, foreign languages and Woodcraft-these being but a few of the numerous subjects rendered. We are sure that the Trustees for their all of the students at EUl-lS wish to thank fine co-operation and achievements. Mr. Judson 49'ERS AND YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS: One hundred years ago, a group ot pioneering men and women lsparlced by the discovery ot gold at Sutter's Milll raced into this land ot opportunity. They braved the elements and dared tate to gain the advantages ot this tair land. While you are experiencing the thrill ot teen-age living and enjoying the heritage ot this great nation-its treecloms-its schools-its wealth-its constitutional government-its almost inexhaustible natural resources . . . Remember-you are about to become one ot the main actors in this drama ot lite and that the stage is now set with an air frontier and an atomic horizon. Prepare yourselves as best you can, while you can. Pioneers ot the atomic age may live to smile at the dangers taced by the l849'ers. You can and must help to turn the dangers ot this atomic age into benetits tor all mankind. You may participate in the new age ot exploration as man ventures out into the solar system. You tace greater danger and greater opportunity-by many told-than did the l849'ers. We will do our best to help you enter this great adventure and attain an excellent record tor the l949'ers. A. P. Corrine and Mrs, Pritchett spent a busy year keeping a multitude ot records, including the mystery ot the school tinances. It was the stu- dent council, composed ot students elected trom their first period classes. The stu- dent council gave many more students the opportunity ot entering into the malcing ot our school laws. Dick Leivers was elected to govern us for the '48-'49 year. l-le and Mr. McLoney, the advisor, spent the year ' puzzling over the responsibili- ties and problems which con- fronted the cabinet and the student body. Instead of entering into the actual making of the school laws Mr. Mcl.oney guided and advised the A.S.B. offi- cers. Dick, Mr. Mctoney, and the student body have done a good job and they all en- joyed working together. SNOW IN ESCONDIDO and a centennial celebration in California! Yes, a lot of things have happened to make their year seem different from all of our other years. Our ASB officers sponsored many activities for all of us. There was a mobile unit shown to us in a special assembly honoring the Gold Rush days in early California. Throughout the year we had charity campaigns to raise money for the March of Dimes, Red Cross, and the Community Chest. Our new school song was sung during an assembly for the first time this year, too. Are we proud of it? Just ask us! Throughout the entire year visiting dignitaries were entertained, and every now and then o-ur campus was enlivened by some very special dances sponsored by various organizations. This has been a year full of entertainment, interest, and appeal for all of us. a Koa X K . This hard-strilcing, never-say-die team battled the fog as well as players in one game. They tell us we lost that game but we're still wondering because no one really saw what happened. The team gave us more thrills in the Cceanside tray. Escondido came trom behind a two touchdoown lead to down the Pirates, I3-I2. We have another group ot boys that play with an equal amount ot sportsmanship and slcill. They provide just as many thrills and spills. One of the battle cries of the day was C'mon, Bruciel While we gave every school a good run for its money. we did not garner too many varsity team victories. Our Bees and par- ticularly our Cees fared much better: in our League finals we had winners in Goswiclc in the hurdles and broadjump, Perez in the l92O, and Cortez in the polevault. The usual piece de resistance usually came when we noticed the loolc of pain or anxiety which would come upon our com- petitors' faces when Mr. Fox or Mr. Ahler would attempt to explain the intricate de- tails involved in the measuring of each race. M5 rxrx E They Zed Our nfrtrt This year the Junior Class chose as their leaders tour well-deserving students, Lee Gilbert as President: Delson Watkins, Vice- President: Merrilyn Thompson, Secretary, and Mary Ann Gomez, Treasurer. Our sin- cere thanks to every one ot you. C' aww Thru '49. A group of students, although few in number but mighty in power, were our class officers. At the beginning of the year each class chose those whom they thought capable of handling the class affairs. Their respon- sibilities ranged from ordering class rings to arranging dances. Qften little credit is given this group of students, but we have them to thanlc for planning our various activities. The advisors for our classes were Miss Briedstein, Mr. Fox, Mr. Ahler, and Mr. Christianson. x ,X 1: O, Q? fl' F , I .L ii The office of Frosh Prepay was held by Dean Stewart this year. Ralph Ortiz, assisted by Dean as Vice-President, while Cynthia Leivers and Carol Johnson held the respective offices of Secretary and Treasurer. The Sophomore Class chose as their officers this year: Ollie Jo Astleford, President, Tommy Escher, Vice-President, Mary Lou Lerma, Secretary, and Virginia Goswiclc, Treasurer. These students did a good job in fulfilling their offices. ' S Led by President Lee Gilbert, his cabinet, and class advisor Jim Ahler, we experienced a successtul year. Among our successes was the unforgettable assembly-our Gay Ninetiesu variety show. We won tirst prize tor our snappy float, which we entered in the Homecoming parade. And our class could always be counted upon to support the dances that were given, tor our school spirit filled us with a desire to participate in anything and almost everything. The male population ot the Junior Class was seen at every game that was played. On the tield, courts, tloor or on the bleachers they made a good showing and their slcill at sports gives all ot us a good torecast tor the sports record next year. Our girls weren't slaclcers either. We were always one ot the larger groups who went out tor sports and we could even beat the Seniors, which we lilced to brag about. But just wait till you see us next year-yc u better watch outl 'MQ . H ,wwf M .,, A Amy rm 'ff2: 'f.r-P ,M as-.Q QL N ,igiaafwigvwzl .. af' as i at l!5ll 'i! Brown, Brinsmade, Barrett, Billick, Breylinger, Baldwin, Brttleston, Bull. l Knees knocking together-a shaky sensation in the stomach-minds filled with weekness-that's what our little Frethmen were made of when they first climbed our High School l-lill. For the sugar and spice and everything nice, usually known as tlwe Freshmen Females, there was that week in which they were at the mercy of the Senior Girls. The eniors thought up the exquisite, enjoyable torture f making ,a girl who thinks herself a queen, go around for an entire week resembling a Lady Scarecrow more than anything else. For the rustyl nails and puppy dog tails, the other half of the Frosh class, there was that annual trip to the old 'Fl' with mighty bags of limestone on their shrinking slhoulders while the upperclassmen urged them gentlyq on from behind. The first days of our freshman life didn't run very smoothly. The poor Frosh were unbelievably susceptible to the practical jokes of their Senior brothers. l Yes, the Freshmen were rather busy their first few weeks at scho l. But they gradually got into the swing of things. They joined our teams, filled our balcony to overflowing during our .assemblies and added new life, spice, vim and vigor to- all of our activities. l l A : l x., mx x f- Wh-In R P 3. With the help of their ad- viser, Miss Brand, they have tried to conduct their meetings in Spanish. Their first meeting was spent initiating the new members. The boys had to wear Serapes and the girls wore peasant skirts and blouses with flowers in their hair. During this day the initiates had to speak to their fellow Spaniards in Espanol. The officers of this organization were: President, Myrtle Fay Boclcus: Secretary, Barbara i-lavinsg Vice-President, Geneva Ramirez: and Treasurer, Martha Esparza. They have handled their jobs very capably and helped to do their share in preparing for the meetings. The Christmas Concert, Spring Concert and Graduation Exercises were highlights ot its successful season. At the beginning ot the year we saw our Glee Club members proudly displaying new white sweat- ers with blue music emblems. The majority ot the credit must be given to the director, Mr. Christianson. Under his slcilltul direction, untrained voices have become a chorus ot melodious harmony. The Glee Club is especially gitted this year. It was able to otter many fine soloists and variations in small and larger groups. One glance into the music room reveals that the girls are not only benefitting educationally, but are realizing keen enjoyment in this class. We'll be listening tor you next year. . Opening night-not on a stage but at the first football game of the season our band got off to a good start. We were extremely proud of them in their neat uniforms doing tricky formations as they stole the spotlight momentarily from the players. The radio band has finished their second year of successful entertaining. They have often stolen the show with their program of popular and classical songs. Acquiring awards at the annual festival is a common accomplishment for this talented group. Members of the band are literally burdened with medals for their excellent playing. This year the festival was held in Coronado where the E.U.l-l.S. band put on a wonderful show. Of course, the annual Christmas program and the Spring Concert were highlights of the whole season, which everyone attended. On Fridays we either scrambled into our jalopies and tore oft to support our team at a rival school, or cheered them on at our Cougar lair. All sports had a share in our enthusiasm. Whether it was football, baseball, basketball, tennis, or track, we were always there to root for our boys. Our cheer and song leaders were the integral core ot our school spirit. Connie, Dolores, Madgie, and Marybelle as cheer leaders and Darlene, Lois, and Gerry as song leaders--all worked as hard as the fellows on the tield. Win, lose, or draw, we always kept our spirit.
