We do not lcnow when the tirst round trip was started, but we do lcnow there was a be- ginning. Founded in I894, Escondido High School had ridden out titty ot those round trips at the close ot the school year, IQ43-44. Approximately tive thousand students, two thousand ot whom are graduates, rode gaily along while in attendance at the high school. Thirty-eight school trustees and one hundred sixty-seven teachers served the school in that titty-year merry-go-round period ot time. A beginning is as important as an ending. The launching 'ot a ship is attended with much Pomp and Circumstancef' The Nation celebrates each return ot Independence Day. The entrance ot a student into high school has as much signiticance as the gradu- ation. The founding ot an educational institution is a good measure ot the interest the adults ot a community have in the training ot their young people, and each return ot the beginning day should receive recognition. This issue ot the Gong commemorates the tittieth anniversary ot the tounding ot Escondido l-ligh School. The importance and signiticance ot this day should not go unnoticed . . .Around the sun we go until THE DAY comes again. With the Heard ef Trustees Woodnutt Joe W Matherly Letp to right: Paul R. Squealcl Crashl Thus began another year ot musical history in the E.U.l-l.S. bandroom, and appropriately so too, tor to outsiders squeaks, crashes, and similar unearthly noises seem to be the order ot the day every day around there. Yet from amidst the ruin ot brolcen drum heads, crack- ed reeds, and lost music, the musical geni- uses produced music titted to every occas- ion, from Our Sturdy Cougar Bold played in the rain at Oceanside to the Solemn Pomp and Circumstanceu at graduation. At the tamous Tuesday night rehearsals, punctuated by President Edgar Poe talling ott risers and Secretary Anna Deggelman searching madly tor misplaced clarinet music while Maestro Christianson vainly tried to maintain order, a concert was prepared which completely iustitied our pride in the E.U.l-l.S. band. The Cougars started ott their season with a 34-O win over Brown Military Academy. For their next opponent they traveled to Coronado to talce on the highly tavored Islander outtit, driving to a slashing 2l-O victory. Atter polishing ott San Dieguito and San Diego Army and Navy Academy by large scores, Escondido's Cougars allowed the Ramona Bulldogs to be- come the tirst team to score on them, but their six points were outweighed by a home team score ot 50. Vista, which was next on the list, gave the Cougars their tirst real scare. At halt-time the Vista Panthers were leading I9-6, but the Cougars came baclc tighting, and, with three touchdowns in the second halt, won the game, 26-IQ. l-laying their traditional rivals, the Oceanside Pirates, lett in league play, the Cougars again drove to a 6-O win to capture the loop championship. Then, with everything to win and nothing to lose, the Cougars met San Diego l-ligh tor the County Championship. There, outweighed and playing with tewer reserves, Escondido l-ligh was deteated 20-O. This year Captain Bob Embrey, who, by his outstanding leadership and ability, led the Cougars, was placed on the mythical All-Southern Calitornia second team as quar- terbaclc by l-lelm's Athletic Foundation. Rolyn Weaver was voted the team's most valu- able player, and De Lisle Calac, who was also honored by l'lelm's, was elected next year's captain. 1 r r ' ff,-'K I, T 1' 'fvgff M ' ' 'rf f ' .N f , M am M1152 1211 A 7 V I gf, f, x , 'Q cf, . 4 - i y A VV ,V . .V s J , fn ,f g 'J ,f . ji 0 ta, 0 ,ij ' 1' 4 ' ' 0 72 I ' ' is A 06 f -,f-ff 1' f yf V' f.., ,f V - ef l'i'v, H I Yrdff f f, ' -AH., 'f AJ.
