At the turn of the lane, Looking' buck o'er the blazoned trail Stands the grand old class of 'twenty-five: And, as the mists unveil Above us, in green and silver streaming, Brightly our motto, Service, is gleaming. Service! And what class has ever been More loyal to Esky High? Througih sincerity, honor, and steadfast toil We have raised the victory cryg And now. as We enter untrodden ways. VVe proudly sing of our high school days. Ruth CLASS COLORS---Green and Silver CLASS FLOWER---I.ily-of-the-ValIcy Service Snndhom SENIOR MEMORIES In the drama, Esky High, the Class of '25 has played a leading role, starring, not only in social productions, but in athletics, scholar- ship and forensic work as well. Our first appearance on the screen---in the 1921-22 reel-was pre- ceded by our splendid reputation which was upborn by our scholastic 1'ecord, our charming masquerade, and our cafeteria, the first held in the school. Dubbed Progressive '25 , we took a leading part in the 1922-23 reel. Our gay matinees, sleighride, picnic, delightful evening party, and Coney Island are never-to-be-forgotten events. We won the declamatory contest that year, too, and the interclass basketball championship. In the 1923-24 reel, we again scored a l1it by successfully present- ing the first Junior Play, A Tailor-Made Man. Most of the proceeds we donated to the proposed athletic field, thus setting an example of Service to the other classes. Our girls' basketball team won the in- terclass championship, we led in scholarship, and our Junior Prom was not only the merriest event of its kind, but was decidedly different. Never in the history of moviedom had a class starred as we did in the 1924-25 reel. Again, with Service as our motto, we set out to do our bit. We took a leading part in the annual carnival and our Senior Ball was the outstanding social event of the year. Ours was a double victory when we won both the girls' and boys' interclass basketball championships. We were well represented in basket- ball, football, and track. Both tl1e school orator and the entrant in the Constitution oratorical contest were from our ranks. We had four representatives on the de- bating teams. Our class set a new scholarship record, far superior to any previous one. In presenting our class play, The Thirteenth Chair, a production filled with fun, excitement, and mystery, we Won the praise of all. Then came our picnic, banquet, class day exercises and commence- ment, events which will linger in Senior hearts as we enter life's real drama with Service as our pledge. -R. S. CLASS COLORS---Blue and Gold CLASS FLOWER---Sweet Pea Co-operation THE CLASS' OF 1926 lA picture of thrills, excitement and accomplishment! Directed by Mr. Swanson and Miss Meyer. Cast of characters--130 live-wire students of E. H. S. Place---E. H. S. Time---1925 INTRODUCTORY In order to understand thoroughly what we are presenting herein it is neces- sary to have a knowledge of the historical setting which forms the background of our accomplishments. Accordingly, we are presenting a brief record of the past achievements of the Class of 1926. To begin at the very first, we must go back to the year 1922 when we first entered Esky High. We will admit that as Freshmen, we were a green bunch, but certainly we were not too green. Seniors laughed atour mistakes just as Seniors had 'done years before. But our newness soon wore off and we started to work in earnest. One of the first signs of ability was the Freshmen matinee party given that year. It was a whirlwind of a success. And surely no one can ever forget the Freshmen masquerade given on the eve of St. Valentine's Day. Nor will anyone say that our candy sales were without taste. That year we joined in all forms of activity. One of our number placed second in declamation, while another won an E as a member of the track team. Our second year marked another of progress. Adopting the motto, Co-opera- tion we thrust ourselves into the centre of school activity. A member of our class won the carnival ticket-selling contest.. Our afternoon dances were a delight to all. The Sophomore Ball made one evening almost perfect. Three of our scholars placed on the debating team. Another won the declamatory contest. Three stal- warts from '26 captu1'ed the coveted E , placing in each form of athletics. And is it possible to forget our sleighride? Well, hardly. Yes, it was a year of accom- plishment. Then came the best part of our High School career. What delightful months have been the past few. Again one from our number carried off the honors in the carnival ticket-selling contest. After-school parties, as '26 carried them out, were looked forward to. We tried, for the first time, our ability on the stage, and the Junior play, Stop Thief , was p1'onounced a success. In athletics, Juniors were much in evidence. Four Juniors placed on the debating team. Our class basketball team, though defeated, gave the Seniors a close race. Then came that ne'er-to-be- forgotten night of the Junior Prom. It is with nothing short cf pure ecstasy that we look back upon that most delightful of evenings. And in truth, we cannot help feeling a little touch of pride as we review the events of the past year. It is with the most humble form of modesty that we announce cur belief that our motto, Co-operation , was not chosen in vain. ' This record furnishes the historical setting upon which this play is based. We offer this as an explanation for all phases of Junior life which may occur in the ffl- lowing pages. -W, E, '25- Activity is man's natural estate 5 YU Qfiswnznocn DCUDZIBOCD Some folks are so important they can't enjoy Z1 funeral unless they are riding in the first carriage The only sure way to destroy C ZDEDDZDOUNT3 ZDEDDZDOUJIU WHAT JUNIOR STARS ARE DOING EDWARD BUCK CURRAN Versatile Mr. Curran is now in Africa performing splendiferously in juvenile parts. The game was fast and both teams showed good form for the opening tilt. The second game was with Manistique, when the Orange and Black defeated the Schoolcrafters, 21 to 7. The Green and White squad had much difficulty in breaking through our defense, and two of their baskets came from long shots. The locals lost their first game to Negaunee, 27 to 17. Esky lead at the end of the first quarter 9 to 0, but Negaunee got going and overcame the lead of our basketeers in the last half. Escanaba succeeded in holding lltecht, the Menominee flash, in check. but lost the game on fouls. The Thompsonites made more field baskets than the Stateliners, but the latter made the fouls good. Gladstone won a hard-fought game from Escanaba, the Orange and Black failing to make one field goal. The game was exceedingly rough. Only two field baskets were made during the wholegame. Escanaba put a crimp in Marquette's hope of a successful invasion of Delta County by beating them, 20 to 13. The Orange and Black finally overcame their losing streak. St. JOS0llll'S was defeated without much difficulty, 26 to 9 in a very slow game. The parochials put up a good defense but could not hit the basket. For the first time since athletic relations had been resumed with the Soo, the Lock City crew won, beating- Escanaba 23 to 21. The Hill- toppers lead all through the game but lost in the last minutes of play. The best game of the season was played when Menominee defeated Escanaba, 14 to 13. The teams kept the crowd on its feet all of the time. A fine sportsmanlike attitude prevailed among the rooters of both towns. The Hilltonpers defeated Manistique for the second time this sea- son, 13 to 9, the locals winning with ease. Revenge was sweet when Escanaba defeated Gladstone in a clean, fast game, 21 to 10. A luxury is something the neighbors have that we can't afford D OCD J W 15213007 THE MENOMINEE GAME The grandstands were packed that historical day, And the cool breeze of Autumn swept in from the bay. All yelling and shouting and many a song For the Esky players arose from the throng. Then the teams trotted out, and 'midst wild acclaim, The referee issued decrees for the game. Together they swept, and loudly we yelled, Instilled them with spirit and scoreless they held Menomineel The second half started, our team said, We can! How they fought, how they struggled, then our quarter-back ran The length of the field for the only score. The grandstands went wild and when it was o'er They tensely awaited the end of the game. And they all gave a gasp when our punter Went lame, For they thought that our kicker would have to be benchcd, But the lad was all right that punted against Mcnominee! The last quarter dragged and we prayed for the end, But our coach knew his stuff and he knew they'd defend Our goal from the Reds till the last whistle blew, And that they sure did, in great style they came through. Our team was resistless, our warriors in black, In the last endless minutes, our goal right in back, Held the Red team for downs, 'til the time-keeper's gun Set the crowd in an uproar. Your jinx is now done, Menominee! 'Twas a treat to behold that Menominee game, Each team battled grimly to uphold its fame. But the Orange and Black battled hardest and best, Their plays went like clock-work and fight did the rest. The line hit them hard and the baekfield ran low, They gave us their all when they vanquished that foe. For many long years we accepted defeat, But our old Esky pep has returned, and we beat Menominee! ! ! --F. Never count your chickens till they cross the road S. P. From those participating, Dorothy Garrity '25, was chosen to represent Esky High in oratory and Ethel Gessner '27, in declamation. This is the first time that Escanaba High School has had two girls as representatives in this field. The district oratorical and dcclamatory contests were held at Crystal Falls on the evening of April 3. Dorothy Garrity then delivered her appealing oration, Mother Machree , winning second place. Although she won three out of six possible firsts, the percentage system placed her second. Ethel Gessner, with her declamation, Apostles of Peace, won third place. Both girls were very effective in their speaking and deserve credit for their fine showing. Robert Gessner '25, represented Escanaba in the national Constitu- tion Oratorical Contest, held under the auspices of the Detroit News. He won first place in both the district and Upper Peninsula contests, and won seventh place in the state meet, which was very closely contested. His oration was entitled Alexander Hamilton and the Constitution. Too much credit cannot be given to Mr. Lenimer, who so efficiently coached these representatives. All indications show that Esky will have many apt entries in these contests next year. May they be successful! Don't be so narrow-minded that your ears rub DEDDZDOCD Q ll N X! ZDEDDZDOCDP7 AFFIRMATIVE TEAM The keen interest shown in debating this year resulted in nn- other triumph for Esky High. Of the seventeen students who en- tered the preliminary contest, eight--four of whom were exper- ienced-Awere selected to represent the sehool in the interscholastic bouts. Tile :1fl'irmative team was first composed oi' Edward Curran, Capt., Warren Edwards, Ruth Sandbom, and John Hughes, and the negative team consisted of Almon Arnold, Capt., Robert Gess- ner, Dorothy Garrity, and Robert Beggs. A change was made in the line-up, however, placing Robert Gessner on the affirmative and Ruth Sandhom on the negative. The question for debate was: Resolved, That the United States Should Grant the Philippine Islands Their Complete and Immediate Independence. The debaters showed great zeal and interest in their work and were well-prepared when the interetenm debate was held. When opportunity knocks, do more than whistle Negative Team The first interscholastic debate, held March 20, was enthusiastically attended. Our negative team, composed of Almon Arnold, Dorothy Gar- rity and Robert Beggs, won from I1'on Mountain on our home floor. Superior issues and delivery were presented by our team. On the same night, our affirmative team, consisting of Buck Curran, Warren Ed- wards, and Robert Gessner. lost at Menominee in a very closely con- tested debate. The time between March 20 and April 3 was spent in further preparation for the dual with the Soo. On the evening of April 3, our affirmative team, on which Jolm Hughes spoke in place of Robert Gessner, defeated the Soo here, while the negative team, with Ruth Sandbom in place of Dorothy Garrity, won from the Lock City representatives there. T00 much commendation cannot be given to Mr. Lemmer, through whose skillful coaching and sincere friendship Esky High has been vic- torious for four successive years. The action takes place at the home of Roscoe Crosby. a financier. On the night of the engagement of Helen 0'Neill and his son, Will Crosby, a poor lady, Rosalie LaGrange, arrives at the Crosby home to stage a seance suggested by Ed- ward Wales as a means of finding the murderer of his friend, Spencer Lee. Every- thing goes well until a scream is heard and Edward Wales falls to the floor dead. Careful examination by Tim Donahue, Inspector, is conducted and suspicion falls upon Helen O'Neill who is found to be the daughter of Rosalie LaGrange. By means of another spiritualistic seance Rosalie LaGrange plays on the superstitious fears of the murderer and makes him tPhilip Masonj confess. They saw a room beautifully decorated in blue and gold and transformed into a Dutch Garden with an abundance of tulips. Four great wind-mills, with revolving arms on which were fastened a myriad of different colored lights also met their eyes. A seven-piece orchestra, the Arcadians, furnished the music for the dan- cing which began at 8:30 and lasted until 11:30 o'clock. The Grand March was led by Herman Miethe, President of the Senior Class, and Miss Isabel Curran, followed by Harold Cass, chairman of the Ball committee and Miss Cecelia Pepin. The feature dance of the evening was the Senior Special. Dur- ing this number the main lights were extinguished, and the wind-mill lights turned on. The arms revolved and variety of color was cast on the dancers. The members of the School Board and Supt. W. E. Olds were honor guests of the party. Everyone agreed that it was one of the most enjoyable social events of the year. The winner of the eighth grade contest was William Peters, who last year won the seventh grade contest. The winner of sec- ond place was Francis Baldwin. Marguerite Eis of the Washing- ton school took first place in the seventh grade contest, and second place was awarded to Jane Glavin of the Franklin school. In each of the contests the winner of first place received a gold pencil and the Winner of second a silver pencil. A banner bearing the name of the winner and the year hangs in the eighth grade at the Franklin to show the winner each year. A similar banner for the seventh grade bearing the name of the winner of the seventh grade contest, the school, and the year, was transferred from the Barr school, last year's winner, to remain at the Wash- 'ixgton until the next contest. The school winning the banner thi most times in five years may keep it. The success of both preceding contests warrants this to be a worthwhile project, which will be repeated annually. In training the young orators to speak on the platform the Orange and Black Society is living up to its motto: All for Esky High. lf things don't come your way --- CONSULTATION LIST A slip of paper, grim as fate, It is the FPGSIIIIIGIYS jinx, It levels both the lo wand great And gives them all the shrinks. They act as if they hardly care What fate for them has stored. They know their names should 11ot be on, In this they will persist, But all too often they're upon The Consolation List. Louise Harder R. T. Clinton Hunt R. E. Esther Foote Q. B. William Call L. H. B. Joseph Palm R. H. B. Elizabeth Wade F. B. Alice Auger After watching all the High School football material in action, and after much pondering. I, Nick Stockemer, All-American High School Janitor from 1901 to 1925, do hereby announce my Second All-American High School Team. I firmly believe that I have selected the best high school team that can be picked from any school in the United States and Gladstone. I am a modern man and have placed five girls on my team. The team has two good ends, players who could warm the bench for any coach. Mercedes is the goddess of speed and if Mercedes Fahay lives up to her name, she should be a wonderful asset as a receiver of passes, and also the first person to 'break up the opponent's plays. Esther Foote is the other end and she will be of great aid in stamping the opponents into submission. Our tackles are fast and it would be very difficult to box them. In Forrest Post we have one of the hardest men in High School. He is placed at one of the tackle positions and would help a great deal in bracing up the middle of the line. Clinton Hunt is the other. If Clint couldn't find the man with the ball he cculd always Hunt. The guards are hard workers and help much in bolstering up the line. These places are filled by Josephine Work and Louise Harder. N0 matter how hard our opponents are, Louise would always be Harder. The center is a leader and a gentleman. He supplies the dainty qualities to thc team. Theodore Apostle is in this position. We should make him captain because all of the twelve apostles werevgocd leaders. The quarter possesses the uncanny ability of calling the right plays, and with the help of the rest of the backfield he should have little trouble in submerging his opponents. William Call is placed at quarterback, after receiving a hard run from Ethel Boomer. William can call signals so that the whole team can hear him. At halfback we have placed Joseph Palm and Elizabeth Wade. Palm is,the master of stiff arming and Betty could Wade off tackle for many gains. Alice Auger is our fullback and she notionly provides the team witl1 a line-plunger but can bore through the other team when a few yards are needed. I, Nick Stockemer, janitor of the Escanaba High School, am responsible for all criticism of this team. Please send it in before my red coat wears out or Mr. Lee paints his car again. Coin, bullion, jewels and other valuables were carried to the bank and deposited in strong boxes. Checks were unknown. The only way to draw against an account was to go to the bank and carry the deposit away. From this primitive bank of the Middle Ages has gradually evolved the modern bank, now a factor in everyday life the world over. De- positing money and drawing checks has become such a commonplace matter that few people stop to think of the elaborate system that makes this convenience possible. An account with this institution puts at your disposal all the modern and ellicient conve- niences of banking. We are at your service for the safe handling of your money and for reliable advice in all financial matters.
