Basics Students must pass required courses Students must pass a number of required courses to pass each grade. These subjects are English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and Phys- ical Education. English is required for all grade levels. There are twenty two teach- ers in the ENGLISH DEPART- MENT. This year the ENGLISH DE- PARTMENT also includes the dra- ma department. Our goal is to assist students to sharpen their lan- guage skills, to prepare them for col- lege or the workplace, stated Mrs. Barbara Crooke, department chair- man. THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT headed by Mrs. Barbara McAtee, was involved in many outside activi- ties. These included Marine Science field trips, Science Seminars held at Pensacola Junior College, and the school science fair. The overall goal of the SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT is To help students learn to make rational decisions by teaching them about their past and about their present day relationship as it effects them personally and as it effects their re- lationships with each other,', stated Ms. Sarah Cobb, THE SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT offers a wide range of classes for all students form Law Studies to AP Modern Eu- ropean History. Ar ts Students are active in practical arts Many students' extracurricular activities were completely dominat- ed by a practical art. These include: FOREIGN LANGUAGE, BAND, CHORUS, SPEECH, JOURNAL- ISM, and PHOTOGRAPHY. The FOREIGN LANGUAGE DE- PARTMENT'S goal is to help stu- dents fulfill the two year college en- trance requirementf' said Mrs. Jeanne Kauike, department head. The department has added three teachers to the faculty this year be- cause of its increase in size. The BAND consists of 175 stu- dents all dedicated to achieving the same goal, superiority in every per- formance. Their goals were reached when the band scored superior rat- ings at every contest this year. CHORUS is made up of a female chorus, Chorus I, Chorus II, and Ad- vanced Chorus. The chorus is striv- ing to make choral music a vital part of our school, stated Dr. Larry Reed, choral director. Escambia's SPEECH class com- peted in the Escambia County tour- nament as well as the Catholic For- ensics League. With an average of fifteen entries per tournament, Es- cambia had eight students eligible for regional competition where they will compete to go to nationals, in New York. The J OURNALISM class worked all year to prepare themselves for future positions on the yearbook or newspaper staffs. Students in PHOTOGRAPHY I were able to study different areas of photography.
