Pablo Escobar Gaviria, one of the richest men in the world, was indicted this month, along with four Medellin tycoons, for the control of up to 80910 of the world's cocaine trade Patrick Duffy returned to Boulder, Montana to mourn his parents Terrence, 66, and Marie, 63, who were shot dead in what appeared to have been a robbery attempt at Duffy 's bar. Two janitors from nearby Helena were charged with homicides. Both were 19 . . . Terry Rouse is suing Geraldo Rivera for an on T.V., life, false ar- rest. Time reports that cocaine had been found in the apartment in which Rouse had been arrested, but was later let go due to lack of evi- dence in linking Rouse to the co- caine found in the apartment Desi Arnez died of lung cancer, he was only 69 years old. He was best noted for his role in I Love Lucy. . . Al Smith was 84 years old. He was a cartoonist and the drawer of Mutt and Jeff which was the longest con- tinual comic strip in the U.S. It ran from 1907-81 . . . December was the month to be all dressed up with someplace to go. The Christmas dance, sponsored by FACXSPC, and the Noel Dance took place. The Gator basketball players had somewhere to go, also. They trav- eled down south for the Thorough- bred Breeder's Cup. They won the first game, but lost the next two. 'Alt was fun, and a good experience. I would like to go next year, com- mented John Thomas, varsity team member. Students got their Christmas pre- sents early, when the class rings came in. SGA gave Christmas presents to the needy people in Pensacola. They sponsored a Food and Money drive. It didn ,t seem like we were going to have much to give, but the last couple of days it started rolling in, remarked Mrs. Vicki Schuler, SGA sponsor. The county Junior Miss Contest continued this month. Angels Hink- ley took fourth runner up. Michelle Ripa was the third runner up in Es- camia County. 5' u '34

- Student Life Cold Weather Can 't Stop Gators January was a pig-kissing, foot- stompinf blood-giving month. Not even the extremly cold weather kept the Gators from having a good time. Escambia held its first ever Kiss the Pig Contest. Students donated money to the teacher of his choice. The teacher with the most money kissed the pig. Encore sponsored the contest, and who better than to win, than Mr. John Leopard, Encore sponsor? It was certainly a memo- rable experience, commented Mr. Leopard. On January 27, there was a blood drive, sponsored by Key Club. Many students donated. Escambia had a Sadie Hawkins dance. There were haystacks and people dressed in overalls, but Vel- vet Melon Was hardly a 'country band. The dance was put on by SGA. My date the Scarecrow, was a great dancer, remarked Mrs. Vicki Schuldr, SGA sponsor. Some students felt like scare- crows after semester exams took place. However, the semester break make up for all of their hard work. - - f January World News in Brief Time dedicates 14 pages to The woman ofthe year - President Cory Aquino. . .This month Voyager took a global trip in 9 days with out refu- eling or stopping. The second Worst hotel fire in U.S. histo- ry occurred in San Juan at the Du- pont Plaza. The death toll rose to 95 and 106 were injured. The inferno was expected to be an arson . . . Time magazine devoted 8 pages to the saftey of air travel. In 1986 the number of wear midair: accidents rose to 812 this year . . . In 1983 the America lost the Americanis cup to the Australians.
