Wanda Radford, Real Life As I receive the diploma, I think back in time, To the days of childhood, I'd left behind. The smell of crayons in my Kin- dergarten room, Drawing Halloween pumpkins and a witch on a broom. A homework assignment to write the ABC's Falling on the pavement and skin- ning my knees. Talking at recess and a fast game of chase Looking into my first grade teach- er 's strained, tired face. The small things I remember, the big ones hardly at all, It's like a wide angle lens, in a straight, narrow hall. While I fast forward the incidents from all my years, I fight real hard to choke back tears. I tell the little ones hold fast of today Because before you know it, it will all slip away. Poet Laureate Wanda Radford was selected as Poet Laureate for the Class of '87 by several of the senior English teachers. Out of twenty-five en- tries submitted, Wanda came out on top. Denise Cebula, Angela Hinkley, and Deborah Turman were runners-up. Besides trying her hand at po- etry, Wanda is in SADD, ICC, Scholars, Bowl, Vice President of Beta, Historian of Latin Club, and co-editor of the yearbook. Wanda has never taken poetry writing seriously and feels, If it fpoetryj doesn't rhyme, it isn't poetry! When asked what in- spired her to write her poems, Wanda said, All the things that have happened to me over my years in school and the fact that soon it will all come to an end. Senior Prayer Now I lay me down to sleep My homework undone, left in a heap. If I, a SENIOR, should die before I wake, Here are a few requests that I must make: Put my Anatomy book in my hand, Tell Mrs. McAtee I don 't understand Place the English at my feet, Tell Mrs. Gross it had me beat. Throw the A.R Biology all over the floor, Tell Mrs. Tampary I could take no more. Lay all the Latin under my head, Tell Ms. Braun that's Why I'm dead. And take that report card, all tat- tered and torn, It was enough to make me wish I,d never been born. for Class of '87 Memory What happened to our yesterday of so long ago? What happened to our dreams, that no longer show? Struggling to survive as real life sets in, There is no way out, nor any way to win. Living on our own outside the shel ter of the school, All must sink or swim in life's giant pool. But I know the bigger part of the eighty-seven class, Will meet these challenges and somehow pass?!
