The Gators made history this year. They were ranked No. 1 in the state and at the same time were ranked No. 1 in the nation. Reaching the No. 1 position in the U.S.A. out of 14,900 high school teams, commented Coach Dwight Thomas. That was the big thing to accomplish this year. Besides the national ranking, the Gators were featured by the sports channel ESPN. The channel inter- viewed Joey Frederick, linebacker, and Emmitt Smith, running back on the football team and its anti-drug program. ESPN aired the interviews nation-wide in the fall of '86. The team finished the year with a 10-1 record. The only loss was with Pensacola High, 17-10. The loss at PHS cost the Gators the district ti- tle and a chance at a third consecu- tive state championship. I have enjoyed playing football here at Escambia for the past four years, stated Smith. There are no key players and we all played to- gether as a team. 1: 'ww ' rlfffllgf -.,, ,., 1 Li' W ' ,M V , raw History is Made With Top National Ranking The Gators, however, did go on to compete in the First Annual Florida Classic held at the University ofV Florida in Gainesville. The team de- feated Cardinal Newman. Emmitt Smith was presented the Most Valu- able Player award at the end of the game. Though the Gators did not clench a third state title, the team 's other accomplishments proved 1986 to be the Year of the Gator. This year has been both exciting and disappointing, stated Mark White, offensive lineman, I wish it could have been better, but all-and- all, it was great.
