Due to the loss to Patterson in the last game by 1 point, the Varsity missed going to the playoffs. Coach Loureiro also stated that next year will be very promising with many returning Juniors and the addition of the upcoming Frosh-Soph players who were this year's league champs. The Cougar league record was 1 win to 3 losses by an overall total of 9 points. The overall record was 3 wins to 6 losses, against the opposition of some of the top rated teams in the area such as North Tahoe and Dixon. The Varsity gridders ended the season in a third place tie in the league with Riverbank. 5. Greg Largent increases his coordination on the obstacle course during practice. 6. Dennis Bennett received the award of Most Inspirational Player. The Frosh-Soph had three Freshman starters, including Todd Casey as outside linebacker, Tony Chiappe as defensive tackle and Ray Stice as nose guard. The team proved to be the highest scoring in the California Interscholastic Federation section in nine games with a total of 213 points. The tough defense came in second in the CIF section. Cubs Spark at End of Year Shutouts over Patterson and Hughson and over Riverbank at 28-0 were the highlights of a season which produced a 3-4 overall Freshman record. The running of Joe Correia and Chris Swanson, along with John Edwards' quarterbacking, aided the team in these shutouts. Assistant Coach Rusty Fachner stated, Offensively, we struggled throughout the year to get points on the scoreboard, but really began to jell at the end of the season ' Defensively, the Freshmen were very strong, giving up just over seven points per game. Supporting a strong line and defensive backfield, the linebacking corps of Ross Bava, Greg Largent, and Chris Swanson held most teams in check throughout the year. The year's Most Valuable Player was Ross Bava. Dan Hawkins was chosen Most Inspirational while Joe Correia was elected Most Valuable Back. There were several close games such as the one point victory over Central Catholic in double overtime. Other tough opponents were Riverbank and Patterson who were defeated by a slim margin. The Varsity also did well in the Ceres Tournament by taking second. The team's only Senior guards Danny Keyser and Brian Sharp led the team with outstanding seasons. Coach Steve French noted that Junior Bill Burke was the most consistent player on the team and earned All-Tournament recognition at Riverbank, while Danny Keyser and Sophomore forward Tony Vrh were selected for the Ceres All-Tournament Team. Tony Vrh led the Cougars in scoring, such as the 23 points during the Patterson game, while Bill Burke led in rebounding, Danny Keyser, in assists, and Brian Sharp, in steals. 24 VARSITY BASKETBALL fZ I;) . ;■ 4. The outstanding player and highest scorer was center Randy Rose, who scored an average of 9.8 points per game. Coach Mike Backovich was also impressed with forward Rob Rigg and guard Frank Torres, who played consistently throughout the season. The team's lack of experience led to difficulties when faced with tough opposition from the Central Catholic and Patterson teams. Coach Backovich, however, was pleased with the team's attempts and believed they could do well next year as a Varsity. This team hustled more, tried harder, and had more determination to improve than any other team I have ever coached. 4. Frank Torres keeps his eye on the ball. 5. Mark George shoots for two. JV BASKETBALL 27 Cubs Show Unexpected Victories 1980's Freshman Basketball Team turned out to have had a great many more victories than expected. According to Coach Rusty Fachner, the team was a surprise to everyone. The coach stated, I didn't really expect this year's team to be a winning team. Every player was a winner; they all really hustled on the courts. John Edwards was the team's leading scorer and David Foster the leading rebounder. The steadiest players were Ray Stice and Dan Hawkins, while Tim Beck and Richard Sage showed the greatest improvement. i 1. The council used several methods to attain this goal, such as sponsoring a school newspaper, the Eski News, and appointing representatives to gather information within the community from community organizations, PTA, ESCALON TIMES, and the Recreation Commission. Linda Betcher, Marlene Rader, and Bob Galloway worked to make student opinions on several issues known. The council also subscribed to the ESCALON TIMES so that the activities at Escalon High could be posted in the halls. Student Council's other activities were a Trans-Valley League conference held in March to exchange ideas with other schools. The council supported repainting and new letters for the marquis above the pool, and a litter drive. 5. Linda Rampoldi reads the morning bulletin. 6. Student Council. FHA members competed in several Recognition Events including Chapter Exhibits, Chapter Manual, Salad Preparation, and Junior and Senior Job Application, in which they won several awards. The financing for these events came from Discount Booklet sales, which amounted to over $1300, in profits, Halloween cookie sales, the Christmas dance, one of the biggest events of the year, and the Valentine flower sale. In June, the FHA also awarded scholarships to deserving Senior members. FFA Is Action Packed A snow trip, the annual slave sale, and a donkey basketball game were a few of the activities sponsored by Eski's FFA. Members also participated in speech contests, the San Joaquin County Fair, the State Fair, and the Cow Palace, producing outstanding exhibits in horticulture, mechanics, dairy, sheep, tractor driving, and showmanship. They also took part in the Best-Informed Greenhand contest, Greenhand and Chapter Farmer Initiations, the Sectional Anything Goes, and the chapter skating party. FFA also sponsored competitive judging teams in vine pruning, livestock, horses, dairy products, mechanics, and parliamentary procedure. These teams participated at Delta College, MJC, Chico State, Fresno State, Reedly JC, and at the State Finals at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Officers representing Escalon's FFA were: President David Degerman, Vice-President Thom Brumley, Secretary Lori Rietveld, Treasurer Pella Biasca, Reporter Ken Tompson, Sentinel Tony Borba, Historian Bobbi Ragsdale, and Points Award Chairman Susan Peterson. 1. New to Eski in 1979, Mr. Yerzy gave a new sound to the band. The band faced its first big performance of the year in spring with a musical on March 27 and 28, in which the choir also participated. The Eski Jazz Band had its talent tested at the Pleasanton Festival and at the Columbia Festival. The game was followed by a fun-filled FFA assembly, which featured such events as a baby bottle drinking contest won by the Sophomores, a pie eating contest, and a balloon shaving contest won by the Juniors. March brought the Donkey Basketball game. The Science Club lost this messy but entertaining match to VICA 12 to 0. In turn, VICA lost to FHA 5 to 4, and FHA beat FFA 8 to 2. May's arena registration was better organized for the students due to the early pre-registration in March. March closed with the Spring musical, A Tribute to American Composers. It consisted of songs and dances to such numbers as A Chorus Line ' Oklahoma, and Paint Your Wagon. The spring play, Rest Assured, was Eski's last theatrical performance, held in May. 5.
