THEME 5 THEME 7 3IAI3H1 8 Seniors discover that by leaving high school they will be on their own and will enter into a new, more demanding, way of life. On this horizon, they can see the end of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood. THEME 9 Regardless of age, one is always faced with challenges that can’t be escaped, but must be accepted. All through our lives, new horizons offer an unstoppable adventure into the future. 10 THEME Activities play an important role in the life of a student. In a new approch to the litter problem, the Student Council went to several different classes giving speeches about cleaning up the campus. The Student Council took steps to clean up the Senior Court and bought new scoreboards controls to use at athletic events. The Council also ruled that Seniors could have their traditional candy cane sales and bought two Christmas trees, which they cut themselves with the help of Mr. McKay. 18 STUDENT COUNCIL 1 Executive Committee Vice-President Laurence Mendoza. In addition to performing at all home game halftimes, the band marched in a Modesto Junior College halftimes, and in the U.O.P. homecoming halftime. The band kicked off the year by marching in the homecoming parade. The band's participation in the Surf City Band Review in Santa Cruz was especially exciting because it was the band's first time to march in this parade. The band also marched in the U.O.P. homecoming Mr. Loeffier stated, I am particularly proud of the band this fall. Crowd response at the halftime shows was especially encouraging to the band and myself. It was said that our show at M.J.C. was the best they'd seen in seven years. 24 MARCHING BAND 1. As the year progressed, the ensemble produced what was considered by Band Director Rod Loeffler to be a very good sound. This 1979 ensemble was the largest in recent years. The trombone section was the youngest, but turned out to be quite good, and was also the largest at Eski for many years. In fact, when asked to name one of the best things about the Jazz Ensemble, Mr. Loeffler said, SIX TROMBONES! l. The ensemble played tunes such as Turkey Toes, Along Again, and Everything's Cool. These three were performed at the CMEA Festival at Hayward State, and at Dr. Pritchard's retirement reception in January. 1. Band Director: Rod Loeffler. 2. Nadine Nunes practices the tenor sax 3. FHA: Not Just a Class For the first time ever, Future Homemakers was a class instead of just a club, enabling the members to work together on their projects. In one major club competition, the Competitive Recognition Events, the students were able to compete in various categories such as job application, child care, chapter exhibit, salad preparation, and community To finance club activities, members sold victory cakes and had a bake sale during Homecoming. They also sold discount books along with the traditional sponsoring of the Christmas dance and Carnation sale on Valentine's Day. In the Swine Competition, Robert Cabral had the Champion Yorkshire Boar and Lynne Reichmuth took second in Advanced Swine Showmanship. In the Sheep Competition, the Escalon Chapter was headed by the Ragsdale Sisters, Sandy and Bobbi; Bobbi winning with a Champion Hampshire Ewe, while Sandy took a second in Advanced Sheep Showmanship. In the Beef Competition, Thom Brumley really stood out with his Reserve Champion Polled Hereford Heifer and his Champion Polled Hereford Bull. Richard Stuyt also took a first in the Heavy Weight Market Steer Division. Another winner was David Degerman in Agricultural Mechanics with the best Quick Coupling Equipment Exhibit. The year's activities included the Parent-Member Banquet, the Slave Sale and Chicken Bar-B-Q, National FFA Week, and the National Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri, to which Escalon sent two delegates. From 150 other squads at the camp, Eski's Varsity was selected to cheer at the San Francisco 49er game against the Atlanta Falcons in October. For moneymakers, the squad held a carwash and a rummage sale, and had a dime toss booth at the Park Fete in July. The money made helped to finance a greater amount of posters in the halls, breakfasts for players, and the cost of new uniforms. Something Special, the theme of Spirit Camp, was first on the rally agenda. Other rally themes were Boogie, Imitation, Hot Blooded, 50's, the traditional Boy Cheerleader Rally and a mini rally for Homecoming entitled Spirit. CHEERLEADERS 43 1978: Campaign for Rebuilding Escalon High School's football program was rearranged for the '78-'79 season leaving Escalon with only four league opponents. This number of teams did not affect the level of play. Head Football Coach Bob Loureiro noted that he considered this to be a rebuilding year with Riverbank and Bret Harte as the toughest opposing teams. The coach also commented that the team had good spirit and a lot of enthusiasm. Team captains for the Varsity were Mark Franceschetti, E. J. Nunes, and Lawrence Mendoza. Leading the offensive team were signal caller Brian Greer, anchored in the backfield by last year's 1,000 yard rusher Ed Nunes. The offensive line was led by Seniors Tim Klessens at center, Jeff Kyle at guard, Neil Hodgson at tackle, and Henry Bartelink at tight end. 44 VARSITY FOOTBALL 2 1. The defensive team, led by safety Mark Franceschetti and line backers Lawrence Mendoza and Eric LaBass, lacked size with no one over 200 Lbs., but made up for this with good speed and extreme quickness. Clarence Borba and Tim Santos were at first surprising in their ability to hold down spots on defense. Injuries also played an important role in the offensive backfield. Ed Nunes was hampered early in the season by an ankle injury, and Henry Plott, an outstanding Junior running back with excellent speed, was injured during preseason with a broken ankle and missed the rest of the season. 46 VARSITY FOOTBALL 1. A good part of the scoring on offense was credited to the one-two punch of Quarterback Randy Rose and Split End Tony Vhr. This combination could almost score at will from any spot on the field. Other offensive standouts were Shane Strasser, Mark George, and Ben Rivera. The offensive line was led by Lance Morrow, Tye Prater, Chris Johns, and Frank Garcia. The Freshmen experimented this year with two alternating first string defenses. Both were equally impressive on the field. The Frosh-Soph was led by returning Quarterback Nick Hodgson on offense and Brian Snider on defense. The strong point of the Frosh-Soph game was the passing of Nick Hodgson to his excellent receivers, Chris Rivera and Greg Largent. Running Backs Kevin Harris and Brent Holtz were also scoring threats on offense. The defense, nick- named Grape Crush, was led by Chris Rivera, Kevin Harris, Barry LaBass, Doug Reid. The defense was a strong as ever this year because of its leaders. 1 Freshman Football Team. Gentry, at 6'2 , was one of the best one-on-one players in the area, enabling him to drive inside where he got the majority of his points. 5'4 guard Mark Franceschetti got most of his points from outside, long range jumpers and also an occasional acrobatic flying drive to the basket. At the other Forward position was scoring machine Tim Dugo, who also made points with long range perimeter jumpers. Dugo was considered by Coach Steve French to be Escalon's best pure shooter. The all- around ability of Gentry and Franceschetti along with the instant offense of Dugo carried the bulk of the scoring for the Cougars. Rounding out the starting five was one of the tallest centers in the league, 6'4 Jeff Wright, who intimidated his opponents with his height advantage and shot-blocking ability. At the other guard position was the speed of Louie Torres. Escalon also had a dependable sixth man in Junior guard Danny Keyser. The surprise of the team was the play of Brian Greer who blossomed into a fine forward-center with outstanding offensive rebounding play. The defensive specialist on the team was Richard Myers' guarding of the opponents' best shooters. Escalon's offensive oriented team could score with anyone in the league, according to Coach French. 2 4 52 VARSITY BASKETBALL 1. Mark Franceschetti attempts a shot against Patterson. 2. Shayne Strasser at point guard developed into an all around player while Center Tony Vrh led the team in scoring. Both Freshmen played consistently all season. Helping out offensively was the shooting of Greg Largent and John Crow, while Nick Hodgson stood out defensively. A surprise for the team this year was in the playing of Chris Rivera who showed his all-around ability as a good sixth man. Escalon showed its superior power in the prestigious Hughson tournament by taking second place. Head Coach Mike Backovich felt the strong part of the team was the patience on offense. Escalon's Frosh-Soph also boasted one of the strongest defenses in the league and was seen by many as a strong contender for the Frosh-Soph Championship. i 54 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL 1. Freshmen on the Go Mr. Rusty Fachner, coach of the Freshman Basketball Team, stated that the team was the finest group of Freshmen to play at Escalon High in a long time, because they understood the importance of playing as a team and picked up concepts easily. Three of the team's star players were Jeff Grabow, averaging 18 points and 10 rebounds a game, Randy Rose with a game average of 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Frank Torres, averaging 8 points a game. The team's toughest opponent was Summerville, who defeated them by 29 to 27. Coach Fachner felt that their worst game was against Patterson, even though they won. The defeat of Ripon Christian marked their best effort. 10 FRESHMAN BASKETBALL 57 Hoping for Title The Escalon Wrestling Team has done well with seven wins in one-on-one wrestling. Escalon's team came in first in the Oakdale and Fairfield tournaments and second in the Lincoln and Lloyd C. Engel tournaments, the last over a field of fifteen other teams. New coaches this year were Martin J. Moreno as head coach, and his brother, Marlin Moreno, as assistant coach. According to Martin Moreno, the team improved quite a bit and moved up from third in league standings last year to first this year. Martin Moreno said, We hope to take the league. I look forward to three wrestlers going to the state tournament, and at present, we are very close to the subsections ' VARSITY WRESTLING 59 5 6 Small but Courageous The Cougar Cubs consisted of only eight wrestlers, but for a small group they were great. Coach Martin Moreno expressed himself in this way, The whole team is just fantastic. Riverbank, Lincoln, and Denair seemed to be the Cubs' toughest competitors. The Cubs had a frustrating loss against Denair at 18-19, but Coach Moreno felt that the whole team had improved over last year. The coach also felt that he had a great bunch of kids wrestling for him and expressed the hope that next year would be even better. Oustanding players this year were Seniors Blair Hurlock- 15-2, Neil Hodgson-12-4, Gary Focha-19-3, Tim Santos-8- 2, Juniors John Smith-13-4, Neal Focha-14-2, Eric La Bass-16-3, Tom Blanco-13-4, Sophomores, Kevin Harris- 14-1, Kirt Smith-9-1, Calvin Allen-6-0, Rick Santos-11-4, and Freshmen Wes Smith-23-2, Darryl Pope-20-4, and Barry La Bass-13-2. 60 JUNIOR VARSITY WRESTLING 1. Team leaders this year were David Guintoli, Eddie Nunes, Jerry Dalman and Henry Plott. The Frosh-Soph, on the other hand, had an abundance of runners with 30 members competing, led by Brent Holtz, Calvin Allen, and Nick Bavaro. Girls' Track continued to grow and this year boasted eleven runners, including Kathy Gonzalez, Kim Burch, Lucy Wright, Becky Cook and Renee Longpre. 1. Varsity Track Team. Leading the way was the duo of Mark Franceschetti and Fred Finch. Captain Franceschetti returned for his third varsity season to anchor the infield at shortstop. Junior Fred Finch, the ace of the pitching staff, returned for a second varsity season. Both were considered to be top clutch hitters on the team as well. The pitching staff was bolstered by the return of Kevin Gentry, who transferred back to Eski from a Sacramento high school after one year. Gentry relied mostly on a curve ball and used a variety of other control pitches. 2 3 70 BASEBALL Top outfielders were Randy Reid, Fred Finch, and Sophomore Greg Largent. BASEBALL 71 Softball Swings Into Action With only one Senior and three Juniors, Escalon's Softball team was a young one. Despite this fact, Coach Pam Barlet believed the team to be capable of taking the TVL Championship. Janey Casey was on the mound again this year, pitching to Catcher Susan Peterson. Tammy Davis, Linda Rampoldi, and Yolanda Moreno guarded the fields, while Susan Hyden, Kathy Gonzales and Debbi Lopes held the bases. For the season, Eski's team was ranked second only to Livingston in the league, and Coach Barlet expected the game with them to be a challenge. 1. Pitcher Janey Casey is on the mound. 2. Tightening the Belt Escalon High School's Administrators had their hands full this year in more ways than one. All administrative personnel were busy in preparation for the renewal of accreditation. In March, the school was evaluated for all aspects of school quality from teachers and students to the school's appearance. Through this evaluation process, Escalon High School received continued permission to grant diplomas from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The Proposition 13 cutbacks were another problem handed to the administration. Vice- Principal Owen Nicholas stated that, It hasn't really hurt us now because the state surplus has made up for the loss. 78 ADMINISTRATION 1 Secretary Jean Beggs. 2 Principal Hugh McKay and Vice-Principal Owen Nicholas. 3. Planning the fund raising activities were President Renelle Leinfelder, Vice-President Lance Morrow, Secretary-Treasurer Sheila Packer, and Representative Crystal Pearce. Freshman boys tended to stick together at lunch and at other times. The Freshman girls, on the other hand, were forever following the Senior boys around. And woe betide the ones they caught! Various talents and a sense of humor were a great boon to the Freshmen and their teachers. 1. Lawrence Mendoza finds himself swamped by Martha Campa, Shawna Burch, and Debbie Lopes. He's not complaining, though! 2. Mr. Headrick is the target and Shane Strasser's got him with the help of reinforcements.
