As a result, the 1978 edition of the Varsity team was inexperienced and the season proved to be a fundamental learning situation. The team included four boys who came back for their second varsity year, Mark Franceschetti being the most experienced along with Seniors John Campa, Paul Porter, and Stanley Xavier. Players up from the Frosh-Soph team were Larry Agostini, Jeff Wright, and Sophomore Scott Loureiro. The Frosh-Soph team showed the best potential in the league, however, due to the loss of several players to the Varsity, the team was dominated by Freshmen, but regardless of inexperience, it had a bright season. 5. BASEBALL 41 Softball Rallies After Slow Start The girls' softball team had a slow start this season for several reasons. Batting was slow at the beginning with the promise of improvement as the season progressed. Pitcher Janie Casey did a good job without a relief pitcher to take over. Promising team members were Elaine Burke at second base, and Joan Lopes at short stop. Cathy Postma and Tammy Davis showed good batting averages. The toughest opponents were expected to be Livingston and Linden, with Patterson added to the league as a new team. 1. Janie Casey and Cathy Postma are ready to catch the ball. 2. Coach Arellano felt that he had a fairly good team with approximately 18 varsity and 18 junior varsity members with about 22 girls. Some of the outstanding athletes were Juniors David Giuntoli and Brian Greer, who excelled in pole vaulting. Senior Ron Wayman's specialty was also pole vaulting. Bryan Ney, also a senior, was best at the high jump. Eddie Nunes, a Junior, and Jerry Fuller, a Senior, both threw the discus and shot. Senior Dana Martin excelled at the long jump. Among the many girl tracksters were Renee Longpre, who did an excellent job of jumping the hurdles and Mila Amerine, a Freshman, who did a great job of running. I. The new law requires all Sophomores to take a proficiency test in English and Math. If they are not up to eighth grade level in both fields, they will be required to take it again in their Junior year. If the student still fails, he will be required to take special classes. A second new law, the Hart Bill, will also affect all students from the class of '81 on. In the future, all students who do not pass the proficiency exam must take special classes until they can demonstrate the required ability. If they cannot, they will not receive a diploma. Mr. Nicholas thought that this law was excellent because it means that all students will be able to write and calculate at a set grade level prior to graduation. We Remember Marlene Mostowski Marlene was a very special lady, a dear friend to all. Words cannot describe all of her wonderful qualities. Everyone who know Marlene loved her . . . she was that kind of a lady. -Jean Beggs I lost a friend I will never be able to replace and she showed me care, love, strength and courage. -Pat Coslet Marlene's philosphy was, If you can't say something good about someone, say nothing. She was a loyal, compassionate, happy person who loved her family, her job, the school and, especially, the students. We will all miss her. -John Hawkins 6 6. The Student Council also launched a campaign to get rid of litter on campus. At the beginning of the year, the Council began the revision of the school constitution. It was finished and voted on shortly after Christmas vacation and then went into effect. The highlight of the year for CSF was a guided tour of Stanford University. memory Preserving for us every precious thing That we have loved and treasured most. Deep in our hearts and minds. And it can bring again the winsome smiles Of those we see no more. -Annette May Jones For the sake of Good Times past and present, the El Escalon staff has sought to recapture the unique and precious events of our high school years, be they the first dance of the year, Homecoming, sports events, or participating in Chinese Fire Drills ' The 1977-1978 year was an important one for lower and upper classmen alike. Incoming Freshmen were beginning a new adventure, while the Class of '78 was embarking on a year of endings and new beginnings. For the sake of Good Times and the rough times too, the El Escalon staff salutes 1978 by saying to all who will listen, Let the Good Times Roll. The '78 Yearbook Staff 1.
