Coach Loureiro appraised his team as being less experienced and smaller in height and weight compared to the rest of the Trans- Valley League teams. The coach said that his team therefore was not able to play to its full ability. Although the Cougars fell to the tough Los Banos Tigers, they were able to put points on the board. East Union was also a feared opponent and their victory was a big setback for the Cougar spirit, which rallied to defeat the Hughson Huskies at our homecoming game. Coach Loureiro did state that next year's Cougars looked promising. 2 Diana Addington Donna Addington Bob Allen Linda Arauza Sherri Bartolomei Craig Beck Rob Behrens 18 VARSITY FOOTBALL FRESHMEN Ron RocNa(l) looks bewildered as Hughson tackles tailback Jerry Bartelink. John Casey also had hip trouble but was soon playing again. Cougar varsity standouts were guard and linebacker John Casey, guard and linebacker Chris Klessens, middle guard Jerry Fuller, fullback Matt Sutter, quarterback Bob Franceschetti, and tailback Jerry Bartelink. Franceschetti and Bartelink in particular were an excellent team at completing a pass. In spite of long hours of practice, the teammates were unable to defeat their tough TVL opponents such as Linden and Riverbank, although Hughson was defeated at our Homecoming game. Sometimes it takes more than one man (4) to get Cougar Kelly Selby down. The 50's rally featuring Fonzie, Richard Cunningham, Laverne, and Shirley was a sensation, backed up by unique public address announcements and male cheerleaders. Students participated by dressing in the 50's style. The squad also created several new events for the students to get involved in such as the spirit flag, spirit plaque, and 50's week. In addition, they sold spirit ribbons for home games, and spirit socks. Mrs. Crain felt really thrilled to work with this outstanding squad. Varsity Yell Leaders (1): TOP ROW: Shirley Blanco. Team coach Mary Panero said that both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams were very strong. She also said that the Varsity team had much talent and could have gone far with a little more experience. Joan Lopes was the most outstanding player on the Varsity team and averaged 20 points per game. There were only three seniors on the team, so next year's Varsity should be outstanding. The Junior Varsity team was very strong and almost all will be moving up to form a powerhouse Varsity next year. They attended several tournaments which helped to improve their ability. The club members have held a car wash and wax and have sold items at a flea market. The money raised was spent on the VICA cars, which the members and Mr. Schedler worked on faithfully and planned to resell. Jerry Bartilink and Eric Hoek thought they were swinging by violating rules, so they went across the gym swinging potatoes between their legs in a daring race.
